the original was great.....
anyone else looking forward to seeing the new one? I am
think they are gonna screw it up? I hope not, same guy that plays Thor is in it......
-
While I'm sure it will be a good action movie, it's not going to come anywhere near the original. These remakes etc make me cringe. It won't be long before someone tries remaking other classics like The Goonies.
-
How the hell can anyone take this one seriously when it's the North Koreans invading the US? They can't get a flight into Syria without begging Iraqi overflight permissions, what makes them think they could land a single division in the US.... lol
-
its the N Koreans...hmmm didn't know that, just saw some previews, really liked the first one....plus I am a fan of that guy who played Thor....I hope its good.
I think hollywood has potential to do some awesome stuff, but most often they fail miserably.

Its North Korea, not China?
Anyways, while I liked the original as a kid, as an adult, I think the original is really really bad. I want to say "sucks", but I'm sure that will come out as something else on these forums. The acting was awful, the premise was stupid. Now that the Berlin wall fell (25 years ago or whatever), I'm no longer required to say I like this bad movie. So I think it is certainly possible that the re-make will far exceed the original. They don't have a very high standard to meet. On the other hand, no one takes the threat seriously today, which is far different than in the cold war days. So this remake will not make nearly as much as an impact on society than the original no matter how good it is, that can't be disputed.

The remake sounds kind of stupid. The only relationship to the original seems be the kids fight a guerilla war and call themselves Wolverines.
Movie synopsis
lt's Friday night and the residents of Spokane are consumed with the thoughts of the local high school football game. The Wolverines just lost a nail biter and the team's quarterback Matt Eckert is trying to shake off the tough loss. Adding to Matt's worries is the sudden and unexpected return of his older brother Jed (played by Chris Hemsworth, STAR TREK). After their mom died, Jed left town with no warning and enlisted in the military. Now Jed is home unexpectedly after serving in Afghanistan and the brothers' relationship is strained at best. After some encouraging words from his dad and his girlfriend Erica, Matt heads home to sleep off his loss. The next morning Matt is startled awake as their whole house shakes violently. Running outside, Matt and Jed find the sky filled with parachutes and the streets lined with military vehicles. For the first time in history, the United States is being occupied by foreign armies. The invaders are calling themselves the "People's Liberation Army" and they easily outnumber the citizens of Spokane. Matt and Jed's worst nightmares are actualized as missiles scream into nearby houses, rocking them with explosions. On the once quiet streets of their neighborhood, U.S. citizens are being rounded up and taken prisoner. Suddenly, with horror, Matt realizes that the foreign invaders have captured his father and his girlfriend Erica. Matt screams out to them, vowing to save them as Jed drags his brother away to safety.
With the town completely overrun by the enemy, Matt and Jed watch helplessly as their father gives up his life to protect his family, allowing his sons to escape into the Cascade mountains. Determined to fight for their community and rescue what's left of their hometown, the brothers assemble a ragtag group of high school students and begin to fight back. Being a war hero, Jed is able to train this unlikely group of heroes the same way that he was trained. Soon they are transformed into sharp shooting, camouflaged, freedom fighters. Known as the "Wolverines" (after Matt's football team), the group soon becomes a national symbol for the resistance and the hope of Americans everywhere. What this enemy didn't realize is that what makes the U.S. great is not the size of its military, but rather the men and women who wear the uniform and the communities they come from.
With the help of an underground network of scared but brave townspeople, the Wolverines quickly go from a minor nuisance to serious threat as they begin to batter away at the invaders. Using their superior knowledge of the landscape that they grew up around gives them a strategic advantage. The foreign invaders want to destroy the American way of life but the Wolverines aren't going to let that happen.
Meanwhile, Matt is searching tirelessly for his girlfriend Erica who is being held prisoner by the invaders. He will stop at nothing to rescue the girl he loves even if it means risking his life to do so. With the fate of the country on the shoulders of these small town heroes, the Wolverines must summon the courage to overcome impossible odds and unity a town against the greatest threat this country ever faced. Outnumbered and with limited supplies, the Wolverines must rely on the spirit instilled in every small town across the U.S... protect your neighbor at all costs, because even though they aren't your blood, they're still your family. RED DAWN will show you that when this country is in its darkest hour, salvation can be found where we least expect it.

If they cut the tin cup of blood out I am not watching it.

