Forget Sharpton, Jackson, and the rest of the fringe. I'm talking about mainstream Democrats, both voters and politicians. People I know well, including members of my family. Bush could run with Jesus Christ and these people would still hate him.
See ... among the people I know (mostly folks in California and New England) a lot of the gripe is stuff that Cheney is wrapped up in. A lot of the people I know don't think W is really well qualified to be president, but all pretty much agree he does mean well and is basically a good person (which isn't something easy to say about a politician).
Regardless of the way these parts of the country are portrayed, and the way they usually vote, there are a lot of independant voters who don't really vote along party lines. For instance, Bill Weld was a very popular governor in Mass. - he's a Republican. Arnie is gov. in California - Arnie is very Republican, but Cali votes Dem recently. It really is more issue-based than you think among independants.
