This is guaranteed to drive you crazy. Orbitersim. Its open source and FREE.

If you are into newtonian physics and figuring out how to get from point A to B in space with a limited amount of fuel - there is no equal for orbital mechanics.

Thanks for this one Wolf, never knew about it. Going to have fun with this one.

orbiter is a right laugh. I set out to go to the moon after breaking out of a low earth orbit with unlimited fuel checked. Everything was going fine untill slightly underestimated the stopping distance traveling at 91,250 m/s.  :o

I might decelerate in just about enough time to see the earth turn into a single white dot.

gotta watch how much Delta V u give yrself. Did you try to use the orbital transfer program on the mfd? It'll setup waypoints, tell u how much deltav u need for a transfer, etc.

i messed with the tracking systems a bit, they seem quite complicated yet a simple interface, will take me some trial and error. Re-entry is easy but landing in the correct continent not so on manual control.

Black Shark 2 is out by same guys.  They pretty much inserted Ka50 into DCS-A10 world.

Here are some screenies from BS2

SWEET! And it automatically installs the correct executable depending on your operating system...aka 32bit or 64bit.

No idea. Probably since I couldn't find 64bit.exe. Performance seems 64 bit worthy.

There is a little snaffu with installation.  You're required to installed BS1 1.0 first and than BS2 upgrade.   I suggest, uninstalling BS 1.02. Installing 1.0 (do not even turn it on).  Than BS2 update.  It will only ask for BS2 code.

Watched the Youtube clip on the Ka-50 Start up.

15 minutes just to TAKE OFF? Who in their right mind would want to play this?

http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/video/

This is my current ride since the BS2 update.  I started again in February 2012 in full sim mode.  This is total immersion, except I do, do a couple A-10C sorties every week not to forget the cold start startup and Maverick targeting.  I did not do the Warthog for 6 months and came back to Aces High.  When I went back to DCS, I forgot almost everything I learned concerning the A-10C; but it came back relatively quickly reviewing my notes.

The Black Shark I tried last year but gave up on it as the 2nd patch update had all Russian lettering in the cockpit and a Russian speaking "Betty" .  In February 2012, I added the $20 BS2 update over the other patches I had previously installed last year.  I never did do the Betas.  Black Shark 2 works fine.  Startup cold, no cheats, I am down to about 5 minutes now compared to the several hours indoctrination learning that beast.  I think the helicopter is much harder to learn than the Warthog jet.  But the Warthog's internal computer operated targeting and navigation systems are much more complex.  If guys want, they can purchase BS2 as a 1st download for about $40 and it does not require the initial downloads 32-bit sequences, the 2 patches in 32-bit and the new patch in 64-bit is how I have done it.  The English version has an English speaking "Betty" with Russian accent and the cockpit labels are in English.  The A.I. friendlies guys still speak Russian.

Youtube has tons of instructional videos and how-to.  The BS2 I can start it up, take-off, fly it, navigate rudimentary to waypoints, and I am just getting into learning the combat systems.  I can land it on the runway, but hover landings to a FARP landing pad needs work.  This sim is much harder than Microprose's Gunship back in the mid-1980s.   One real helicopter pilot came into the DCS forums, flew the sim, and commented that the Black Shark helicopter sim is as realistic as a real one.

The WWII P-51 will be out sometime this year and it will not be arcade-like as to Aces High.  It will be like the real thing.  I am looking forward to it.  Some guys are already prepping their sim-pit mods builds in anticipation.

I was wondering how many folks from Aces High also go to the DCS servers?  It looks to be a small handfull do.

Nobody is telling what the other newbie will be.  I am hoping it will be the F-18 Super Hornet.

Something was said here about Orbiter, the astrophysics exercise to practice the math, some physics teacher dreamed up.  For me, that is by far the hardest sim to learn out there.  There was a new update in 2010 or 2011.

Like I said, just one of these dadburn aircraft simulation is total immersion just like a real pilot would learn just learning one aircraft.  How the younger guys can keep all the various moves to the various aircraft, memorized is beyond me.