Its North Korea, not China?
They were originally Chinese bad guys, but it was found to be too offensive to the Chinese and might cause tension, so they had to go back and change the bad guys to N. Koreans. True story. If you do a search of this forum for a previous thread for the movie, the details about the change were posted. Just another example of our country being sissified not wanting to offend anybody. I say F*** the Chinese.

Yeah, that's the Australian Red Dawn rip off. It'd be a really cool movie if I was about 15 again.

It needed Paul Hogan and Mad Max.

The Book was written at the same time as Red Dawn. So it really isn't a rip off.
THAT SAID
it sucked.... hardcore.... I wanted to watch my countrymen get mowed down by MG fire.... purely because the idea of us repelling a chinese invasion is so ludicrous that I can't begin to describe it..... not as ludicrous as the NKA invading the US however....
-
That's what I got from "Tomorrow, When the War Began"; I really didn't get the impression that the Australians put up much of a fight... It was hopeless, and while brave, those kids were going to die sometime soon.

At least they didn't care about PO'ing the Chinese since it is clearly J-10s shooting down the RAAF F-18.

I can tell you right now, the Aussies definitely WOULD, put up one HELL of a fight. Trust me, anyone here who has met some of our guys knows how tough they are. Their primary training partner is the USMC.

Oh I'm sure China has no interest what so ever in Australia. Nope, should be fine.

Yeah, I misread that.
-
A. China is fed by us. So they aren't likely to invade.
B. Us repelling a Chinese invasion should it occur, is impossible until the US Navy turns up. (I know people are expecting my pride to get in the way, but I'm being logical, with firepower numbering 2 million strong heading at us... an army 10% the size of my countries population is going to wipe us out)
C. That being said. The Australian military is at least in the top ten most modern and well trained fighting forces in the world. Our ratio in my opinion compared to Chinese troops would be at least 4 to 1. But as I said, when your country only has roughly 200,000 fighting men and women total across all three services... it ain't enough.
As for resistance. If assisted by allies, the Australian population could wage one HELL of a guerrilla war, myself being one of them. If I wasn't already killed as a member of the ADF.
-

Unfortunately the Chinese would mop the floor with Australia. The Lithuanians would too for that matter.
During the first wave the enemy would air drop thousands of cases of beer. Once the Australians learned of the free beer, they would proceed to get completely inebriated. Then during the second wave they just walk in an take over C&C centers, communications and distribution hubs. Game over.
-
The only logical means for the Chinese and North Koreans being able to invade another country would be this.
Deep in the Himayalas, secret underground aircraft hangars housing thousands of 4 engine cargo planes and tactical fighter aircraft would be used to transport manpower and material hundreds of miles to their targets. They could roll Taiwan, Japan, Philippines, Malayasia, Eastern Siberia, South Korea and Northern Australia inside of 24 hours with coordinated attacks via aircraft and paratroopers.
The single Chinese aircraft carrier would be steaming all over South China Sea launching coastal attacks with the help of the Asian Pirate gangs and being able to deny US aircraft carriers from entering the same waters.
In reality, they could never sustain the ability to handle all of that for more than 2 months. Our B-2s and F-117's would continually take out Chinese and North Korean targets every night. B-52 raids would shell shock so many that white flags would pop up so quickly. Once the USMC showed up, all resistance would be futile.
Just enjoy the film for the sure entertainment of a what if scenario happened.
Until the Chinese develop sharks with lazer beams, I think we will be safe,
-
During the first wave the enemy would air drop thousands of cases of beer. Once the Australians learned of the free beer, they would proceed to get completely inebriated
That would work about as well in Australia as it would in Canada. It is based on the assumption that beer will make them less combat effective. Beer makes people of both countries stronger and more willing to fight. You might as well spike their rations with PCP.

I will see it and I'm optimistic. In watching some of the previews I wonder if they hired an actual firearms expert and or military adviser to help out on the set. From what I've seen it appears more like a John Woo kung fu action movie than it does a modern military based war movie. The use of full auto tec-9 pistols in an ambush scene made me do a :headscratch: . We'll see.

The Chinese economy is predicted to overtake the U.S. economy in about 8 years. Big difference is, of course, GDP per capita. However, the Chinese wealth isn't in the hands of its people, but concentrated in the powerful Communist Party. So on one hand China is far from being as wealthy as the U.S. (per capita), but on the other hand the Chinese government has far more control over that economy than the U.S. government, and can literally fund huge projects on a whim.

