had a lady brought me an s-10 4x4 last year. i had to fix some screw ups that a backyard mechanic did, in order to get the truck to pass inspection.
just a few weeks ago, the truck appears on my lot, no keys, no note. i called her, and a few hours later, her daughter and daughters boyfriend show up. the boyfriend comes at me with massive attitude, and tries to "ever since" me. you guys that work on cars know exactly what that means. he tried telling me that ever since i worked on the truck it was making a rattling noise, and that it had an oil leak. yet i touched nothing to do with the engine.
i stayed polite and calm, took the keys, and told them i'd call the mother, since the truck was registered to her, when i found something. so....know what i found? oil. everywhere. except in the engine. it was seized. i looked at the oil change decal, and found it to be to another local shop, and showing about 100 miles overdue. i know for fact that that shop didn't cause this problem though, as i know the owner, and the kind of people he hires.
i called the trucks owner, and asked her who did the last oil change. she asked why i wanted to know. i explained that the last oil change was done improperly, the filter fell off, and the oil spewed out. wanna guess who did the last oil change?
the daughters boyfriend.
so i get her estimates on a reman. engine, and a used engine. she says that they're both too high. so what does she do? she's having the truck towed to another backyard mechanic that says he can do the whole job for about 1/3 of what a used engine was gonna cost here.
so.......backyarder screws up the suspension bad enough it can't pass inspection.....then a backyarder screws up the engine.......now she's taking it to yet ANOTHER backyarder to install a used engine. :bhead :bhead :bhead

:rofl

lol take it easy on the backyarders, thats what I am :D. I had a certified mekenik "fix" my car, long story shot I fixed everything that he messed up myself ie loose bolts and what not. My truck developed a tranny line leak right at the tranny, looked at it and the fittings didnt look like just screw in like brake lines, so I take it to a GMC dealer they replace the lines. A few weeks later, it snows I had company so I parked my truck next to my garage on the lawn oh this(http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx199/homersipes/112.jpg)is the tuck. I get in it later to park it back in the drive way, NO 4WD!! WTF I said, so I get a friend to pull me out, pull it in the garage 4WD is totally unplugged, they screwed up my skidplate mounting bolts. funny thing is is that the tranny lines run nowhere near the 4wd plug on the front differential. So my "backyarder" self dont trust ANYONE anymore to fix my rigs been hosed my 2 "real"mechanics. But that is a funny story though
-
I DON'T have anything against backyarders....i used to be one for quite a long time. but........2 for 2 screw ups....that'd stop me from doing that.
-
For people like me who aren't really mechanically inclined a good honest mechanic like Cap is a godsend. I've got a guy down here that I trust. When I had the 2000 overhauled last year I talked to Cap about what he thought might need to be done and that's exactly what my guy said and he was within $100 of Caps estimate.
-
LOL. EPIC fail for the boyfriend.
-
yeah I have a couple friends that run a small garage and some of the stuff they talk about blows me away. A guy I used to work with was driving a company truck and the serpintine belt broke he said he didnt know it but it cooked the engine. Was like you didnt see the battery light come on?? or the fact that it was ovheating?? cant fix stupid I guess. Cap sorry if it came out rude wasnt my intentions lol and 1/3 of the engine costs?? sounds like some JB weld to me lmao. reman engines arent that expensive for the s10, I replaced a 2.8 I think it was around 1300 or so and a 3 year 100000 mile waranty. Me and a friend of mine did balljoints on a friend of my wifes explorer, after her bf tried. He had it all pulled apart wrong, then drops the wheelbearing in the dirt and never cleaned it before he realized that the project was over his head and put it back together.
-
(http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx199/homersipes/012.jpg)my first balljoint repair as you can see I had no air puch so I had to drill all the rivets out, tried to hammer them out but that didnt work

you didn't come off as being rude.
the s10 has a 4.3 in it....and i felt that the prices were very reasonable for either used or reman. reman i was using jasper, due to the warranties they give. used the yard i was getting it from was only willing to do 6 months, which i told her. i guess she likes the 0 warranty plan better.

well, if you also add in that she HAD to have heard the engine knocking, and HAD to have seen the "check gauges" light, and HAd to have heard the dinging with the light, and the gauge going to 0...........

The lady that use to cut my hair had her new jeep catch fire and burn. She was pissed off. I asked what happened a few months later. She said some factory investigators came down and found a rag stuck where it shouldn't be found. He husband changed the oil and left a rag next to the exhaust.....

