I'd like to add another category of 'rank' on the Aces High Bulletin Board. Automatically have spell check verify your message, or have the server check them at midnight just like MA scores, and give the poster a +1 if it passes and a -1 if it fails. Certain things would be exempt, such as gameIDs, websights, and I'm sure there are others.
category :bhead
Another exemption would be emoticons.

I would prefer a system of -1 any time some one complained about grammar or spelling.
I am absolutely not joking, complaining of someones grammar or spelling on a bbs is very rude, and akin to some one like me complain of your complete ineptitude of the ability to create something like AH ,your lack of understanding of basic calculus and differential equations, and your lack of ability to exsplane (not intentional miss spelling after 5 tries of a non spell checker match I gave up) in detail concepts like special relativity, and the concept of different realities across multiple realities and the similarity to the synchronization systems of AH to that of GPS.
I don't vent very often but grammar and spelling nazie's really pmo.

Utter nonsense.
A basic understanding and the ability to utilize the English language is all that is asked for.
It is in no way comparable to the understanding of calculus, differential equations or special relativity.
When extremely intelligent people show that they are too lazy to spell their natural language properly I get really annoyed.

I have to agree with this. When I see a post that looks like the guy tried to shove it through a meat grinder before putting here, it looks to me like he does not want to be taken seriously at all. Since written English is the primary tool for communication here, this is all I can think of:

Of course, drunken rants and those that use English as a second language are exempt from scrutiny.
Here's the thing, knowing the difference between their, they're and there is elementary school stuff. The same goes for lose and loose as well as dozens of other commonly misused words and phrases.
Elementary School
So when someone doesn't use the terms properly, it either means that they are ignorant of grade school skills, or they are so self absorbed that they feel their time is too valuable to waste on taking a moment to make sure proper grammar has been used.
I would also like to point out that there are medical conditions which cause some people difficulty. However, these are rare enough to be excluded from this conversation.
Anyway, I see no need to score someone based on their ability, or lack of, to utilize the language.
Just don't get pissy if I pull out the Grammar Nazi card on occasion. (It's quite rare after all.)

Commas are open for interpretation. I, can put, commas wherever I want to cause the reader to pause.
As for his choice to not use the Oxford comma, that is not an error, but simply, a choice.

It is easier for me to do calculus then spell a simple word like explane correctly. It is only your complete uneducated understanding that you believe it is easy to spell and calculus is difficult. I did semesters of collage calculus with out going to class and just do 15 hours of study to ace the exams. I could study how to spell explain for 20 hours and spell it incorrectly 2 days later with absolutely no way of finding the correct spelling.
You assume laziness, it isn't you pompis jerk.

It's spelled pompous. If you are going to be rude and hypocritical, the least you can do is spell the insults properly.
-
Melvin you truly show your ignorance of the depth of the problem that I can not even come close enough to spell a word to find it in the bloody word in a dictionary or spell checker. Many times I have to choose different words then I wish to communicate with simply because I can not find the correct spelling
You may note that this gets under my skin, and you would be correct. I had to put up with people who have your view , the people who believe everyone one has the same ability as they do. I do not begin to believe everyone should be able to write code correctly. But simply because you can do something correctly , you believe everyone else must do the same.
And hence your a pompiss (misspelling emphasis intend) jerk.

Wow melvin I gotta say, you're being kind of a dick, dude. I mean seriously, you're arguing with Hitech, the guy that gave us this entire game, over something as trivial as spelling and grammar on an internet forum, which is, again, one of the most informal places for the exchange of words in the history of the planet, one thats probably only matched by the beer keg, water cooler, and the campfire.
All I see when people post about spelling and grammar mistakes (often while making the very same mistakes themselves) are people trying to say "look at me! I has good gramer!"

I wasn't arguing anything until I was called a pompous jerk.
It's not so much even the spelling. What really gets me is the inability for people to distinguish between their, there and they're. Lose and loose is another one that makes me cringe. That's a grand total of five words that, if used properly, would end about 75% of all grammar Naziism.