I watched battleship......good effects....but...ehhh....sux to, I am a Liam Neeson fan. If we hop in the winibego, drive to Tijuana, sneak back in with 500 cherry bombs, buy a green tarp/screen and then find a recently grazed upon cow pasture - think they'll give us $210M and get to star in it for us Rihanna and Brooklyn Decker? We can probabley twist Liam Neeson into driving the tractor, he was a forklift operator. A script?... what's that?!

Im with you guys on this one, north korea......really holly wood? At least china has the funding/smarts to build some type of fleet to even invade. They have to drop a dime somewhere in this movie saying it some kind of alternative universe where the chinese & russians control 3/4th of the planet or some crap.
maaaaan...the movie with the moon nazi's is more plausible.
-
Yes the producers had to change the invaders to the North Koreans because they feared the Chinese would be annoyed. So annoyed in fact they might even declare war and...............well invade the US! :furious
Life imitating art!
In fact it's more plausible for the Russians to invade the US. Just like the plot in MW2.
But whatever the plot there has to be a considerable suspension of disbelief. Mind you, many doomsday preppers have long ago suspended any common sense and probably think it's a documentary! :noid

in the original red dawn most of the troops were supposedly cuban or nicaraguan. but in the wolverings fightings they were almost always russian.

The basic premise of the original Red Dawn was ridiculous. I actually analyzed that scenario as a staff exercise once upon a time. Suffice to say that while it's just 60 air miles across the Bering straight (as Sarah Palin loved to point out) it's nearly 4000 sea miles from Vladivostok to Anchorage, those being the closest ports capable of mounting the invasion and supporting the ground operation, respectively. And then it's another 2000 miles by land to the continental US. On a two lane highway. Through the mountains. In the Arctic. As for the supposed airdrop out of Cuba, all the runways in Central America couldn't support it. The only believable part was the private arsenals to be found in Colorado high-schools.
But at least the Soviets had ships and planes that could, at least in theory, travel the required distances with division sized forces. China? No. North Korea? They can't even pave the roads at their "missile" base.
I could go on, but I won't, because I still hope to see Ronald Reagan's Nicaraguans from coming over the border at Brownsville, Texas and I don't want to discourage them. It's just two days drive! After they conquer Honduras, Guatamala, El-Salvador and Mexico of course, and assuming their 100 T-55 tanks didn't break down on their two-thousand mile Le Mans rally through jungle, mountain and desert... Communism on the Doorstep! Guess the Gipper wasn't sure 1 Cav div there in Fort Hood would be able to win that one for him.
Now that would be a film worth watching. Maybe for a sequel Grenada and Panama could tag-team?

That is true. I just wonder how low the standards sink in order to dumb the scripts down to the lowest common denominator.
I mean how hard would it be to make actors actually have military haircuts in a war flick. Or provide at least quasi believable opponents?
It's not like they do not reuse the same old tired scripts...ie this one. I'd just like to see a touch of effort put into the product.
I don't think entertainment and realism are necessarily mutually exclusive.

I know it's not the same situation for several reasons, but this line brought back images of nose-to-tail convoys of Russian APCs, tanks etc. filing down poorly maintained highways through the Caucuses into Georgia in 2008. How impossible would an invasion along that highway be , exactly? Have really no more been built by now (sorry I'm an east-coaster)