Buckaroo I have restarted my Black Shark learning sequences as well. I invested in a little notebook to keep beside me for both the start up sequences in BS1 and A-10C which both took me about 4 hours each to get the cold start procedures down to less than 5 minutes from kicking off the mission. I agree that its tough but I suggest you do like I am doing and start making a note book for each thing. As I get more comfortable in the training modes I start using the notebook less and less for the systems and targeting.

Still though it would be cool to hear from guys like Russian and Eagl who are active USAF pilots how similar the startup sequences are in aircraft compared to the simulations.

Hi Reschke,

Actually you are the guy that got me interested in the Black Shark last year in a message you posted to the Aces High forum.

It took me a long time to get familiar with Aces High.  I know it pretty well, now.  But currently, though a paying member, still.  I am not playing it until September when I quit DSL and get a cable ISP which will run 7 times faster!

I play in full sim mode, not game mode.  I found some CH Products profiles to modify to CH Hangar for both aircraft.

The A-10C Warthog was a very steep learning curve to where I am now and I just know the basics, still a lot to learn.  That was total immersion for 6 months last year.  I have the latest newbie, too.  Maybe 5 minutes to get airborne, but you need 10 minutes to get the weapon systems up and ready on the ingress in to the combat area.  I think the A-10C's combat ability is more difficult than the helicopter, but the helicopter is harder for me to fly it.

I actually found a 2009 copy of the Black Shark flight manual in a metal spiral bound 500 page book from Amazon.com published by Eagle Dynamics and DCS.  The online manual is great for searching for a topic item, but I prefer a book opened up in front of me.

I am a fanatic searching, asking questions, and finding useful info and then printing it out and also bookmarking and adding to stuff to My Documents.  I make folders and use my filing cabinet.

This beginners start-up sequence by SDeath comes in handy for BS2, but I got most of it memorized now.  Some of it has to be done in proper order or things malfunction and in flight have to be reset and started over.  I don't do the test checks as one would do in a real aircraft.

http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=35571

Also, this beginner intro into combat basics by Para_Bellum is helpful, I found this within the last week, just reading their forums.  I printed it out, see page 19, chase down the download source:

http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2626185/19.html

http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2626185

And the User Files video instruction are very helpful.  These 22 lessons used to be interactive before Black Shark 2:

http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/video/bs2-training/

This guy redid some of them, his way, just for BS2.  Download the .miz files and drop them into the folder sequence Black Shark 2/Missions.  They will then come up in the BS2 Index under Missions.

http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=84612

Realize most all the good files were posted in 2008 and 2009.  LOL!  Some of it is being done for the BS2 newbie, lately, by the members, not the staff.

My biggest gripe is in Multiplayer, there is not much available with low ping rates, but maybe I need to join a squad.

Here are their User Files, members created, most are free.  Just set the filter selections as to what you are seeking.  Most are .miz files and add them to to your Missions folder as I stated above.

http://files.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/

It is just too much to also learn LockOn Flamming Cliffs 2 and #3 is in the works.  This version is not as intense the learning curve and more servers are available in Multiplayer.

I actually downloaded Dragon's Mission Pack to be played only in Multiplayer.

http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=43361&highlight=Dragons+Missionpack

Multiplayer kind of sucks.  I finally get into the combat area or I am RTB to rearm and refuel or get repaired and POOF! somebody closed their server or reloaded a new mission.

So I play on my own PC server by myself and create a solo LAN party.  I can play all day.  I set a password so nobody pesters me.  My ping rate is 16!  LOL!  I have another PC, I checked it out to see if I really was on their server.  I was.  I do not know if I could host very many people on my computer.  I have always wanted to get a dedicated server, but I need to own a small country to afford it.

I found all this stuff on my own.  Plenty here for the beginner that wants to take the plunge into the madness.

It is all good, it is fun.

Welcome to the asylum.