Commas should not be used to denote a pause. If you want to express a pause it should be expressed as a -.
There are specific rules that go with comma usage.

I think you took it the wrong way. Some people do well at things like calculus and some people do well at grammar.
-
dude, the first three are really close. Infact, one of those mistakes can easily be made if your apostrophe key is isn't very sensitive, or just doesn't always work for whatever reason. My shift key doesn't always work, and so I sometimes the first words to my sentences, and my proper nouns aren't capitalized, simply because I don't notice when they keyboard screws up.
Or if your keyboard has a quirk where it likes to put repeat letters, or if you simple double tap the O key on accident, you end up with "loose" instead of "lose".
Like I said, this is just about the least formal place for conversation (mostly because it about an unimportant subject, and essentially anonymous), and as a result, many don't really care enough about minor mistakes to go back and proof read their posts.
And language changes. Think about how many words we have now that weren't around in 1899, simply because the things the words represent weren't around back then. Grammar also changes, as does spelling and punctuation, though to a lesser degree. I'm sure that, were we able to talk with them, some one from 1692 would think our grammar horrendous.

I know exactly what he is trying to say.
My position is that the two subjects are nowhere near comparable. A better analogy would be to say, "Some people are good at elementary grammar and some people are good at addition and subtraction of no more than two numbers."

Tell me about it. Again, I just posted to express my annoyance at the lackadaisical attitude toward our language. Apparently people like me are beneath you folks' chosen one.
-
The compulsion to point out others shortcomings is defined as arrogance. Defending such an arrogance approaches delusions of grandeur. Such a person will never be able to admit where the real problem lies.
The person using poor grammar, spelling, and/or punctuation is not the problem. The person who actually thinks it needs to be pointed out is the problem. Posts such as those make it difficult for anyone to maintain a discussion about any given topic.
If you find yourself having an overwhelming urge to refute this, then you may be one of those arrogant people.
-
There are only 5 posts in this entire thread that have no glaring errors.

Melvin, :huh,
In this world there are two types of ppl in this world, "letter dudes" and "number dudes". That is what Hitech is saying, at least that's what i got from it. You are obviousally a "letter dude", you can spell, write, and type like nobodies business. You probably never make mistakes when typing up posts or writing a letter. Now I, like Hitech, am a "number dude". I can look at complex math equations and solve most in my head, or easily recall numbers of the top of my head in order to quickly progress with a particular job.
And i do believe Einstein was a horrible with spelling and grammar
Sorry if i overstepped my boundaries a little Hitech and Skuzzy. I don't like it when ppl feel the need to try and insult someone for no real reason

So...
If someone is good at both grammar and calculus, are they allowed to be a grammar nazi?
I understand HiTech's point which is not wrong, but the two are not really comparable after a certain extent.
In his field, the knowledge of calculus and writing code is a specialty skill, just as certain skills would be for a mechanic, artist, etc.
The proper use of grammar is afforded to just about everyone these days, especially folks with a college education.
Calculus and computer science are not.
Pointing out the rudeness may be correct but comparing it to voluntary, higher education in mathematics and computer science is a bit of a stretch for me.
-

I agree; however, I do see HT's point. I also see Melvin's point. I actually agree with both minus some of the extremes on both sides. Is that possible? It must be cuz I do.
-

I see the point, not the comparison.
-
I see the point, not the comparison.
That is because the comparison was used as an extreme example only to make a point. Something some people see as very easy and simply basic skills, can be, and is for me, more difficult then things that many people see as advanced education. As an example when doing advanced proofs in math history ,the math was easier then spelling therefore or therefor correctly in the proof.

