The performance of our "devices" far outweighs the danger of lithium batteries. Want to go back to the days when a cell phone battery lasted 2 hours?
Everyone puts their own price on their life.
Some years back a teen stole a lawn chair from a home and died for it. No charges. The home had been robbed many times before. It was dark and the teen had something in his hands. He was on private property. He thought it was worth his life to get that chair.
Small batteries you can put them in a safe area. Large batteries get a little harder to section off.

More likely, he didn't know that theft of a lawn chair was a capital offense.

At night it's a lot harder to know what evil lurks in the hearts of men. Texas makes allowances for this.

That depends on the device. Cell phone, ok doesn't see that much abuse. EV that can see everything mother nature has instore + road abuse? ummm, no thanks.

So far the resale value of EV's has been pretty dismal. I tend to agree with a you tube mechanic who says the full EV's with the battery box under the car is going to be very susceptible to corrosion in a Nothern climate where salt is common on the road. Once the battery box is compromised the individual cells in the battery are likely to go bad fairly quickly probably leading to a fire. I am not interested at all in having any EV be it a scooter or car, in or near my garage.

I just read the other day that well over half the current EV owners say they will not buy another EV. Their next vehicle will be gas. It went on to give the reasons they had.

A friend has a EV they are proud of,…even after they told me they went from Chitcago to west coast…having to stop every 2.5- 3.5 hrs to change ge for an hr b fore hitting the road again. IF you could find a charging station. Any e who diesn't know ,.. its a 3-4 day trip on 8-10 hrs of driving. That means they were robbed of 3 hrs per day on turning wheels, which ensured a 4 day trip.
After all that they still. Claim its a great buy. <blank stare> Some people are just too proud to admit a bad udea.
Around town, ok, cross country, not so much
Not ready for prime time.
Days of s Pinto I drove a 68 Camaro with Mickey jacked up and Thompson 60s and Craigers Mags and side pipes.

Agreed on the not ready for the masses. If someone lives in the suburbs and has a relatively short drive to work. Not a bad option as you can charge at home. City dwellers that live in apartments or condominiums? Where do you charge it at the end of the day?

The uncontrollable battery fires will make for very nice highway interludes as the odds for pile ups involving one increase with more on the road...

People I know in the city had a charging station installed in the garage, if they could. We haven’t even touched the electrical grid in this convo. We have to do SOMETHING about pollution, this just isn’t ready yet. We are still in prototype phase.
Perpetual engine? Wet dream.

There is no free lunch. The environmental havoc from producing the batteries alone is scary.

The disposal of the batteries once past service date... what's that going to cost the consumer? It's easy to recycle an internal combustion engine.

EVs are just a fad. I think it's just a proof of concept thing. It kinda works. Fine is you have REALLY short commutes. Long trips are right out for the reasons stated above. Hydrogen fuel will be the answer to all of this. There are multiple projects underway trying to figure out how to separate, store and distribute the most abundant element in the universe safely and cheaply. Refueling a car will take a few minutes as it does with gasoline. It doesn't pollute and is endlessly renewable. It also conveniently burns! Can use it to fuel our cars and trucks. No reason to re-invent the combustion engine. That's already proven that works. Can heat our homes with it too. The best part, since it's all around us, no one will be beholden to any group or country to get it. Just need to crack the code of making it. Big project happening now on this at the university I work at. Hydrogen just has to be it.

This plus having the house of Saud and the Emirs to the east take a bloody nose and kick to the onions would be nice.

It's claimed that hybrid's average 40% better fuel economy that their gas only counterparts. (not my research- internet claim). So why the panic to go all electric when hybrids seem like a good start to saving gas and reducing carbon emissions?

This is exactly correct.

This is how every hybrid should sound :)
Another cool thing about hybrids is you don't need an alternator or a starter motor anymore. Take off on electric power and dump the clutch to get the engine running, and the Motor Generator unit inside the transmission also doubles as an alternator.
the 60 hp of hybrid assist roughly equates to a 20% fuel savings and thus less pit stops which can make a huge difference in a 24 hour race like Lemans.

Might work in the small towns/countries of England and Europe but not here imo

Although wife wife has a cell, I refuse to carry one! Over the course of 33-35 yrs, I was on call 24/7 and in order carried a beeper, then a pager, then a laptop and then an early smart phone (a treo). This included vacations and holidays. I don't want to have ANYBODY to be able to get hold of me unless I want to talk to them and screen even the calls on my land line! :noid Ram

I have one. Don't know the number. Confident it's not charged. I could charge it, if I could find it.

My cell phone holds a charge a long time. I'm rarely on it. I spend more time texting the grandkids than anything else and also refuse to answer it unless I know the number and who is calling. IMO if the call is important they will leave a message. If it is a robo or sales call that left a message, then I block the number of who called.

Scca’s GT pinto class often raced with the GT-3 racers. At turn 9 at summit point on the first lap, it was porsche, mazda, bmw cars in the top 10 places.
They came by on lap three and an aggressive pack of pintos who started at the rear was quickly working their way through to the front.
Sure they came with firestone 500s and a suspect fuel tank.

Ford fixed the pinto issues by simply putting a rubber connector on the fuel tank filler pipe. Before the fix it would shear off and cause a fire.
Not all ev’s and hybrids use lithium battery’s,Toyota uses a nickel- metal-hydrate battery as does Lexus. I opted for a non-hybrid RX as it uses regular gas and not premium as is required in the hybrid. Plus the hybrid was 10k over MSRP and had a 6 month wait time. They do offer a plugin hybrid version now but again the payback difference is too much and would take me about 20 years to break even.
