Is it worth the extra $50 to get the Trackir 5 vs. the 4? What are the major differences one would notice between the two, mainly as far as in game goes.
-
I wish I could tell you about TIR5 but I've never used it. I have TIR4 and have no problems whatsoever with its performance or precision. TIR5 offers better resolution and tracking frame rates but to be honest I don't feel that it's necessary.
If I were to buy one today I'd probably save my money and get TIR4 but I can't say for sure because I've never used TIR5.
Hopefully we can find someone here that's used both that can compare the two.
-
Well that might be enough info to help me make a decision. Thanks :salute

If your going to keep it for years buy Trackir 5 with track clip pro :old:
Is it that much more expensive?
-
Either of these two with a pro clip is the way to go :aok I mean have you ever seen theses guys in their silly looking hats with those crazy reflecto thingy, yeesh :bolt: With the pro clip you will look cool even in the dark, as the IR diodes emit light & the chicks really dig 'em :rock
:lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol
I have had TrakIR4 for over 3 years now & love it. The latest software version for 5 also works with the 4 camera so it is like having the 5 but with less bells and whistles(I'm guessing). One major piece of advice, solicit and try many different profiles before you get a major headache and give it up. Right out of the box, it can be a real monster to get used to. The interface can be a little confusing to tweek at first but be patient.
Good luck :joystick:

It's $120 vs. $170... or a $50 difference. Basically the TIR5 proclip bundle is about 42% more than the TIR4 proclip bundle. That's pretty significant especially if you are on a budget.

thanks for the input and as far as the chicks go.... shhhhh!!!!! my wife might find out the real reason I wanna get this contraption.

$50 is a fairly large difference, especially for something my body may reject like a baboon heart, but I'm willing to take the chance on this. I have been playing this game for 4 years now and trackir has intrigued me from the get go. I gotta wait till after the holidays before i can pick one up, and as far as getting the pro clip.... that was a no brainer for me. :joystick: I cant wear a hat while i play that would just get in the way of my wig.... :rock
-
I wore a hat and clip at first, track clip pro was a big improvement.
I switch certain settings off my tracker 5 such as zoom and uncheck relative mode in game.
it's a pity you cannot borrow one for a couple of weeks .

So what makes you think it would make you sick? I know some people never get used to it but the vast majority have no problems.
I had a huge surprise the first time I was on a cruise ship! I've been thrown around in cars, roller coasters and airplanes and never get motion sickness. Track IR? No sweat! I was fine with mine after a couple of minutes and fluent in it within a couple of days. I never did get sick with it. Then last summer I took a one day party cruise to the Bahamas and about 45 minutes into the ride I just couldn't take it any more.
Yes we were cruising through a storm and the ship was being tossed around pretty good but in less than an hour I was at the main counter buying some Dramamine (which actually worked VERY WELL!) I was actually having a blast with the ship rocking back and forth and watching the water appear to come up over the ship and then drop back down back and forth over and over. I'm a freak that way though. When I fly through turbulence I just want to jump up and yell "YES!" when everyone else is holding on for deal life and praying for their safety!
My G/F on the other hand cant even close her eyes in a car without getting sick to her stomach.. yet the cruise didn't bother her one single bit. Go figure!
-
you must either wear a hat or a headset, no way around it unless you glue the reflectors to your wig :D. you gonna get sick the first couple of days, best thing is take time to get used to it then it will be the best part of your set up.
if the clip is too smal for your headset then use black electrical tape and keep a roll handy as every couple of weeks you will have to re do the tape.

I'm not really too concerned about getting physically ill from the device, its more or less the learning curve. with that being said, I find myself already leaning and trying to look around the cowling or just tilting my head from side to side. I know for a fact I'm gonna get the pro clip regardless of which version I decide on. I truly appreciate all of the input and will let you folks know what one I do get, along with my dislike or like of said product. I am a fairly patient person when it comes to equipment changes in this game so I'm sure ill be OK. :salute

I never got sick, or dizzy using trackir. It really only took a couple of days for me to get use to it, and after a month I couldn't imagine flying without it.
The thing that really took me the longest was getting the profile dialed in to where I like it. Once I did that I've never looked back.
I went so far as to not map the views to my stick or throttle and rely entirely on tir.
I have a trackir 4 with the pro clip. I've had it for several years without any problems.

