I feel I'm watching the decline of Warbirds all over again. As the numbers reduce, there remains a player base that contains a few very venomous and toxic players. In the environment the game exists in at present, we need every new player we can get. The game needs an environment that will let the new players learn and adapt. I would suggest a few changes that would provide this kind of environment, and could be placed into the game in a test series as the last RADAR tests were done.
For the Main arena, I suggest the following changes
1. Remove the channel 200 option, (same country communication only, and no PM).
2. Remove the message that tells you who killed you, or who you killed. All kills and deaths are anonymous, (include the scoring system).
3. Remove aircraft identification icons until 500 feet of distance, just range displayed until that, with the distance for range set to the same distance as now in the main.
4. Make the RADAR icons dots, with no other information.
Two ideas I think may generate funding
1. Make the skins of aircraft be linked to different airfields.
2. Allow players to purchase custom skins linked to them and flyable from any base for a recurring cost.
Create a fur ball arena with the following characteristics
1. All seeing RADAR of all vehicles, air, land, or sea.
2. Any kill is seen by all players, who died, and who was the killer.
3. Air starts for a limited portion of the arena.
4. Channel 200, PM's, and country channels.
I think this would give the fur balling crowd a good option, and people that want to play a more tactics based game more opportunity. This would also give an arena that would allow people to play the game without the chest thumping, and hurt ego complaining. Just a few thoughts on how to create a gaming environment that would keep newer players.

:aok Have said some of this myself. Seen toxicity run off 2 players I brought in...that being said...I know whats coming...just wanted to say "I agree" before the storm comes in :rock
-
I agree that the arenas has become far more toxic than it was in the old "heyday". I dont think spitting the community is an answer tho.
I like the idea of no cross country communication, but if HTC doesnt add software to shut down third party coms you are never going to have it. I do believe it would build comradary on a team as those would be the only ones youd be talking to, but as I said it wont work.
I think the "open sand box" concept has been taken to far. In the old days most players still had some respect for others and it showed in how everyone treated each out. These days after years of "internet anonymity" there is very little respect given anyone online, and in many case face to face. Society has changed but the "open sand box" concept hasnt. If players cant keep themselves in line, there should be somone there ALWAYS to step in before things get out of hand.

I think he means compulsory non-country coms. There's nothing like some jackwagon cussing you out on direct vox or via PM for shooting him down.

People are losing their patience as well as being somewhat stressed out by the perceived decline of our great game. This is expressed the wrong way out of frustration. We saw this before Steam came online. The bump in numbers calmed it down but now some of it is back.
-
I think a lot of it comes from the smaller numbers. It’s a lot easier to get a hate on for a guy when he’s killing you over and over instead of getting killed by a vast assortment of people.
That having been said it’s pretty easy to not be a dick to people.

Also these are bad ideas in general, even if they were somehow relevant to your main point.

I think the majority of players are civil, with just a few getting more interesting late at night, or deeper into a bottle. I'd have to agree with Fugi, this is a society issue with the anonymity afforded by the net. I think the no 200, and no idea who you killed or were killed by would go a long way. Obviously it would have to go into the scoring and the films. But it's just an idea on how to reduce the chest thumping and ego bruising.

;) Just a couple thoughts Devil for revenue generation, they are not on the main topic, but I wanted to throw them out there.

Compared to what?
I see this complaint in every mmo I've played, especially pvp. And AH is the most well mannered online community I've experienced, even less toxic than AW was, so I have to wonder what the poster's basis of comparison is if he finds the AH online enviornment toxic.

If a tavern or restaurant owner lets his friends cuss and carry on in an unpolite manor and insult other customers, If the security harasses the customers and allows His or Her buddies to do the same, Sooner or later all you have is Them for customers. I see a fair amount of youngsters start to play and don't last long although They were pretty good and liked It. I would venture more than a few of their parents did not approve of the chat, language or behavior of some of the adults. The insults, name calling sexual content and vulgar behavior. "Most players don't want to know how much puss the doctor drained out of your leg". More effective and less biased moderation might be a good start.
-
Floob I think with regard to Fugitive's observation most all MMO's are toxic, but I'm talking about creating one arena that would try to sidestep the normal toxicity. If it lost some of the toxicity, there would likely be more players. I play the game for the enjoyment of it, and find the toxicity taxing. I play without 200 on most of the time, for that reason. But if the kills and killers were anonymous, and you could only talk to one side, it would add to the game in my opinion.

