Yikes you need some privacy laws down there. I can't believe they are allowed to track users net visits.

What you do on company equipment & company time pretty much waives any privacy you thought you had. I kept tabs on the web logs here for a few days. After realising car salesmen do nothing but look at porn all day, I brought up my concern about a customer's children seeing pr0n popups on a salesman's machine & the potential for lawsuits to the GM.

A week later I got to build up a content filtering server. Now only managers can see anything except for required business sites. Kinda screwed me though. Now there's much less billable IT hours due to the lack of spyware crashed machines.

I would find it very hard to serve my customers if I wouldn't have a full internet access(I'm a service advisor). What's the likely hood of a customers, let alone their children watching the computer of a car salesman? At least in my company they have private offices and the customers sit on the opposite side of the desk. Sounds like a BS reason to bully your employees.

This is what's always puzzled me about americans. They constantly emphasize freedom - yet they continuously seek ways to limit it.

No bad words, no pron, no privacy.. That doesn't sound free at all to me.

Off the top of my head, the service advisors have Toyota's info system, distributor site, toyota university, & a few other things. I asked them for a reason they'd need google, and the best they could give me was to find new backgrounds =P Parts has a few more sites available, like PartsVoice & Octane.

There's publicly accessible PC's in several kiosks that employees were looking at porn on, and only F&I & the GM have private offices. Everybody else is at a little island desk where everybody in the world can see their monitors. The new store they built is even worse. Their island partitions aren't even head height (while sitting!).

I wasn't out to bully anybody really. I picked up a project out of curiosity, got approval, and built a system so effective it dropped by computer repair bills by 75%. No feeling quite like kicking your own prettythang.

You have freedom & privacy, on your own time. Once somebody is giving you money for your time, you are obligated to do what they ask, and follow their rules. Their rules are designed to protect them from our own lawsuit happy society. Kinda sucks, but that's just the way it is here.

Well for me there hasn't been a single day I wouldn't have needed google. I know that the typical guy behind the desk doesn't need  it because he doesn't know how to use it. You'd be amazed what kind of things people ask you and usually the best way for seeking that information is the internet.

It's funny that we have a few mechs who seem to spend most of their time looking at porn, yet these guys have some of the best sales. Me theory is that a worker is going to use a certain amount his hours on something non-productive. Taking their intardnet away solves nothing.

If his boss was out for him anyway it really doesn't matter. This was just the most convenient excuse.

Speaking from personal experience it may not have even been his boss that was after him but someone even farther up the line putting pressure on him.

I know at a place I worked word came down to me "unofficially" of course but in no uncertain terms that I was to "find a way to get rid" of one of the guys in my crew.

Now this guy I was supposed to get rid of was a jerk to put it mildly and I didn't much care for him anyway but I had a couple of other problems.
First and foremost was the person this word originated from was ten times the A-hole of the person I was supposed to be getting rid of. Which left me less then enthusiastic about what she wanted and how she wanted me to go about it.
Secondly. Even though I didn't particularly like him or his attitude he did his job and wasn't doing anything I could legally use to get rid of him on. On top of that he had just had a kid with some medical problems and was up to his eyeballs in troubles already. And while I didn't like him I also didn't like the idea of hurting his wife and kid just to please the self righteous little C***
So what I did was let word get to him 3rd hand that upper administration wanted him gone. And stuck him with every crappy out of the way job I had in my files. Two reasons. ! to get that point across he wasn't welcome and get him out of view (out of sight out of mind) of this person who wanted him out to take some heat off of me and give him a chance to get out on his own.
When he eventually came to me with what he had learned I simply denied it and said "Well you know how this place works. You need to do what is best for you"

Time passed more and more heat came down on me because he was still there I was repeatedly asked "So in so wants to know why Brian is still here"
I could only respond. "I dont have a valid or legal reason to get rid of him"
To which I was told to "be creative" (make something up).
I could only respond that I wasn't going to open myself up for and be this VPs patsy for any legal action that this guy could and probably would take and that if She wanted him gone that bad to make something up then she should be either willing to put those instructions to me in writing or be willing to do it themselves and put their own arses on the line. But I wasn't going to be anyone's convenient scapegoat.
If not then let me handle it my own way.and he would eventually leave on his own and all our butts will be covered.

Eventually thats what happened but my refusal to make something up just to get rid of a guy I didnt like but who did his job didnt please this VP.
So next the heat and the little games started coming down on me. Now keep in mind until all this happened everything was just hunky dory with myself and the uppermost echelon.  My men always finished out projects not only on time well ahead of schedule no matter what kind of monkey wrenches were thrown into the system.
they were always willing to come in early and stay late if thats what was needed (something I understand they no longer are willing to do under their current boss)
It wasn't until this that things went afoul.
So after 11 years I split the whole scene out of disgust and went into business for myself vowing to be willing to stand in line at a soup kitchen before I ever return to the corporate world again unless I have absolute power over the people under me and only answer to the topmost person.

Best move I ever made. Less security for sure. But any headaches I have are my headaches and not some unqualified inferior superior above me. and my current headache lasts only until me next customer, the next job.

But as I was saying in the beginning.
This was just a convenient excuse to get rid of Airhead.
If they were after him it was only a matter of when and how.
And it may not only have just be comming form his boss. but might be the result of someone up higher applying pressure.

We do have freedom. that is why I have argued myself with Airhead about the boards.

Your board. you allow what you allow and set your own standards.

NetAces and This Board have their own set standards.
Their boards. their standards.

Neither you, myself. or anyone else has the "freedom" to just post whatever we like.
If anyone wants that kind of freedom then get their own board and they are free to can run it the way they like.

At work, your supposed to be at WORK.
Work equipment is owned by your employer and he/she/they may regulate its use in anyway they like reguardless of its during work hours, linch break, coffee break or after you have punched out for the day.
Its still their equipment. The fact they may let you use it for your own purposes is a matter of their generousity and not your right. Therefore you should at least abide by their rules with reguards to their equipment.
and while your using their equipment I dont think you should have a reasonable expectation of privacy.
I beleive an employer should have the full right to know exactly what their equipment is being used for
Their equipment their rules.
It is after all. THEIR equipment

If you let somebody use something thats yours. Dont you think you should at least have some say in what its being used for?

With your own equipment you are free to do and look at whatever you like that is available for viewing.

I've never had a job that allowed me to cruise the internet or visit sites that were not specifically work related. I guess my boss always figured if I was on company time I was supposed to be on company business.

If Airhead lost his job I'm sorry, trully as it's not pleasant losing your job.

It's not up to everyone on the BBS to make sure there is no work sensitive content on the BBS however. If you're at work then work, cruise the net on your time.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

I've just received a nasty email from Airhead.

Apparently he is very upset not only by losing his job but also my repeated calling of him 'raymond' and my 'flippiant tone' about Not Work Safe material.

After his email I have had time to reflect upon what he wrote and his circumstances and I will have to reverse myself.

I was insensitive to him and his situation.  I wasn't aware that his boss was out to get him, his wife positioned to leave him taking everything he owned, and his...ummm, I'm not sure I should say this, but his 'condition'.  Again, I'm not sure I should say anything but he has some phsyical problems... I'll leave it at that.

I'm sorry Airhead.  As I said before, I was extremely and grossly insensitive to you and your position.  Although I offer my apologizes in good faith I now that you will probably dismiss them out of hand.  I accept that.  I didn't know how the circumstances that you were dealing with.
