... I found 10 Bishops, 16 Knights and 1 Rook in the arena.
Can the Rooks now apply for "endangered species" status at the IUCN?
-
We need more Euro-time players.
-
You should have waited a few minutes................ there would have been 17 Knights on. I had to chuckle when eny tossed my D25 Jug. ENY was 29 .... pretty much just LW planes to fly. I took the Razorback instead. :P
-
Just about everyday as prime begins, the Rooks are being slammed by knits and bish. Not much fun at times when you get vulched before you get wheels up. Most often too, the strats have been hammered from the knit bish unhampered raids.
-
I dont know where all the Rooks have gone but its definitely affecting the game. I think a lot are bailing due to disorganization and becoming Bish. Is there even any Rooks squads anymore?
-
Rooks have been consistently outnumbered almost ever day I have logged in since my return. It is really hampering my low number country hopping...lol

Even bish have a hard time getting organised, the days of this being a exciting multi-player game with a ongoing war are slim to none. Really lacks life. Need more people for missions. I just loaded age of empires 3 and sim city 4 on my computer. After 9 years I'm back where I started, only no awesome ww2 fighter game to play.

I vividly remember the following filling up the comm channels all the time:
"Mission up!"
"Anyone need a gunner?"
"ALERT NOE A25" (<- like every 10 minutes :rofl)
"XYZ wants you to join their squad. Join yes no?"
"LTARS at V2"
"Any squad recruiting?"
"I NEED GUNNER NOW"
"Fighter sweep posted"
"I SEE SUM NAZIS" - <enthusiastic squeaker voice on range bursting your eardrums>
About six weeks ago subscribed again for the launch of AH3. About 170 game hours I only have seen a mission posted once (of course it failed with only 9 players on my country), and none of the rest at all.
Even when considering the player numbers, AH life seems to have become stale and kinda 'on autopilot'. Especially when you look at the squads, which IMHO had been the very foundation of this game. Squads taught the new players the ropes, squads where driving the gameplay. Back in the day only a very few players were not part of a squad. Now we have an astonishing amount of squadless players, and about no one seems to be looking for new players.
When I came back under a new name I was at no point trying to pose as a "new guy", but still I was expecting a few invitations before word got around who I actually was - particularly after landing some good kill tallies. Years ago I absolutely HAD to form my solo squad just to prevent the constant squad invites popups.
Did not get a single one this time.
Sometimes I think this is a retirement home. We being just a few old geezers with little enthusiasm and lot of memories of the 'good old times'. And the few young folks occasionally dropping by for a visit, looking to get the hell outta here as soon as possible. :old:

When I first started playing I thought $15 per mo was a steal. Now not so much I just got back and am super rusty I remember that we had an option to use an outside view I used it a lot at the beginning and then transitioned into the cockpit after learning about SA while using outside view. Since this is no longer a option I have a feeling younger newer to cockpit flying folks just find it too restricting right from the start and disappear before their two weeks if even close to being used. I've got three friends who all expressed the same when I guided them here. There are a lot of things keeping new players away that can be controlled.
I can only imagine the Issues that will come between those who and those who have not. By that I mean how are folks without VR going to be competitive with folks who have Vastly Superior SA?
Sure folks will find ways to be more competitive but it's undeniable that folks with VR will or should have a great advantage, for them it's basically a different game.
I guess it mimics real life money and resources win wars, those with custom cockpits and multi monitors have also enjoyed an advantage so I guess I'm rambling but so much effort is made to keep in game somewhat even there is no control of the external factors so the game will never reflect the greatest skill but rather a combination of skill and money.