Yes. Players typing in all CAPS should be muted. It's terribly rude. Impolite.

Guess I'm not playing at the toxic times. (Though I turned off ch200 on day one.) Have gotten maybe 3 or 4 nasty PMs, but I just reply with "<S>" and that's the end of it.
Is ch200 on by default for new players?
Also, I like knowing who my kills and killers are so I can offer a salute after a good fight.
YMMV.
:salute
-
No, ch200 is not on by default, a player has to make their own decision to tune to it
Hope this helps

Someones feelings got hurt so we should change the entire game? Squelch, report, and or detune. Ch200 builds community, there is only one or two people really guilty of what your saying.
Deal with them appropriately as mentioned above.
-
A player has to go out of their way to tune into 200 that makes it voluntary plus the squelching is a plus.. personally I like knowing who killed me or I killed.. and the playful banter I enjoy and any abuse can be squelched and reported ... I want some freedom that can't be changed by childish behavior

Its a bit more complicated than that. In regards to the situation I ran into, it was with my Ex-Wifes youngest son. He was absolutely loving this game, plus it helped me spend some more time with him...he is in Alabama/me Tennessee. Odd situation, I know, but if I didnt try to mentor him...noone else would. Was sad, really...even took him to family farm in WV to deer hunt...bastage killed the Biggest Buck I ever saw FIRST TIME-First day :furious Back on point. He was pretty damn good too..it was like it was natural for him. Problem was, he killed 2 of THE WRONG FOLK to shoot down. It wasnt so much that his feelings got hurt..it was more along...why should I play this game? I get enough brow beating, put downs and abuse at MY HOUSE...dont need more thank you very much. Did it scar him for life no...did he handle it properly? I THINK SO..he just walked away, instead of getting on their level. Guess I did SOMETHING RIGHT. I was proud of him..but it hurt me more than I let him know. THAT sort of CRAP...shouldnt happen...we should ALL be better than that :uhoh
-
The only way to fix this current problem is to bring back corporal punishment...
This time out white does not work!!!!
:D :rofl :rofl :rofl
Joking ..not joking
-
What do skins have to do with player toxicity?
Everything. With sufficiently thick player skin, toxicity doesn't matter.

All great information COMPLETELY unknown by new players.

I dont think it has anything to do with "feelings" getting hurt. I think its more along the line of some players antic just sucking the fun out of the game. There are players I squelch as soon as I see their name pass by on the text buffer because I just dont want to be bothered by their antics. New players dont have that ability because they dont know how. Report did someone say? Sure, most people are raised not to squeal on people so I doubt that is an avenue many use.
Its great we have these options available to use, but that is just masking the problem. Basically what they are saying is "go ahead and be an a ss, if someone is bothered by it THEN we will take care of it." Why not take care of it at the source and maybe not lose so many new players that dont know or are afraid to report the instances. We lost 1stpar3's buddy, how many others?

Correlation is not causality. In this case, it may be, but more likely the other way around. Without politics and religion on channel 1 (or 200) and without insults between players - isn't it totally boring? Isn't it so boring that there's no reason to stay?
Bring back an non-moderated channel 1!

I want to clarify why I think we need the unattributed arena. There exists a fair amount of the population that wants the fight against other people, and the tactical leaning of a WWII game, but not the nastiness of some of the players. I don't always play the game for social interaction, but some do. That's why I also suggested the fur ball arena for when you feel like trash talk, and harassing one another. <<S>>

To move on we need to admit our toxicity and come to terms with it. Even by responsing to this thread I am a bit toxic.
What happened to the raw enthusiasm that we players used to have? Why was it replaced by cynisicm?

:furious Hello everyone! I've been listening to the garbage people are gripping about on 200. Do you not think that a new person reading that garbage is affected. The reason numbers may be down is probably because you scare them off. Kind of a self fulfilling prophecy. I have come to the conclusion that 200 should go because the jerks think their opinions matter. They need to shut up and just play the game. I've played this game for a lot of years and really enjoy it, so shut up and play!

Simple solution: Untune ch 200.