LOL! Some people have nerves. Some dude a few years back had a small accident with his car. Front bumper broken. He wants to know how much to repair it. We advise him to come over and we can check it out and produce an estimate. Now he has another accident while driving to our shop. Guess who should pay for these damage in this "gentlemen's" mind.........
DA. SOB.
I work a in a dealership so we sometimes have to deal with alleged conception vice or missing feature. I had one guy call me everyday for a full month because his 2011 camry radio wouldn't accept more than 20 entries in the bluetooth, which is BTW perfectly noraml since it's how it was made in the first place. Geez, it work how it should. How exactly do you expect me to FIX something that work right?!?!
I could go on and on. Sometimes I'm afraid because it seems I'm responsible for others shortcoming and plain stupidness. I feel for ya Cap.

Nawww..
That came when it got repo'd. The decree said she had to make the payments and she didn't. The credit company called me and I told them where it was :devil

i've had stuff like that.
i also had(notice i said had?) 2 people that'd call me or stop in to pick my brain. i don't mind usually. they were both customers when i worked here for the previous owner, and i'd hope to get them to start coming back.
after a couple months of this poop, i'd ask them.....what did you ever do about the last couple problems you asked me about. they both said pretty much the same thing......oohh....i took it to "XX" shop for repair.
i told them have a nice day, and when they wanted something repaired, please don't hesitate to call me. they asked me "well what about this problem i just asked you about?". i told them to take it to the guy that's been fixing their stuff, and ask him.

Every time I change my oil and recently change the water pump. My final work is to make sure everything is screw on or fasten on tight, no loose wires or cords, no tools and rages and anything eals that does not look right. Thank god for my OCD, I check it twice.

I did the brakes on my '81 Datsun 510. Once.
That was enough. I'll stick to building computers, thank you.

I love to work on cars that are old enough not to have any computers, but newer cars... No way. Fortunately, there is a shop here in my area that has been in business for decades. The owner is slowly retiring and preparing his two sons to continue the business. They are great. Can fix anything, and without a bunch of BS.
You just have to ask everybody you know who the good mechanics are in your area. There are lots of crappy ones, but find the guy that everybody recommends and you're usually good to go.

Detective Cappy :)
in all honesty, it often times feels like that. we never get the whole story the first time. we need to play "20 questions" with nearly everyone that comes in with any sort of driveability problems.
-
havent met a good mechanic I trusted. not saying there arent any, but I have never met any. and it has cost me a lot since at the first sign of major trouble, i go buy another car/truck, in my case it's been the cheapest option.

So 'It's broke' doesn't exactly work for you?

it's hard to find one you can trust. i feel we're kind of like dentists. it's hard to find one you can really trust, and feel comfortable with....but when ya do, you stick with them.

now on that note, i did....about 13 years ago.....have a taurus 3.8 with a blown head gasket(go figure, right?). it was spitting antifreeze out the tail pipe.....it was going nearly 3 feet. only time i've ever seen that........

The worst part is when your normal go-to guy can't do it. I had a no-start with my Wrangler a few weeks ago. I couldn't nail it down, so I took it to my normal guy. He tracked it down to the PCM. Problem is, he couldn't install it because it had to be done by the dealer as they had to program it. We were both bummed out about that.
Thank God it was covered under the 8/80,000 warranty.