A few misspelled words rarely bother me, but when someone doesn't even make an effort to create a coherent sentence, then I'm annoyed. I'm not a great speller myself, and many times I've stumped the spell-check and had to go to Google for help. However, when I see a sentence that has to be deciphered to even understand the point being made, then I get annoyed.
-
I do try to use proper spelling and proper English as it makes one's position clearer and more articulate. That said, I am not about to get on somebody's case about misspelling words like HiTech does as there are reasons for that. Using text message shorthand, no punctuation or carriage returns is an entirely different matter.
-
That said, I am not about to get on somebody's case about misspelling words like HiTech does...
Well of course not, u would certainly lose Justice Leaguer status if u did. :D
-
Ahm naut eather
-
Using text message shorthand, no punctuation or carriage returns is an entirely different matter.
This is, in my opinion, the crux of the reason people are so eager and quick to jump on the grammar bandwagon.
If you're typing from a computer with a keyboard, there is no excuse to not try to form proper sentences and paragraphs. If you're typing from a mobile device, you should still at least make an effort to use proper words and structure. Spelling errors don't count.
-
Idk, to me spelling is just sets of rules and memorization that typically gets engrained into long term memory through continuous repetition from a young age all the way through high school. There might be 20-30 spelling rules, i.g. I before E except after C, and a plethora of special cases. You just have to learn them all and essentially memorize them through repetition. I can see how this could be difficult if one was home schooled or did not practice adequately through grade and high school.
-
To me solving geometry problems is just remembering 4 rules. These 4 rules just need to be committed to memory and then you can use them to write a 3d graphic pipe line or solve all the force calculations needed to wright flight simulators. You just have to learn and memorize them. I could see how this could be difficult for people who were lazy and didn't learn them adequately by not listening in class when they were taught.

I did not mean to infer laziness as the reason one did not learn to become an experten speller through their teenage years. Just that, if one did not learn the sets of rules through practice and repetition through school, then they would naturally struggle with it. Not to pick on you hitech, because my grammar is not perfect, and my vocabulary especially, is inadequate. But if I had the motivation to learn new vocabulary words, I could study on a nightly basis and learn new words, their meanings, and how to spell them correctly yes? I do not see how this is any different than spelling. You can easily learn to spell commonly misspelled words if you wanted to, as you are the resident genius here.
-
I do not see how this is any different than spelling. You can easily learn to spell commonly misspelled words if you wanted to, as you are the resident genius here.
This is the point. I can NOT, NEVER, EVER, NO MATTER HOW LONG OR HOW HARD I STUDY. I can never learn to spell the most common 5 letter words. It is literately a hit or miss depending on what day.
And THIS is what gets under my skin. It is because I DID study far longer and harder then anyone else I knew when it came to spelling, including summer school. And no matter what I did, the words would not stay. Many days there are 5 letter words I can not spell correctly.
It is not because it is difficult that gets under my skin. It is because some people believe since they can learn it so can everyone else. And if I would take the same view point, things that are trivial and simple for me (like coding, geometry ....), I would believe they are trivial and simple for other people.

So you're telling me if I told you that you would earn a million bucks if you could spell a list of ten trouble words with 2 weeks practice, you would not be able to do it? Or are you saying that you might be able to do it but would immediately forget how to spell them after the test? That is odd because clearly it is not a short term/long term memory issue, since you have stored your vast knowledge of skills to long term memory. How is the memorization of syntax related functions and parameters not the exact same thing as the memorization of syntax related letters and their arrangement?
-

Never meant or intended this to go the way it did.
How about brethalizer tests before you're allowed to post?
I've wasted way to many seconds of other's precious time.

Grizz,
There are things that sometimes cause that. My dad, for example, has pretty bad dyslexia which makes reading hard for him. He still reads, but compared to me it is a slow chore to get through a book. No amount of encouragement will make my dad's dyslexia go away.

There is a good chance I could not spell all ten on the test. And after a few weeks it is almost a positive I could not spell them correctly.
grizz many times I can still not remember that it is their or thier. And with out a spell checker or dictionary , there would be no way I would know for certain. When I wrote earlier that I could not spell explain, I really did try 5 times different version for the spell checker to come up with a spelling. I really did give up.
All I can tell you is it is a one way thing, I can read a word, and 1 second later not be able to spell it unless I just concentrated on how it was spelled.
And it isn't like I do not read much. Last year was close to a book every week.