200 is not the default setting therefore if said new person has tuned into 200 A. I don't consider them new B. They must want to crosstalk and as far as far as abusive behavior.. squelch and report plus moderators..idk short of having an age restriction on 200 or disclaimer I think the 200 community is half the reason I even log in

Not all of us have that experience with toxic players.
I talk on vox or pm players in other countries all the time. We have fun conversations and
talk about all kinds of topics. I even invite players from other countries to join our small group on vox.
Chatting with players you are fighting really is allot of fun. We laugh allot and learn from our opponents as well.
The so called toxic players can be squelched for text or range by right clicking on their callsign in the roster.
It is easy to de-tune channel 200 and avoid toxic players if you wish to get rid of all them in one easy click of the mouse.
I don't always squelch for being toxic, but if a player talks allot and I need to hear a gv engine start up..
...the talkative player gets squelched......even though I like that player. I know many gv'ers that do that. It was not my original idea.
Players do not know they have been squelched so they do not get offended.
My two cents.

I'm not a huge fan of modding people beyond the usual hate speech stuff, I much prefer giving the players the tools to filter the people they don't want to listen to. You have to go looking for 200, and while there seems to be an awful lot of griping on it lately it can still allow for chatting with the people on the other countries.
It's online gaming. There will be trolls/maladjusted a-holes/people you don't want to interact with.

I'll make it simple 200 is an option just like this forum the same complaints and crosstalk that happens here happens on 200 .. the only difference is at least on 200 they are coming from a larger percentage of contributing players if you can handle it here 200 shouldn't ruffle any feathers

Next people will be asking for hitech to remove the blood splatter from inside the cockpit on a PW cause it upsets them and it's too violent

Ch 200 isnt the MOST troubling as TOXICITY goes. The issue WITH DE-TUNING 200 is the PM's. 200 is rare, that you will get the outright HATRED SPEWED. I like the back and forth on 200 just as much as the next guy. The issues that I have brought up about TOXICITY wasnt on NORMAL channels. How many times do you see on CH200..."put it on 200...QUIT PMing ME....". THAT DONT HELP EITHER :uhoh If typing in all CAPS gets under your skin..can you not see how toxic actually SPELLING OUT attacks will hurt? :uhoh

On nits I don't see much arguing on country. On 200 it feels like 90% of what I see is some variant of "Nice HO" or "I died outnumbered. You should feel bad." Occasionally they combine it into "I was outnumbered and you HOed. You should feel bad."
I find generally if you're getting hit with rage PMs from one of the usual suspects, you did something good.

Yes. Because it is completely impossible for squaddies to play on opposite sides without sharing information. That statement says a lot more about you than it does them.

I like cross country chat... think of what Olds did in vietnam...I also like knowing who killed me and who I killed... I got great satisfaction from bombing DR7 and also didnt feel so stupid when 999000 got credit for turning my beautiful P47M into a flaming wreckage falling to the ground.
Its a war game... not runescape... skins must be thick... In 15 years I have reported 1, exactly 1 player... and it was because he was saying horrible things about another player.
Thats my $0.02 worth... and its overpriced.

For the Main arena, I suggest the following changes
1. Remove the channel 200 option, (same country communication only, and no PM).
:aok

Me, for one. Not that I have a thin skin, I really don't care what you think of me or how I play a game. I never tuned to 200 because it seemed like it was full of morons spouting off about political propaganda that I really don't care about. It's when the PMs become harassment that you start to wonder why the powers that be allow that in their game. And more to the point, why pay for it? You wanna allow trolls? Fine. Don't whine about it when the player base disintegrates.

What your doing is I think, is commonly referred to as spying.
That is because you have no idea what they are doing. The 80th will get on opposing sides to fight each other sometimes.

When you getting back in the air Shuff? Been missing your "harassing" 38, and your quick wit. :D

New player was saying the game is no fun because every time he spawned on the runway there was a horde of vultchers at the field. Explained how to check the radar and use F3 to look around before launching and how to move to another field.
Wonder how many new players have the same experience. Maybe the "spawn at the busiest field" might not be the best way to introduce the game. :O

I mentioned this when it was implemented.