This is true.
I had one near here I really liked. Was a good mechanic that I liked and trusted. But he turned out to be a terrible businessman and couldnt get alone with the guy who owned the gas station where he rented the garage he worked out of. That combination turned toxic and he is no longer there now.
Not sure where he went.
The location was perfect for me though and I could walk home if I had to as it was only a mile or so away. There is a new guy there now. I'll have to check him out for my next oil change.
I dont even do oil changes anymore. Just not worth my time. There. I could/can bring my work truck in and for about $30 I drop it off. Walk a hundred yards away. get a slice of pizza. Take that another 50 yards to the local Stop N go convenience store pick up a pack of smokes and bust chops with the dot head owners. and they mine (trust me. we call each other far worse then that the moment I walk in) Have a few laughs. I walk back and pick up the truck. I end up not bleeding, cussing or aggravated. I dont have to bring the oil anywhere to get rid of it. and if I took too long he would even run a quick vacuum in the front provided it wasnt too much of a disaster area. Which, considering during the week I practically live in my truck is more often then not the case. Amazing how fast things accumulate.
I used to enjoy working on cars back in the day. Now I take one look at them. Realise I dont have a NASA type degree in engineering and say "screw dat"
I used to get a degree of satisfaction in doing it myself. Now I only get aggravated. Did the waterpump a few years ago. Used to be a fairly simple procedure. Now if you dont have a special tool. It is a regular full blown adventure just to separate the fan from the pump. Which used to be. take out 4 bolts and the fan came off. Why they changed that is beyond me because they really didnt need to.
Anyway. It started an effort in aggravation. Was an effort in aggravation and I was left nothing but aggravated when I was done. And when I looked at the time it took me. I could have saved money or at worst broke even by just bringing it to the shop. And I would have the added benifit of not being aggravated.
You see. I see my time as money Once something takes more then 3 hours to do Im looking at the cost of a full days work. As beyond that I charge for a full day. So. I could have went ot work and done what I know how to do best and made the money to pay someone else to do what they know how to do best.
Now I'll do front brakes and other minor things. But if Im going to bust knuckles or its going ot take more then a few hours. It goes to the mechanic
-
Who's the backyarder who sided that house? LOL
lol that was the neighbors house and I o longer live in that craphole apt anymore bought my own house. watched a lady while I was pumping gas one go into the store and buy 2qts of oil whent out and put it in her honda prelude. she goes back in and buys 2 more and puts them in, was thinking wow must be NO oil in that thing. So she goes back in and buys 2 more!! dumps them in, I was still pumping gas, as she came back out I had finished and walked over to her and asked her if she knew how to check the oil. she replies that she "still cant see the oil in the hole that you put the oil in" her husband came up and drained the oil lol and then explains to her how to check the oil. The dipstick is under the hood NOT in the drivers seat

I think the 100 miles over due caused everything :aok Quick question Cap, did you ever recommend to anyone that they change their oil after 3K miles or were you the one to blow the whistle?
-
depending on the driving conditions, and oil type i stick to 3k on up to 10k. 10k being synthetic with a lot of highway driving. 3k being the guy that drives his car 10-2- minutes at a time, never fully letting the engine warm up, thus doing a wonderful job or contaminating the oil.
my fleet customer does theirs at 5k. they do a pretty even mixture of city and highway driving. it works well, as they've got nothing with under 150k miles, and several with nearly 300k miles. every time i drain the oil, it looks nice and clean.
on the other hand, i've got one customer, that owns 2 cars, and they do theirs every 6 or 7 months. even then they don't put 2k miles on the car, but they want it done.
-
had an 89 s10 with the 2.5 bought it when I was 15 with 30000 on it did oil changes religiosly at 3000 at 3000 the oil still looked brand new. I ended up selling it to a guys son around 4 years ago had 190000 when I sold it to him. The tranny crapped out a few weeks agoat 275000 . I guess, he said that it locked up the rear wheels, probly due to lack of maintance as the rear seal on the trans leaked a little when I sold it to him I had the seal just never put it in

no but the first time i changed the oil in my car, there was no transmission oil and way too much engine oil along with slick 50 in my engine. the oil plug for engine and transmission were only about 7 or 8 inches away, anyway, i kept thinking "the engine oil plug should be a little more to the front", i guess I should've paid more attention to myself.

:lol Good no answer
i didn't think that the fact it was 100 miles overdue was the cause of the problem. i simply noted that, as i looked for the decal, to see if it had just been changed. when i saw that sticker, i called the owner, and that's when i found out that the daughters boyfriend had just done it.
i can tell ya......s-10's are tight under the hood. especially with the 4.3 liter. the quote she told me that the next backyarder had given her......he's gonna lose money on that big time. the engine's seized. it's gonna be impossible for him to get the torque converter bolts. due to that, he's probably going to lift the engine out with the converter attached to the flywheel. there's no room in the engine bay for this, even if he removes the radiator and a/c condenser, as the radiator support will still be in the way.
i'm gonna wait about a week, and call her to see how it's going.