I ask people all the time if they want to join our squad....you are 100% right about squads are the driving force of the game...you are also right about the shade thing...I believe that 80% or more of the new names I see are actually old vets coming back...not interested in joining a squad
I think the AH3 is awesome...and as Silent said yesterday to me "in this game you actually have to shoot"
My new computer will be ready by Frame 2 of FSO next Friday... :rock....but I have been having no problems playing with my FR 20 to 40 normally hanging right at 28FPS...the needing a super computer to play AH3 excuse doesn't work...
Now a short lesson on how to find a fight with low numbers and a high ENY...
1. Find an enemy base that is within a sector of a friendly base.
2. Select 190F8 with large bomb and 12 rockets from hanger.
3. Takeoff and climb at 2000 FPM WEP on until 5 or 6K.
4. Drop bomb on town and use rockets to deack.
5. If no one has upped by now, bail and come back.
6. By now there is a GV waiting for you...bomb him or shoot at him with rockets if its a tank(don't screw around with wirbs...bomb them)
7. If the wirb has killed you, come back...you are fighting someone at least...bomb or rocket the crap outta him.
8. If you are tired of the wirb...get a TU2 with the 2 x 1 ton bombs and the 4 500s...drop the VH with the big bombs and hit town again...
9. With the VH down now...the manned gun heros are watching you...they will now up a fighter to kill your TU...but they don't realize the capability of the TU as a fighter...
10. With these steps...you can find a fight at ANY TIME WITH ANY AMOUNT OF PLAYERS ON!!!!! This tactic only takes about 30 min to work...by the time you get the town deacked there is usually a fighter or gv ready to throw down...
You can use your imagination and come up with any fighter/attack - bomber combo to do this with....
I was on the other day...there were 22 people in flight...I picked a base started running F8s and TUs and ended up with a furball, first me against like 4 nits, then friendly's saw it and started coming...it turned into a fight that lasted probably 4 hours

There seriously needs to be a map change at 12am-12PM est time, that is smaller and more condensed during the off hours. This would allow action to he more condensed and for players to have an easier chance to find combat.

Change sides. Bish fly with high eny. Not anyone's fault that rooks aren't on. You can go knit, rook or bish. Fly together if you are rook.
Suck it up Sally. Some people play when they can. Not anyone's fault. Seems since the game has started Bishops seem to be predominantly Eastern time. Nothing has changed.
Rooks may be predominantly PAC time. Explains why when I generally log in bases taken yesterday by Bish are now Rook or Knit. After 11PM EST Bish are usually lowest numbered side.
The Bish complain about high eny. The rest complain about numbers. That is the way it was, is now and probably will be.
-
I thought the 12-12-1 situation this morning was good fun, it was like a defacto early-mid war fighter scrap between the Bish and nits.
Needless to say my LA5 scared them all off :uhoh

How about two countries? Change a few things around to make it work.
I know someone will say "tried that, didnt work"
The situation is a little different now.

Maybe adjusting side switch times to an hour or two while there are less then 30 players on.

Side switching is always laced with players who are seeking a fight where they can score big numbers while vulching. Rarely do players switch to help the underdog.

+1 switched to rooks for the first time in years for the strict intention of fighting overwhelming numbers last night
-
I have been swapping to low number side every time I have logged in since returning. However the last week has been 100% rook due to overwhelming odds

The problem with Rooks, to my way of thinking, is they lack an identity. They need a new brand. Let's face it, Robby the Rook isn't cutting it anymore.
And recent attempts at building a new brand identity have fallen somewhat short. The logo for the failed "Rook Nation" movement looked more like a playing card from a children's cardgame:
And consultations with leading design firms produced images, that while elegant, lacked the necessary power and aggression.
Others took the aggressive aspect a little too far:

The search goes on for a logo that combines strength with the power and determination underlying Rook culture:

This afternoon I was flying in the current map after installing my new video card. The sun was going down and the way it hit the mountains? It really looked stunning, that and a new moon coming up.
I think the game looks terrific and it plays as good as it ever did. Ive tried a lot of sims and always liked this flight model best. Even with the old card the game looked dang good, I cant help but think theres a real good chance things will pick up a lot. We now have almost everything we ever wanted in a flight sim so Im feeling positive we'll pick up new and returning members.
Im not wealthy either and upgrading this box is no small thing for me just like building or buying a new one isnt for most of us. But I think that AH3 was a good middle ground for graphics quality and adjustment for older machines. Its really a great upgrade with a fantastic selection of vehicles, weapons, and airplanes to pick from.

He is wrong there. Everyone has their own reasons, but I would bet that half the switchers do it to help the underdog.
As a long-time, non-vulching, underdog-helping side switcher, that's my two million pesos.

the rules need to be changed so a single player has more impact on field captures. With all the resupplying going on bombing anything feels like a waste of time.

As long as you can swap back to your "home" country before the Loyalist are on! I hate hearing non stop accusations of Spying and Cheating. That does alot to hinder any desire to swap countries. Just saying, it can ruin any fun pretty quick.

From my recent experience, I have yet to experience much grief for switching countries. Then again I am not to terribly concerned with winning the war.
-
I'd say you don't need to make a single player have more effect on base capture as much as you "need" jobs for single players to do that give the illusion of accomplishing something. I always thought that was why HQ got zapped so often, not malice as much as being the biggest target for an individual that had any consequence. Beating the crap out of an airfield with a tank feels good, so something like that. (maybe killing trains having some kind of easy to observe effect?)
-
I hate to say this but the Rooks are slowly turning into a knit like country. Sad but true. We had A1 ready for capture but could not get anyone to bring troops.