While players have gotten more toxic both in the game and in the forum I don't think thats near as bad as they have gotten less welcoming to noobs. Its been one year exactly since I left and the K/Ds for Jul 2018 is actually 1,000 less then 2017 so theres been no progress, and Jul 2017 was so boring I'd usually take off once and bail because it just wasn't worth my time. So here is what happened to ////aces High written by someone who isn't even going to read your responses.
Right about the time of WW1 was the beginning of the end. Players stopped supporting, training, welcoming noobs and instead settled into their familiar groups and really didn't want new people in them.
The introduction of WW1 planes that nobody wanted to fly, even tho they said they did, "I warned you", coincided with the introduction of even more ground vehicles that took players out of the air, putting them on the ground where they could chat with their familiar friends while lobbing tank shells from miles away. As well to much time was spent building early war planes, again that nobody wanted to fly, because they were slow and underarmed. As a purist I understood the desire full a full Historical set but the statistics confirm what I say is true and eventually killed off the EWA's and kept WW1 a ghost town. The stats also confirm nobody wants to fly the early war planes now either.
So more wasted energy and resources were also spent remodeling planes nobody wants to fly. More time too. As numbers dwindled the big maps made a game that was beginning to become boring and unwelcoming even more boring and unwelcoming. In the end who cares if a plane that gets 200 to 300 K/Ds a month gets remodeled?
But the biggest mistake was allowing the game to go stale and boring while sticking strictly to Historical accuracy in plane sets. Add the lousy big maps to the dwindling numbers and you get a game in a death spin that can't recover. Was a Battleship that important? Or an i-16, Brewster, fi-156, PT boat, Jagdpanthers, 87-G2, SD-251, new KI-67, Mossie bomber, Sea Hurry, Betty Bomber, WW1 planes...ect worth it? The stats answer that question.
You should have created a 1946 arena instead and stretched History some. The planes existed, either in fact or in design, and their performance specs could have been recreated, or at least close enough. So on the bright side you do have a Historically accurate game. On the bad side you have a Historically accurate game that people don't want to pay a monthly for because its no fun. Noobs are meat for existing players because there are no new players for them to compete against. The old crowd likes having noobs to kill but don't want to hang around with them.
But more then anything the game is very, very, very boring. Hell even a Korea arena with just a limited intro of new planes, along with the advanced late war ones, would have been a far better move then the decisions made.

I have not received any rage pm's in a long time. I must be doing something wrong. :D :D :D
Me either, bout the only one recently would be GT101 - and personally I fan the flames knowing the guys veins are about to burst.

I would bring back Mid-War at least and maybe Early war. These were the perfect place for noobs to start out at, low numbers, good plane set...... :joystick:

-1 on your comment
You seem to have outgrown the game in your old age...its not your fault by no means but...blaming the downturn of the game on the WWI arena and other "new" content is lame...
People like you leave bad reviews and turn more people away...

with the low numbers comes a closer sense of fighting. like fess said its aggravating to get killed over and over by the same person, but with low numbers that happens.
I am still waiting on a explanation of why a two sided war will not work. I have asked in many threads and still not real answer other than that is what dale wants and he tried it back in 1964 and it didn't work. all I see now is either you are in the horde (boring) you are getting horded (frustrating) or you are left to twiddle your thumbs taking undefended bases (boring). the eny subscription does not really work in so many levels with a three country for the fact if you are being horded but you have a 25 eny you are pretty powerless to change the tide. also not a lot can change this but the fact there are very few left in this game that when encountered by another plane they will fight. it usually turns in to a race to friends then the runner becomes a fighting competitor.

I played in WarBirds for years. When they opened up the Armored Assault arena it catered to a smaller crowd and only had two countries.
I often had to fight against up to 10 to 1 odds because players in a certain squad ( I will not mention by name ) would not change countries
to balance the sides. In time I got better and took them on and did fairly well using stealth, surprise, and good aim from lots and lots of practice offline.
In the case of Aces High, three sides is a the better road for a combat sim. If you are getting horded by one country and cannot compete, then you re-spawn from another base or attack the other country. The 3 sides have fairly similar terrains and are balanced almost perfectly by their terrain builder. A 2 country sim could require all of the maps to be redone. That is not cost effective. I anticipate AH numbers will come back up. Allot of $$$ has been invested to upgrade to AH3. Many players are going back to the PC for internet gaming. AH will come back.

my personal favorite is the person freaking out because his country isn't playing part of his master war plan.

Armored Assault vs. Main. Different animals. Warbirds rarely had side balance issues. Certainly not to the extent we do.
The other day we had 18 Bishops fighting 17 Rooks while four Knights twiddled thumbs. Can't tell you how many players logged in said nah and left. Had they stayed and not been forced to be stuck on a side they might have stayed. Two sides they certainly would have.