My first truck was a 96 chevy single cab step side with the V8 350 engine. It got to where it didnt want to start, acted like a dead battery but the battery was only a month old. So my mother, in all her genius, made me take it to this shop out of town because the local mechanics are just dumb rednecks. He replaces the fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel injector, and other fuel related stuff that I cant recall at the moment. It ended up costing my mom ~$900. I went to pick it up, it starts fine in their lot, as soon as I get home, guess what, it wont start. I jump it off and drive down to the local redneck. He looked at it for literally 10 minutes, rolls out from underneath the truck looks at me and says "you need a new starter." Problem solved.
-
lol I hate when starters go bad seems to happen at all the WRONG times. Had an 85 s10 I put a reman engine into didnt replace the $30 starter, soke up late to work one day and went out to start it and click click. So I figured I could arc the solenoid and replace it that afternoon, so I did it and ZZIINGG bendix wouldnt engage the flywheel. So I had a 1/2 inch breaker bar I was arcing with I stepped back and was aiming for the front bumper I threw it and smash right through the grill and brand new less than 500 miles radiator. So a $30 fix fost me almost $200. I have since learned not to throw anything cuz my aim SUCKS

wanna hear a funnier one?
shop i used to work at....i was messing with a light control module issue on an olds aurura. so the other guy gets the 89 chevy pickup no-start. he pulls it in, and in about 5 minutes, says that the fuel pumps bad. i asked him if he checked the fuses and relays, 'cause he came to that conclusion too fast(for him). he told me to mind my own business.
new fuel pump goes in. still doesn't start. boss pulls me off the olds and puts me on it. took about 30 seconds to confirm the bad relay. :rofl
another chevy truck no brake lights. same guy. replaces the brake light switch, 'cause it's definitely bad. it wasn't. it was a blown fuse.

When I worked at the local mower/small engine shop, the was always at least one person (if not 2-3) who we had to charge a p/u and delivery fee for their equipment and then would complain about the bill.
"What do you mean, it's $55.00 ?!?!"
"Yes sir. $50 for the p/u and delivery and $5 for the gallon of gas."
Our standard first question when a customer would call with a no-start?
"Is there gas in the tank?" Second question? "Are you positive?"
:rofl

Oh dear lord don't talk to me about water pumps. I've helped my Father replace them on my '93 Ranger and my Sister's '01 Ranger. I hope the engineer who designed that procedure is forced to do that every day for the rest of his life.
My Sister's truck wasn't that bad, auto zone had the special part for her fan assembly, came off pretty easy except for the water pump and the foot long (only slightly exaggerated) bolts that attached it. But my Ranger... The water pump on that damn thing goes out again and the truck is going to the junkyard, as much as I love it.
What was worse, is after we spent about 5 hours getting the fan off the rest of the job took 10 minutes if that, and only about 5 minutes to put the fan back on. Then two months later the fan clutch on my Ranger goes out. :bhead :bhead :bhead :bhead :bhead Both of us swore to high heaven 'cause when we had it all apart we both said we should replace this 18 year old part... But decided against making another trip to the store.
We had a mechanic down the street who used to do great work for us, but then I suspect he left because his boss didn't have a moral compass. Finally found that he had opened his own store about 40 miles away. It's a long drive but the work is definately worth it.
After he left the old place we went there twice, once for a new set of tires that lasted 15,000 miles before one of them blew on me while driving, the second time they tried to tell me my power steering pump was leaking and wouldn't pass inspection. I looked at it, wiped away some oil, said thank you and never went back.
5 Year later that power steering pump hasn't had any issues at all.

the trick on those crazy long bolts, that often times break........don't take them off first. break the water pump around them. this releases the tension, and then about 95% of the time they'll come out ok.

I used to do a lot of my own repairs, numerous clutches, struts, exhaust, etc.
Use to change oil, remember on time changing it, drove it to store. While
Walking back to the car I noticed a huge puddle of oil under it. Checked the pan bolt
and all. Had it towed to local repair shop. Ended up the old rubber o ring
from the old filter stuck to the block. Alway check your filters when you pull
them.

yeah sometimes those gaskets can be a sob. they always put th filter in the most screwed up way as so you cant get a scraper in there. a while back a friend bought a new intake and carb for his jeep. It has an old chevy 350 in it, so we pulled the old and put the new on. Got it all back together and the rotor wouldnt line up to the 1 cylinder. Was like WTF. bout an hour later I walked in the house to get a drink, and it hit me square on, you dumbchit turn the oilpump. Went back out and in 10 mins I had it fired up. I guess moral of story dont forget important things like that lol
-
well, if you also add in that she HAD to have heard the engine knocking, and HAD to have seen the "check gauges" light, and HAd to have heard the dinging with the light, and the gauge going to 0...........
....and at least a couple liters of oil pissed all over her usual parking spot.