I tried about 4 times Randy and so did others. These stalemates happen more often then not and always did, and always will. We faced a determined enemy and just had a big slugfest. I flew fighter support, flew bombers to keep hangers/town, and most of all spawn hangar at next base down, ran supps, did everything but mop the floor. The defense was very good and they resupplied every chance they got.
A1 was no failure. It was a big gun fight like we used to have and no matter what you were doing you were going to fight. AND it lasted for hours. Yeah it would have been nice to grab, and we came close, but It was old time fun. No failures at A1 last night.

Only problem with this is you pretty much admitted you bomb and bail...I personally when doing attack runs(190F8 is probably my favortie plane in game) like to RTB...a lot of times ack gets me or what not but when I can I like to RTB for immersion into the game. When hitting a base I will knock out troops at adjacent fields, but by the time I have done that, RTBed, Flew over to drop town, its already coming back up. Some would say that you should attack the M3s but most know how easy it is to kill 12 M3s in 1 sortie with PB1 rockets from and F8....thats not a fight. And here is where we have disagrrement, I dont think that you can always find a fight in AH...because certain game mechanics allow people more interested in keeping fields then fighting over them to avoid combat with others....Man guns, M3 town resupply ect ect

LOLz Oboe :rofl

If Falcon23 were here, he'd get some missions running and get this going again!

Rooks qualify for a Jerry Lewis style Telethon. Rooks = Jerry's kids.
-
In the F8 you can kill acks at 10k+ alt agl with rockets. 2 SAP bombs and VH should be toast. Do not bring more fuel than you need to loiter max 5-8 minutes over target.

I believe you are wrong there.
I believe you are right, believing he is wrong

It is cool - but I can't take credit for any of those images - all found through searches. The Raven ("Rook" in English terms, I understand) grabbing the Knight is some gang-related graphic a real artist did for Assassin's Creed, IIRC.

I think that anything which promotes a fight like this is a great thing for the game. Guys are looking past the "fun" of the game for a strategic objective which really doesn't mean anything other than a new map.
The fun is the thrill of the attack or the stalwart defense...the interaction with fellow players to achieve a goal while fighting the enemy which is trying to deny you that goal. A fight which lasts for hours is a great thing in my opinion. When the game degrades from interacting with fellow players to avoiding the fight to refusing to fly and just manning guns.....its time is limited as people vote with their feet.
For the solo minded guys, the ability to influence the fight by hitting strats is still there.....you can always hit fields but usually without support you are not going to solo it....which is a good thing.
One side serious outnumbered is never fun....I see the numbers ebb and flow depending on time. Especially for the rooks.

From my recent experience, I have yet to experience much grief for switching countries. Then again I am not to terribly concerned with winning the war.
Oh its there! They real problem comes into effect when several members of your squad are on, and someone had swapped a couple hours earlier. So 3 on one country and 1 on another, for an hour or 2. Even when the odd guy out isnt fighting on same side of the map. Most players will simply ask " why is such and such on the Pick One country". So a simple explanation and all is well. Its the few(alot fewer than in AH2) dont ask and just start in with the accusations. Its water on a ducks back to most of us, but some folk can get a bit worked up over it.

people still think there's a difference between rooks, bishops, and knights? thats like thinking the rules of monopoly will change according to what piece you choose to play with.... i havent played in a long time, but i know for sure that the only difference between the teams is literally just different phonic assignments and different chess piece symbols to go with. it is fun tho to watch someone who actually believes "THE BISH ARE BAD!!!" go off on a completely irrational and unfounded tirade about how only the players on this certain country are the ones responsible for any and all things he/she deems a detriment to gameplay. and i always get a kick out of how totally unwilling these players are to listen to any sort of logical thought on the matter. or is it me that's got it twisted? maybe the bish really are the root of all that sucks!! hmmm. when/if i come back, im definitely NOT going to be flying bish!! that country is populated exclusively with players who exist only to pee on my parade. avoid those bish everyone.... something about being assigned that symbol brings out the Richard Cranium in anyone who flies under it! :aok

yeah, it is pretty stupid when you step back and look at it.
But these are the players left. Ones that dont worry about the fight, and worry about the map.
It hits home for them I guess... :rofl
Ill continue to swap countries to find a fight, they cant ruin my attempt to find fun.