So the guy can't spell, he still seems to have a good understanding of the language. So what if he juggles his I's and E's before he puts them down? I wouldn't, then posters would develop a dependency on teh spellchecker. This dependency would only lead to degradation of grammar/spelling in every other venue that didn't feature/offer a spell checker. It's a great tool to have valuable for use when you opt to do so, and then you also maybe get some helpful instruction/critiquing form the spellchecker that you take on with you.
Edit: And then again you get other benefits to no spellchecker. Like see above, my never-ending habit of striking the "E" key before the "H" 90% of the time I wrtie the word "the". It's not a BFD to me, and I notice regular-poster's regular typos, so I start getting compfortable with them because it's almost a subliminal form of poster authentification. Chances are, if I allegedly post some hell-raising ban-worthy thread on a forum one day, and it doesn't have that "teh" typo at least once, I am almost surely not the poster of it.

Utter nonsense. Was not a complete sentence and deserves a ding.
The rest was correct.
Nowhere did I call myself "extremely intelligent". I was actually referring to people like Hitech.
Your comprehension is as atrocious as your spelling.
Does your speltcheck not work?
Ignorant spaz, I hope HT sent you on a vacation, if he didn't he has more self control than at least myself.
My brother, like HT, is dyslexic and I've long understood and respected HiTech from this angle and don't hesitate highlighting his successes alongside my own brothers whenever mentioning the subject of overcoming the damned disability and being successful in the face of dealing with it on a professional level (or explaining its existence for the first time to complete sods and rejects like you).

+1 I wouldn't even call it a disability, just something people are born with. I have to check the odd couple of words but it has never stopped me doing anything.

needed to wright flight simulators...
Anybody else see this as ironic? Not saying anything against hitech, just thought it fit well with the surrounding words :D

You never need to think it bothers me for someone to points out my spelling. It is why I have the I "coad" as my avatar, I forgot who won the contest to give me an avatar, but it was a great idea. The only thing that bugs me is when someone tries to tell me it is simply because of a lack of effort that I or many other people do not spell well.

Some people are born to spell others are Born to Coad, spelling is the least of the two to worry about. If we can make the sentence out then its acceptable.
I can write papers for a journal, ask me to coad and I will send the coad on a 2 week vacation.

Most "you guys" don't. :aok It isn't really I do admit, in most every other way you guys are sharp as tacs. But, because of that and maybe some shame, I also strongly feel you guys tend to forget or dismiss it from yourselves more than you need to or should. I respect that, and for the most part it works perfectly (as I said, mentally and physically as sharp as tacs) but at the same time I start to get frustrated (with a big "F") when I start seeing you guys struggle or falter a little where others don't and all the "smart ones" (see: dolts) can do is throw their hands up or point a finger rather than suavely or generously lend a strong and supportive hand to you guys.
Honestly, I eagerly looked forward to corresponding and spellchecking my brothers college papers via email every other week or so for almost 5-years. Besides piggybacking most the material/subjects he covered, it kept us in solid connection.

Well put.
And if that's not enough effort for them, I'll eagerly show them some of the hard effort that I know you're putting into it... about both my size 13-wide's worth. :devil

I would also like to point out that there are medical conditions which cause some people difficulty. However, these are rare enough to be excluded from this conversation.
I guess my point went way over your heads.
In return I was called:
*pompis jerk
*pompiss jerk
*dick (twice)
*arrogant
*sod
*ignorant spaz
*reject
*And probably a few others I missed.
You sychophants sure are amusing when you get your panties in a bunch.
Oh, and Babble-on...

they called you a dick because you were being a dick, just like you are now. besides I like his use of "pompis jerk", since pompis is slang for "donut" in my second language language.