My first ex did that in a 1994 Accord in 1997 when we were freshly split. When she called B#%#ing about it I just laughed and hung up :)
5-months after my ex left me her Ford Taurus threw a rod on the freeway due to a lack of servicing/oil-change. (you know, the one that left me on my 25th bday and for another man who got stuck with her for 2.5 years :devil ) Too bad I'm the one who paid for most the car, but still.
Life, karma, fate, w/e.... it's all best enjoyed and washed down with a good beer at the end of the day. :D

After my first 6 years in the Army I got out and went to work for a shop that only did engine replacements, I did all the machine shop work. We had a company that we got our short blocks from and I did the cylinder heads and built the long blocks up for the mechanics, all they had to do was stab the distributor and put on the carb.
The things you see in a shop like that is amazing I could wright a book, we would get 2 to 4 cars a week that had blown engines after the jiffy lube forgot to put oil back in after the oil change.
Or the guy whose son wanted a 350 with flat top pistons with closed chamber 305 heads milled 30,000, when I told him that they would need forged pistons and alloy rods and what the price would be his son told him that his "friend" didn't have that stuff and it ran fine and was really fast.
So dad tells me to build it like his son wanted, so I did and the boss wrote on the invoice no warranty.
Three day later here comes the car pulled by a wrecker with pistons hanging out the block, the dad asks why the engine failed so I told and showed him that the pistons had failed and put the rods through the heads and slung them through the block because they couldn't handle the compression.
Well the son says he was just driving down the road when it happened so dad tells us to put another motor in just like it and I tell him the same thing will happen again but dad says do it anyway.
Three day later here comes the car pulled by a wrecker with pistons hanging out the block, you guessed it the son blew it up again and we went through the same conversation again.
Were making 1500.00 a pop on this guy so the boss has no problem doing it but I didn't like seeing my work come back in pieces, so I put a stock 350 with open chamber 305 heads back in it and we never saw the car again.
All over and extra 400.00.

Way back in 1992 I was working for a shop in Amarillo. I was their heavy line guy, got most of the clutches and engine replacements, but if it was slow, I helped the other guys out.
Had an '89 Turbo Trans Am come in with a "Cranks over but won't start problem". The guy who was assigned to that job tested fuel pressure.....zippo, nada.......he immediately deduces that the fuel pump is bad. Orders a new pump and while the part is being delivered proceeds to drop the tank and remove the old pump. I helped him get the tank down and watched him remove the "bad pump". I looked into the tank, chuckled, tried to tell him to stop NOW........got told to stfu and get back to my bay, HE knew what he was doing.
New pump arrives, he installs it, I help him get the tank back up and he wraps up the job. Lets the car down on the lift, gets in, turns the key to start it up...........cranks over, but won't start.
At this point the customer is there to pay for the job and get his car (shop owner's wife was the bookkeeper and ordered our parts and told the customers about how long it would take to do the job). Customer walks out and asks if it's fixed, other technician/parts replacer tells him "yeah, they always do this.....new pumps have to prime" blah blah blah........since the oh so very knowledgable tech had shunned me and told me to "stfu", I chose that moment to tell him and the customer to look at the fuel gauge.........which was all the over past the "E".
Five gallons of gas in the tank, and it fired right up.............$500 repair bill because the owner of the car AND the tech didn't think to look at the dang fuel gauge. I pointed out the tank was practically dry when he pulled the old pump out, and he blew me off.........
Not long after that fiasco, which resulted in a free pump for the customer after he threatened to sue and call the local TV stations about almost being defrauded on the repair, I got to witness the owner of the shop, who was an "expert" at the then pretty new and seemingly complicated EFI systems of the day, start calling the parts store and replacing part after part rather than actually diagnosing the problem on a Beretta.........
Yeah, when we parted ways, I was relieved to get out of that mess. They refused to allow us to see what we "should" have been getting paid for the jobs we were doing. I knew when I had done almost a dozen clutch jobs in one week, along with a couple engine R&R's, and my take home pay was only $250 that I was getting screwed and royally.
I still had friends at other shops who looked up the book hours on the jobs and I should have had a nice fat paycheck..........that ended my working on cars for pay...........I do it now only for fun or to help friend out.
-
DAYUM!!!
i'd almost kill to have someone that knows what the hell their doing.....and only hafta pay em $250/week.
personally, i'd have not helped him get the tank back in after that stfu comment......those things are bears in those cars. i'd have let him fight it.