The thing that I find to be funny (and my G/F laughs at me for) is when I'm watching TV and then something moves off of the screen and I move or turn my head to try to keep it in view. I guess I'm just so used to the TrackIR that I instinctively try to use it even when I'm not playing! HAH!

I've been using TrackIR 5 (with the pro clip thingy) for just 2 nights of AH now and seem to have gotten the hang of it pretty quickly and easily! The software is very good for tweaking to your liking, and for your particular setup, and it feels great to fly with.
The only thing I'm having a little trouble getting used to is keeping my 6 view in the right place when doing an aileron roll or barrel roll...after I've completed about 50% of the roll I begin to see the seat/headrest again instead of out the back. BUT I did notice when doing some duelling practice I didn't have that problem in a rolling scissors, maybe when you're concentrating on tracking an enemy plane you just do it naturally without over-thinking it. Or maybe, now that I think about it, during a rolling scissors you're more looking upwards than backwards for most of it........hmmmm
Would still appreciate input from anyone else who found the 6 views while rolling difficult ;D :salute
I'm still tweaking my profile a little bit here and there to get it exactly perfect for me, but I honestly found it very easy to get started with and would advise people NOT to be discouraged by the idea of it being hard to set up or get used to.
-
Hey Coombz, try this profile in the thread and see if you like the up & six view better. Warning: it is a little fast for most so just take some time to let it sink in that you just need to move your head less to see better views :aok

ps. Feel free to add your's once it is tweaked or modified :rock

The 6 views take a little bit of getting used to but it's more of a muscle memory kind of thing. In a couple weeks you won't even think twice about it.
Do yourself a favor and disable the "Roll" axis as all it does is make things very annoying. I didn't actually turn mine off completely but I did crank it WAY down. This way it rotates just a little tiny bit to add to the realism but that's all.

It's possible that perhaps you are needing to turn your head too much to get the in-game head to spin around and the TIR reciever is losing track of your emitters. Try increasing the scaling for the axis that turns your head. I have mine set so my nose points at the edge of my 24" widescreen monitor from arm's length away and my in-game head is looking straight back.
-
For the roll axis, I personally set it as 1:1, so the amount you tilt your head corresponds to the amount it moves on the screen. I find it very helpful to help me visualize what's going on when I naturally tilt my head sometimes to keep the horizon closer to level without thinking. It would drive me nuts if I had it set to magnify input though.

I've had both the 4 and now a 5 (track clips with both) and I find the 5 is significantly more precise and less prone to "floating" around the center as a result. It also does a better job with light filtering and IIRC it has a wider field of view.
The 4 is a good unit for sure, but I'd personaly spend the $$ on the 5. However, if I had to choose between spending the dough for a 5 or getting a track clip, get the track clip.
I also have a pretty good profile for anyone who wants to try it.

I have a quick and important question regarding trackir5, wondering if you could answer it Coombzy. Is there a switch/button in AH that enables you to instantly disable the whole trackir thing and revert back to your normal hat views on your HOTAS? I'd love the trackir for just general flying about and locking in on long range targets and zooming in on them/etc, but I'd rather be able to switch that off and stick with what I know and prefer to use (hat on stick) when in a knife fight?
Same, better, worse?

TrackIR has the ability to pause via a keystroke and I have that mapped to my stick for easy access. Also, if you use a hat to check a view it should override the trackIR as long as you have the hat switch engaged.
You might be surprised how often you use the trackir after a while. I love being able to look over and around the nose by just moving my head a bit. The ONLY thing I use the hat for now is the 6 view in some certain blue planes...
-
Cool, TY sir, that's just what I was looking for. I'm going to order the TIR5 with that pro clip so I don't get made even more fun of by the wife and her barstar friends when they come over for wearing what looks to be a tinfoil hat type deal for the non pro clip way of doing things.
-
Thanks for all the comments guys :aok much appreciated. Tigger's advice about lowering the sensitivity of the Roll axis helped a bit with keeping me in the right place with while going inverted + checking 6, but mostly I just needed some more stick time with it.
The most helpful thing last night was flying about an hour and a half of duels with a squaddie, while we chatted constantly about life, the universe and everything :rofl I was concentrating so much on trying to beat him, and on what we were talking about, that my hind-brain or subconscious or whatever completely took over when it came to the views.
Gman, as clerick has said there is a button to pause the TrackIR whenever you want, and also one to re-centre the view after you've wobbled it around ;D I think you'll find though, that even in knife fights you will prefer to use the TrackIR and enjoy having the option to bind a bunch of other things to your hat switches
:salute
oh, and all your friends will be totally jealous of your awesome headgear with the Trackclip pro ;) honest

