Sandman.

1. couldn't think of a better thing to spend billions on
2. Too easy, yes. That's okay though, because we have them here anyway and we are not going to deport them anyway
3. I agree, deport the first time. 2nd time, tent city in the desert.
4. I see your point. Still, have it on the books and enforce it when able
5. yes.
6. Yeah, nit-picker you! Normal public school language programs can be taught as a second language. Second to English. English should be manditory for all public schools and all government business.

OK..you go first :)

To get 100 million into something like this you have to have leaders, they would go down in flames fast.

Can you imagine the perp walks on the news every night, film at eleven of all the poor women and kids dragged out of their homes because Dad was a tax protester?

I can tell you have not seen how vicious the government can be when you mess with "their" cash.

By ignoring the employers you ensure this problem will never, ever, end and only get worse.

sandie... at best the cost is a wash but most agree that the cost of having illegals here is huge and a defficet and.... it is getting worse.

But let's say it is a wash...   You don't condone slavery for economic reasons.   The reason hireing illegals is against the law is because it is immoral.

It is also dragging down the country and.... promoting a general disrespect for the law.   that is all fine if that is the kind of country you want to live in...

As for the economic aspect... you could have guest workers... they would have documentation.   Best of both worlds.

I do find it amusing that you sandie, in order to save a buck on having your lawn mowed...  are willing to see hundreds or thousands of men women and children die every year trying to get into this country illegaly and..  to support what is in effect a slave trade and support some of the worst criminals in existence.

If your arguement is that it got bad over time and needs to be fixed over time.... that is OK...  simply start jailing the employers... it would take a year or two to scare the traitors into submission but being the cowardly scum bags that they are...  it would work.

No solution that does not involve the active and agressive capture and prosecution and jailing of employers will have any chance of working..

You could also say that any employer caught knowingly hireing illegals loses his chance to hire legal guest workers in the future.

I expect the growing illegal immigration problem to be a major issue in the '08 election. If we can get someone elected who promises immigration reform we just might see some changes. If not, we better work on our spanish.

In other words, "We don't understand the problem, so let's just quit."

How about taking the time and effort to understand the problem before leaping towards a solution? How's that sound?

You guys are being played. You're being played by the protestors, the media, and the politicians and you're going to jump head first into a emotional decision.

Don't be surprised when the results aren't at all satisfying.

I think I understand the problem quite well. The neighborhood in which I spent a fair amount of my youth now looks like Mexico. Everything is rundown and all shops have signs in Spanish. Of course the real problem is the very high crime there making it a dangerous place to be.

Just over a year and a half ago my youngest son was badly injured as a passenger in an automobile accident. He has twenty titanium plates in his face and head. The bill was $180K. We lived in the hosipital with him for over two weeks. During that time I think about 80% or more of the people we saw there were hispanic. I'm betting most them weren't paying customers. How much of my bill was paying for their care?

The problem is obvious to most of us. The irritant is that we have laws to protect us from this illegal immigration which are not being enforced. We want and need leaders who will ensure that our laws are taken seriously and enforced.

sandie you make no sense....  It would appear to me that federal government not enforceing the hiring of illegals laws is us "being played"

I had the impression that you are being played by the lefties who want to add more and more needy socialist democrat lovers to their roles of voters.  Seems that democrat politicians have no more love for America than employers who are breaking the laws.

It is you who are being played at this point... the rest of us have been hiding our heads in the sand but the problem has gotten too big to hide from.

enforcing the law on the choke point (the scum bag employer) is the best solution.

Ah.. so the problem "needs more study".

Perhaps we should appoint a committee; as a rule they are highly effective in studying the problem. We could give them a few tens of millions of dollars and 5 or 10 years to work through this complex issue.

THEN we might "understand" the problem or, things may have changed so we'll have to have another study.

Or maybe the problem is pretty simple. Employers employing illegals are felons.

I know it's hard to understand the concept of enforcing that law but maybe we could give it a try while all the studying is going on.

Or maybe there is no right and wrong anymore. Maybe it all just "depends".

You guys just don't get it. Forget about the sociological and morality or immorality issues of capitalism at work.

My sense of caution is purely economical.

Lasz you've admitted as much. You don't know the cost of the problem. I'm certain that no one knows the cost of the solution either.

So... dive right in. Legislate away.

I'm just going to sit back and wait for the unintended consequences and the inevitable finger pointing. I'll be sure to say, "I told you so."

There isn't any need to legislate anything further at all. The laws are already on the books.

Actually, you're just sitting back and doing nothing. Great solution.

Maybe if we ignore it, it'll just go away.