Naa this one was much easier..... it was empty. :D
One of my guys in the shop asked me the best way to change the fuel pump on his 98 chevy half ton 4x4. He has one just like I sold last year to my son-in=law.
He said something about dropping the tank..... I told him it sounds easy... but it is much easier removing the bed. Six bolts and it lifts right off with the help of one friend. lol

i thought about that on the dodge ram1500 extended cab i just did a fuel pump on. the thing was a rust bucket though. i was afraid of breaking bolts.

I need opinion,
Which is a good auto engine scanner for the money. There are a few I see actron, OTC, Equus, autoexray, and some others. I prefer OBD2 and ABS together, but what I prefer and hear from people may be a different story.
Also prefer under 300 and can upgrade the firmware. Basically this will be for a Cavalier 2004. Maybe someday a newer vehicle or different vehicle.
I'm my own backyard mechanic, but I take to friends when I need the vehicle scanned.
Any opinions..................... ..........

Hahaha, CAP.........I hate to admit this, but........we got paid every other week.......that was $250 take home for TWO weeks work........that shop is no longer in business, the business was demolished several years ago. Yeah, I was getting raped big time; my son, now 19 years old, was 11 months old at the time, his mother, now my ex, wasn't working, and I was afraid, or just too timid, to stand up for myself the way I would now.
They left a computer out in the shop once, and it had the Chilton hourly rates for the various jobs on it.
Dunno what they thought we would do, we were all curious......so we started looking up the different jobs we were doing and saw that we were all getting screwed. That particular week I mentioned where I had done the clutch jobs..........IIRC, I should have gotten between 80 and 100 hours for those jobs.......I was new to the profession and was happy at the time to be making $12.50/hour commission.......when you realize that you busted your butt and only brought home pay equivalent to less than a quarter of what you should have made, it can make even the most laid back person lose their cool.
The day I told the owner and his witch with B wife to stick, I backed my truck up into my bay, started loading up my toolboxes and stuff, and he came over and told me if I would start staying later in the evening after the shop closed he was almost sure my paychecks would improve. I had written down the hours they had cheated me out of and showed them to him. He wasn't so friendly then, told me what they charged the customers and what I made was none of my business and tried to take the notebook I had written them in from me. I refused to hand it over, and went on loading my truck.
As I was driving off he told me to never set foot on his property again, but his facial expression wasn't anger.........it looked like fear. By the end of the next week he only had one mechanic left there, as three of us four walked out on him.
When I came back to town a few months later (we relocated to a town 3 hours away when I quit that job), the place looked like a ghost town. Another friend who worked at a dealership told me the word of what they had done had spread and no one, not even new grads from the local trade school, would go to work for them.

dam......those are the kind of shop owners that need to be gone. they give us all a bad name.
i tend to not like flatrate pay....i didn't like it when i worked for other people....always worked hourly....and i won't ever pay that way. i feel that although you find some gifted mechanics that can do a great job, and do it fast.....it also seems to make soooo many guys do crappy work.
i was gonna hire a kid from a local college as an apprentice....last fall. he was just by the shop the other day. i think i'm gonna hire him, as he's got a great attitude, and seems anxious to work and learn. also, he drives a dodge ram 4x4. none of that little fart cannon stuff. :devil

you're just looking for basics? i think sears(of all places) has a pretty nice setup. it does obd2, i think it does antilock, but not sure, it'll read codes, has some definitions, reads monitors and their status, and i think gives you basic datastream too. a friend of mine has one of theirs, and likes it a lot.
if you were willing to go to about $2500, i could put you in touch with my old boss in blackwood nj. he's selling a kick bellybutton otc scanner.

Dang, I have an 01 ranger. Dont want to experience that :(
The '01 Ranger, well her's is an Edge, wasn't that bad. It needs a special tool to get the nut that holds the fan off. You have to take off the alternator, and a couple other parts on the top front of the engine block to get at it. I forget their names atm. It's not bad, just a little tedious as the bolts for those are a good 4-6 inches long.
As long as you have the special tool and a good wrench in the right size comes off pretty easy.
You have to hold the shaft steady and then loosen the nut.
The problem was they didn't have the tool for my '93 Ranger, and you can't just twist it off because the fan will rotate the whole thing as you go. Add in 18 years of spinning in the direction that tightens and you've got a bit of a problem. Two of us, once we got the tools to get a grip on the assembly couldn't get it to budge at all. We practically lifted the whole front end off the ground trying.
Finally got mad enough at it, grabbed a metal punch and a hammer and just beat on it till it came loose. :devil
Second time around took half the time, tried once to loosen it, then went straight to the hammer.