oh one other slightly interesting/weird thing - I tried notch's profile last night (thanks for that mate, it was a bit too slow for me though, probably because I'm playing on a gigantic TV), and also experimented with turning TrueView off on my own test profile as a few people have mentioned that that helps them
strangely the only difference I noticed with TrueView off is that my X axis (leaning head left and right) was reversed! I'm sure that's not what it is supposed to do :headscratch:

it should reverse them in your 6 view.

Clerick, is like to give your setup a shot. I have a collection building. :D
-
Trueview is used in those cases where you're looking behind you and need to move your head left or right so when you move your real head left your game head moves left. Looking backwards tends to make the software work backwards, hence the need for this setting. Some games that support TIR will usually have a setting like that, and you should enable it in one or the other, but not in both; although it depends on how it's implemented in the games.

I have it. It is interesting. I cannot set it to look behind me like using my 8 position HAT on my CH gear trio in Aces High.
It made me a bit nauseous, some guys get headaches. But remember, too, these issues tend to plague us older folks. I still get mixed up and have memory issues where I mapped stuff to my stick and throttle. Those second or two lapses compared to the younger guys quick reflexes means opportunity to die or missed opportunity getting my enemy.
I originally got it for the 64-bit Digital Combat Sim, Warthog and at 64-bit, as good as my system is, it is not fast enough for that simulator. No worries, going to build a faster rig for that simulator series, based on the GTX 580 video card and this time, in 3D, with a not overclocked 4.0 CPU. $$$$ feeds my addiction.
In Aces High it is golden. Get Track-IR with the 3 LED plastic head-set clip called TrackClipPro. That thing is delicate, careful not breaking it. Get it with all the bells and whistles. It has presets in the Advanced Settings for Aces High II.
I still need to practice with it a lot as I have used the multi-view number pad, then later the HAT stick setup since 2007.
Guys tell me that use Track-IR, it is invaluable to the game, especially cons that overshoot or try to evade.
I use my FighterStick's buttons 4, 5, 6, and 7 currently for re-centering and precision mode for Track-IR. That may change as my CH Throttle's 8 way HAT views are no longer needed if I stick with TrackIR.
I just bought it last summer and got the latest version.

I still have my views mapped to the 8-way on my throttle. They come in handy with GV's and manned guns, where TIR works but is hard to stay perfectly centered in the sights (especially the main gun on tanks). It's great for driving around in GV's, just not so much for shooting in them. Also, the hat views will override the TIR while being pressed...experiment a little with that.

if you experiment with the settings, or use one of the many profiles that the AHII commnity has to offer you can eliminate that floating around center.

I've got some dead space (well almost dead space) in the center of my profile to steady my head when looking straight ahead. I also sometimes use my "look forward" hat switch to override TIR if I really want to steady my head. Then there's always the TIR Pause key and the re-center key. Yep, I'm fully aware of and use all the settings for TIR. :aok

Thank you all for the replies and incite.....

I agree with you, I will still keep my Pro Throttle's 8-way HAT for views.
The "Pause" function in TrackIR is mapped to my Fighterstick's #4 button that can stop the TIR from working, overriding it, and enabling the HAT views to function and thus, also have my look over my tail instantly available.
The Fighterstick #5 button I use for the TIR "Center" function and the #7 button for the "Precision" function.
However you map it is up to you guys, the idea is just a suggestion if interested.
It is really great. Now I can see the guys from all over everywhere and still get killed! LOL!
Thanks.
