Well, im not sure why, but ive recently had the sudden desire to learn an American plane, and again, im not sure why, but I really want to learn the jug. Ive read the evaluation pages about it, and watched some old War Department training films on it, but I cannot seem to get anything going. My model of choice is the P-47 D-11, followed by the D-20. Is anyone here willing to spend some time in the TA teaching me how to fly this great aircraft?

So have you given up on the 109?

No, I still fly the Bf-109, but as I said I feel the sudden compulsion to learn an American aircraft. The Bf-109 G-6 is still my go-to plane. If I NEED to kill someone, or I need a bird im confident in, the Bf-109 is my choice. But I always want to broaden my horizons. The only way to really get good at this game is to know not just your own plane, but also your opponent's. So im constantly devoting a few weeks at a time at least to a new plane while still keeping time in my Messerschmitt. The 3 planes I go to most are the P-38, the P-40, and now the Jug. Spent some time in a Spitfire too, and that did WONDERS for my ACM I think. It gave me time to learn maneuvers and combat tactics rather than just struggling to keep my plane in control.

The P-38 is a great plane but still the two highest scoring American Aces in the ETO (Gabreski and Johnson) flew Jugs.  It's a fantastic plane once you know how to utilize its strongest assest, survivability in a dogfight.:aok

I'm not dismissing the fact that Bong and McGuire were also aces in the PTO with the P-38.  I wonder if the P-47 was used more extensively in the PTO, how well it would have performed?  Guppy, I wonder if you have any info on this subject?

It was used only as extensively as its limited range would allow. It was quite effective against the Japanese, who had no answer for its speed and dive ability. Like the P-40, the P-47 simply watched the air war move out beyond its range. On the other hand, the P-38s were not so limited.

Easy explanation--your midichlorian count is higher than the typical AH-er...

:aok

Either that or a desire to serve up some of John Browning's best with a 8X pain multiplier...

Any putz can get a kill with a spit or 109, La7, etc...but when ya kill somethin with a JUG, there is a sense of satisfaction which other planes just don't provide:aok  (that, and most folks see a P47 icon and think 'easy kill', and pursue said jug to the exclusion of all else, often resulting in their early demise)

Actually, that took about 5 seconds of firing. That second pic is 5 minutes later in the fight than that first.