You don;t think that is right? Just remember that you did not get paid a penny more that what he was willing to give you and not a penny less than what you were willing to accept :old:

Not entirely right, no. Taking advantage of someone because of their lack of knowledge does not make it right, it only makes it easier to do.
That being said, it is always wise to be aware of what the average wage for you skill set is in the working world and compare it to your own.
Your last sentence holds true, though. Most of the time (not always) raises are not given unless scheduled or asked for. :aok
-

i think he showed good restraint when the guy tried saying his paycheck would get better if he stayed later. and when the guy tried taking the notepad out of his hand.
i was lucky. a shop i quit at once, the owner tried to tell me i couldn't take my tools right then. it turned into a yelling match. my friend was already there with the flatbed to get my box. he's known me a long time. as soon as the voices went up, he stepped in close. he knew what was coming. the guy kept yelling, and i went quiet. now mike stepped in between us. he then nearly tackled me, to prevent me from getting myself arrested. i am thankful for that, because i did totally lose control, and that shop owner came within a second or so of waking up in the er.
the police showed up a few minutes later(mike had already called them), and kept the guy away from me while we loaded my box onto the flatbed.

Cap,
Do you have a shop camera? If not it would be a cheap and wise investment. Nothing beats a he said, she said like a picture.
If I was still in business I'd be using it on every job!

dedalos.........your conclusion was my fault......insufficient data as it were.
When the guy hired me, he pointed out how professional he was, how they went by the book, the book meaning the labor manual for each job. He pointed out the labor guides in the office, so I knew what he was talking about. At the place where I had worked before that job, I was friends with several of the service writers and knew how they figured labor costs.
That's what I was meaning in my previous post. When he hired me he was clear that the jobs would pay what the books called for. It was later on when myself and others started digging and finding out what the various repairs should have been paying US that things went so sour.
He had won a bid for a service contract with a local company for service and repair of their fleet of vehicles, mainly Ford F350's and F450's. All of them were manual transmissions, loaded to the gills with tools and equipment, so much so that we didn't have a lift in our shop that would raise one of them up. No transmission jacks either........getting one of those transmissions removed and then reinstalled was an adventure. Come-alongs, straps, whatever I could find to help lift the transmissions back into place was standard fare. It was like being a backyard mechanic but inside his shop.
CAP can tell you, having the proper tools, being able to get a vehicle up on lift is a time saver when you are working underneath a vehicle. Not being able to do that, having to slide around on the floor took time and extra effort.
On top of that, it seemed that almost every truck I worked on had a transmission with an "EXPERIMENTAL" tag or sticker on the transmission. Never knew what was up with that......had to special order some parts when I was doing a clutch job on those.
The jist of my statement was this: I was doing work that, if he had been honest, would have paid me well. He knew my family's financial situation, and paid me just enough to get by, knowing that I was young and not always sure of myself. IMO, he took advantage of that and paid myself and others a lot less than what we had coming for the work we performed.
It was the equivalent of someone hiring you to work for say, $20/hour, then when payday comes, your check is only a fraction of what it should have been. If you put in 40 hours, you expect pay for those 40 hours. What he was doing was like only paying you for 10 of those 40 hours, and then telling you it was none of your business how many hours he paid you for. That's dishonest in anyone's book.

i've got security cameras now. 2 in the office, and 1 in the shop. i'm upgrading soon to 2 in the bays, 4 outside, and keeping 2 in the office. in addition, i keep a digital voice recorder in the office. i record nearly everything audio in the office.
also, i have a digital camera and a digital camcorder. i use those to help educate my customers. if they're not here when i find a problem, i'll video or photo it in order to show the customer why i sold them what i sold them. i figure someone that knows exactly why i'm charging what i am, is a customer that'll come back over and over.
i was just looking at a contour hd camera, which is pretty small, and great quality videos.....those can be headstrap mounted, which would be good for recording the entire job.