semp
It's called Tomorrow when the War Began, you must be confusing it with Red Dawn. If you guys want to watch it, then you can see it on Netflix and sometimes HBO. It's decent, I'm pretty sure it's an indie film. It has the same plot almost as Red Dawn except it's about some Australian teenagers going camping. Then when they come back they realize China invaded and the country is under occupation. They soon start doing non-conventional warfare stealing the enemies weapons and performing ambushes on bases and convoys.
-
@Motherland - It's not hard to drive a road, it's another to fight it. As Soda points out, backed-up convoys like the ones in your picture are an attack pilot's dream. More to the point, combat power is limited by the frontage over which it can be applied. Below is a stretch of the road at the Yukon border.
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Yukon_border_sign_on_Klondike _Highway_2.jpg (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Yukon_border_sign_on_Klondike_Highway_2.jpg)
As you can see, even tanks can't operate off the road here - the ground is either too steep (on the left) or too wet (on the right though it's not so obvious). Even infantry will find moving off-road hard. The frontage here is two tanks (cramped) or a dismounted infantry platoon. Disable the lead tank, and the road is blocked until it can be moved. A single dismounted tank-hunter team (4 guys with 4 missiles) and a couple of snipers, hidden pretty much anywhere in this vista, could stall a division here for a day. There's a thousand kilometers like this with NO route options (after that you get a second highway, just like this one, for another thousand). Now imagine cratering the road, blowing the many, many bridges, artillery scattered mines, MLRS and airstrikes. Oh yeah, and winter arrives in October and it isn't leaving until May. There is little terrain on this planet more favourable to the defence. Invading through Alaska is a non-starter even at this basic tactical level. So is invading the US at all, anywhere, on this and many other levels, but that's another post.
@USRanger This is why I referenced Reagan's quote about the Nicaraguan communist/terrorist sanctuary being just two days drive from the Texas border. Yes, you can drive your car from Managua to Brownsville in two days, but I sure hope Reagan didn't really believe that meant the Nicaraguans posed an invasion threat. Unfortunately I'm equally sure he intended to imply it to gain the support of the geographically and militarily challenged for his intervention policies. Exaggerating threats is a common political tactic, and movies like Red Dawn (either version) may be simple entertainment, but they also support the foreign threat narrative. This has real impact, and its happening today (Hands up all who believe Saddam's nuclear weapons were hidden in Iran). By all means enjoy the film. Just know that the basic premise is ridiculous.
-
Reminds me of the highway of death Kuwait.

Another take on things...
All of those criticizing the premise behind both the original “Red Dawn” and this remake are assuming that the geopolitical landscape we have today (or 30 years ago, in the case of the original movie) is the same in the movie’s “universe”. The original was released in 1984, but they don’t ever tell you if the story takes place in 1984, or sometime in the not-to-distant future. In this earlier version, Russia invades through Mexico, if memory serves me, and made use of Cuban (or some Central American nation’s or nations’) troops for occupation duty, backed by Soviet logistics. They imply that Russian troops are also involved, probably at the front, but the USSR is also fighting China, who comes into the war on our side (or at least are co-belligerents). So the geopolitical situation in the film was very likely different from the reality of the time it was released.
The movie also implies that D.C. was hit in some sort of surprise, but limited nuclear attack. A large majority of our forces are (were) stationed in Europe, and the film also states that NATO basically surrenders when the USSR threatens them with a nuclear strike, hanging the cream of our conventional combat forces out to dry. With both sides still holding enough nuclear forces to decimate the other, the initial success of the invasion is replaced by a war of attrition sets. Perhaps like Japan in the Second World War, the Soviets hoped the will to resist would be quickly broken by the decapitation strike against our military and political leadership, and the rapid occupation and pacification of a significant portion of CONUS.
Now let’s turn to this modern version. I have only seen the trailer, so I’m going to have to make a few assumptions. The year is 2021. Let’s assume that the United States, after numerous and costly wars in the middle-east, finally says enough is enough. We’ve managed to overcome the political opposition to utilizing our own vast reserves of fossil fuels, as well as our fear of nuclear energy, and achieved energy independence. With anti-military isolationist in power in the US, we’ve essentially abandoned the world stage, pulling out of all military alliances, pulling all forward deployed forces home, and decommissioning a large percentage of our military; China steps in to fill the vacuum.
A currency and trade war brews between China and the US. The Chinese move to replace the US dollar as the world’s reserve currency with China’s currency. This trashes the US economy and, finding itself suddenly isolated and without allies, the US retaliates by defaulting on the huge national debt (a significant percentage is held by...wait for it...China). Thinking the US is now just a paper tiger with no national will to resist, China builds up military forces in Central and South America, as well as in Cuba (they are Cuba’s new best buddy, having helped them develop oil production in the Gulf, during those years that anti-fossil fuel extremists were in power in Washington).
From here, the pattern follows the first Red Dawn movie: a limited nuclear strike, followed up by an invasion by land (again, through Mexico), sea (having spent decades building a blue-water navy), and air. The front-line troops are Chinese regulars, but they make use of Korean troops (North Korea having rolled over South Korea after the US pulled out) to seize and occupy certain strategic crossroads (one in Colorado, as it happens). Half the country is occupied, but the war stalemates; the USA manages to hold onto about two-thirds of its territory, and China (while extremely powerful) lacks the logistical skill to press the attack and achieve a decisive breakout. A resistance is quick to form in the occupied territories, to disrupt the occupation...
Least that's one way it could go. I'm not saying it's a likely scenario, but it's not totally outside the realm of the possible.
-