I sincerely hope that you disclose this fact to everyone that you speak to while in the office. Otherwise, any evidence obtained this way will be inadmissible, at best and at worst, could be considered eavesdropping if someone wanted to push it.
Same goes for the cameras.
I think a sign is sufficient, but I would double check to see what Camden's rules say about it.
I understand the need for them where you are and I would hate to see you lose out because of it...

new jersey is a one party state. only one person in a conversation has to know it's being recorded. since i'm doing the recording..........
i've been burned in the past by people that deny saying what they said, or claim they never ok'd something. mechanics almost always lose when it's a "he said she said" kind of thing.

I found out that my sister has been recording conversations with her ex. I told her that she had better tell him that she is doing it, because PA is not the same as Jersey in that respect. :cry

yea.......and i have to be..and am....careful when i call a customers cell phone. if it's an out of state number, but they live here, i'm not sure of the rules then, so if i turn on the recorder, i let them know.
i may upgrade to a commercial automatic recorder. if/when i do that, i will have one of those recordings playing saying that the call is being recorded.

Underground Racing messed up a customer's Viper and it came back to them multiple times whereupon they only fixed the symptom (damage) and not the cause of the problem.
I got the car, changed airflow to the radiator back to stock by removing the air/air intercooler up front and added an air to water intercooler system with ice reservior in the rear of the car, and fabricated some fashionable aluminum stuff for the tank and nitrous system.
He took it back to underground and expressed his displeasure that they never fixed the issue that was causing his engine overheats...........so underground threatens him via e.mail that they had video of him talking about going to the strip club near that shop and would send it to his wife.
Huge backfire and we reaped many super high end customers from that.

i've got a friend with a high hp viper that had his suspension done somewhere down there in florida.......spent a ton of money on it. i think this is gonna turn out to be a 9 second street car....possibly low 9's, as it's faster than his coupe.....which should run high 9's.......but i think he's in the process of suing the place right now for something they either screwed up, or never did but charged him for.

Ah, so you have checked :aok
I found out that my sister has been recording conversations with her ex. I told her that she had better tell him that she is doing it, because PA is not the same as Jersey in that respect. :cry
PA requires you to protect the criminals from letting the cat out of the bag. :D
Texas is a one party state.

I'm gonna add that to my list of reasons...

California
Connecticut
Delaware
Florida
Illinois
Maryland
Massachusetts
Michigan
Montana
New Hampshire
Pennsylvania
Washington
^^^ Not single-party states

there's a way around that too.
if the conversation is in a public place, you have no reasonable expectation of privacy, therefore, a recording could "accidentally" happen. :noid

2-nails and a 5"x10" sign near the main entrance to the establishment - good to go. (which actually brings into play the fu!@ PITA issue of treating the ADA accessable entance as the main one or an alternative main entryway, but anywho)
The law is more (almost specifically) for phone calls, where they have to do the "quality control/training purposes/recording to cover our asses" disclaimer before turning it on. Single-party use of recording devices for asset protection, ala private or business, passes through courts easier here than fermented tofu (with a distinct line drawn at entrapment or using it against the unwary party for personal gain).

Also, isn't there something along the lines of all establishments provided a current and valid buisness license issued by the state board of commerce are recognized as public places of buisness?
Some mumbo jumbo along the same lines of beign issued the certificate under compliance and then having to maintain complaince to the standards for practice, else you loose your license to practice said buisness... *shrug*

OK, do I need to come out and say it? :lol Any shop recording conversations will eventually wish they had not done so. Of coarse, I am not talking about all the honest mechanics that are here. Only about the others ;)

How so?
There are literally thousands of companies that record phone conversations for "Training or quality control purposes". It is usually the first thing that you hear when put on hold and the message repeats itself at just about 20 second intervals.

I have to laugh when I hear that too. They are usually the ones with the worst service.... but they are nice about it. :rofl

You missed the key word. Key word was "honest".

And the first thing I remind them of before asking to be transfered to a supervisor when one rep starts saying things contrary to another. :D Of cource, I get the option that sounded best/sweetest for me.

Finding a mechanic these days to admit in court that they're anything but always and completely "honest".... they must be getting wiser.

:O
I simply asked if you had a shop cam,a little digital cam to take pics of parts, the underside of a car or any thing that could potentially become an issue.
I wasnt thinking surveillance or the like but I suppose if you have a lot and customers cars overnight then I understand. It was the idiot who was blaming you that had me thinking a simple pic of the vehicle before it left the shop would have solved any issue.
:salute