@sabre - you have the backstory for the original nailed. It was a 1970s War College scenario, as I recall. And of course it's a different geopolitical universe - so is Star Trek. The important thing is to realize it's not a POSSIBLE geopolitical universe. We could imagine the Soviet Union invading western Europe. They had that capability. They never had the capability to invade North America, no matter how the dice fell.
Same same, China could roll over North Korea - the capability exists. North Korea can't roll over South Korea. Yes they have 3400 tanks. The most modern are T-62s. They also can't nuke Hawaii, and they don't have stealth paint, no matter what Wikipedia says. Just google for a nightime sat image of the Korean peninsula. It makes plain why NK is not a threat to anyone, though both they and other players like to pretend that they are for their own internal political reasons.
Again, enjoy the movie, just know it's not a possible scenario. Star Trek isn't either. Still worth catching the video.
:)
-
If you want to get hung up on plausibility, you should never go watch a science fiction movie. Who can say exactly what may or may not be plausible in the future?
I don't know if the film will mention pre-cursers to the US invasion. I don't know if there is some background of enemy forces getting incrementally closer to North America, or if it's straight from North Korea to the shores of the US.
Suppose China embarks on a huge military build up. Allies with North Korea and arms them to the teeth. Deploys some sort of new secret weapons (alluded to in the trailer) Who knows maybe they find a way to neutralize our nuclear capability and significantly cripple our conventional capability over seas.
Who knows? just suspend likelihood and enjoy the move.
-
Will Chinese take aways become cheaper if they invade?
To be honest Mr Chows special fried rice is very reasonably priced :old:
He knows a lot about cars as well :old:

North Korea isn't capable of invading anyone. This is because within minutes of stepping over the border, North Korean troops will see how much they've been lied to.

I am North Korean :old:

I was part of the actual FEBA (Forward Edge of the Battle Area) in South Korea when I was stationed at Taegu (K2) AFB.
We had some 51st TFW F-4's there that were tasked as 'first response' 'in the event of'
..our ORI's were the shortest I had ever been part of :)
Launch, combat turn, done.
We got weekly breifings on what they had vs what we could do 'in the event of'
The North Koreans were and are still so outclassed in every arena of warfare it is just silly to think of them engaging in hostile actions anywhere.
The major impression I got when I was there ..
..the US Forces were there to keep the South Koreans from wipiing the North Korean Government from the face of this Earth.
Even so .. listening to late nite radio traffic on our scanners ..
..a flight of South Korean F-4's lost one when they went ... umm ..
..sightseeing. Officially reported he hit a mountain in the dark.
They went up loaded and came back empty.
A Coastal Patrol boat went into Inchon Harbor and shot up the place one evening
..shortly after that KAL air liner was shot down.
..and so on.
The South Koreans make no bones about it..
..they are very much ready, willing, and able to do the deed anytime.

I saw that they were going to do a remake of the 80's Cold War inspired Red Dawn and thought what the heck, maybe it will be ok. So I am just seeing if anyone is gonna take the time and go see it and what you guys think about it. I am gonna try to go see it. I like the way they changed the enemy from the Soviet Horde's to the North Korean's. I also think that the way they made it as if it were to happen in our world of Smart Bombs and unmanned Hellfire shooting Predator's. Thoughts???

There's a thread titled "Red Dawn"
-
Saw it and liked it. Very much worth checking out and it's not just the North Koreans that invade.
-
Bermuda too?

All 6 of them.

Moon nazis!? :rock

The movie originally had the Chinese as the invaders, but that was apparently too sensitive a concept, and it was changed post production to North Korea.
So In your mind replace North Korea with China and thats what the movie originally intended.
-
North Korea only invaded a small portion of the U.S. in the movie.
-
Maybe one day there'll be a movie about the United States invading North Korea, only to be driven out by the determined self-sacrifice of a small band of ordinary young people who refuse to knuckle under to the foreigners bent on stealing their nation.
Nah, too unrealistic. The US would never invade a weaker nation. Though if it ever did, you can be sure it would win...

Lol, well I think I started a new topic about the same thing few days ago and didn't see your post Ink. I am looking forward to seeing the movie. I am a big fan of the original. Mostly because of the whole "what if" plot. I like how they replaced the Russians with the North Korean's this time around and I am anxious to see what, if any political issues may come from it. Well, if ya see it before me let me know what ya think of it without ruining it lol. :salute

Lol, I just saw that and I believe I must have been half asleep when I posted it because I did not see INK's post.
