Ok, something else thats bugging the heck out of me, but occurred belatedly- wasn't "Balance of Terror" from TOS the first time anyone had seen a Romulan, and the first clue anyone in Starfleet had that they were related to the Vulcans? So why do they glance over it in the movie like it was no big deal and they'd known it all along? And how did they even know Nero's ship was Romulan? Its not like the ship or weaponry would have been familiar, or like they saw them on the viewscreen and said "Oh, they're Romulans. That makes sense."

:huh   :cry

The answer to your question is that, the timeline changed! When Nero came through the time warp on the day Kirk was born, this changed the timeline so that the Federation was introduced to Romulans several decades before the events of "Balance of Terror" in the original timeline...

No- how did the Kelvin crew- or Starfleet for that matter- know who they were? Its not like they went right to the Romulans and accused them, and the Romulans responded "Oh yeah, he's ours, but he's from 200 years in the future, so we're not responsible for him."

You are incorrect..  The Federation was introduced to Romulans during the Earth/Romulan War (2156-2160)..  http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Earth-Romulan_War
This is canon and was proposed by Roddenberry himself..

Yes, but they'd never seen a Romulan until they hacked into the Warbird on "Balance of Terror" and saw through their viewscreen. Remember the whole "shocking" moment when they realised that the Romulan Commander looked an awful lot like Spock (and incidentally, Sarek...)? And the whole thing with the junior officer (I forget his name) going off on Spock because his father or someone had been killed in the Earth-Romulan War?

And theres one heck of a logic jump to see Nero's monstrosity and an early Romulan ship (the one seen in TOS was a new type, remember?) and think they came from the same race.

But I'm not a nerd, really.

This is kind of a weird way to explain things, so bare with me....
Earth had a war with the Romulans from 2156-2160...  The Federation knew generally what Romulans look like from bodies found in the vicinity(floating in space) following a battle..
Green blood, pointed ears, hostile....  Must be Romulans...
The Federation knew there was some relation between Romulans and Vulcans..  How did they know they were Romulans?  Ael spoke with Capt. Robau on the view screen....

With the knowledge of what Romulans looks like (roughly) I think the crew was probably able to extrapolate that these were Romulans..

As far as the Narada, it looks nothing like the Romulan Mining vessel that it should be due to heavy modifications with Borg technology...
This was in the CountDown comic book series preceding the movie as well as lots of other tidbits of info..

Ok, I think my geek stature just went up about 10 notches...

There's lots of stuff you just sort of have to put together..  Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman both said they find some of the books to be considered canon as well as what was in the movies and on TV.  Some of the info I'm stating here was in books as well as series/movies.
You can't just have a war and not see what the other side's dead look like...  Especially if you're fighting in space, you'll have bodies floating around due to explosive decompression of the hull(there were no shields in those days)..  The same happens in Naval sea battles..  Makes sense...
There was a definite suspicion (especially after the Earth/Romulan War) that Vulcans and Romulans were related somehow..  When the crew of the Kelvin saw what Ael looked like (on the view screen talking to Capt. Robau) I'm sure it was easy to put two and two together....

A ship powered by anti-mater would have a pretty big expolosion wouldn't it. Kind of like a nuke going off? I doubt there would be much left of a body to make an identification of it.

Of course I think its been said before, why was Kirk's mother on board the Kelven [pregnant]? This was BEFORE the time anomaly occured. It wasn't untill STNG that families were brought on board the ships due to long voyages.

During the Earth/Romulan War, Romulan ships were not powered by Anti-Matter and could only reach around Warp 2 for short periods of time before its deuterium stores were depleted..
Romulan ships of that era were Fusion Powered....  The precursor to Starfleet at that time(UE: United Earth) had just started to implement Matter/Antimatter reactors and their ships started
to take ship of the more traditional looking Starfleet vessels..  Romulan ships looked more like big mushrooms with the interior of the vessel housing mostly deuterium..
Weapons of the time were Atomic, Fusion, or conventional based on both sides of the conflict...

To answer your second question: this is just one of those things that violates its own canon throughout the whole Star Trek Saga....  In Balance of Terror, we see Specialist Martine
and Lt. Tomlinson getting married..  Ships are out on patrol or exploration missions for months, even years at a time..  They probably hadn't stopped off at a Starbase in at least 9 months..?
Logical that they would be together...  After all, dating isn't forbidden Starship..  Marriage obviously isn't forbidden Starship..  I don't think sex is forbidden on Starship..
Pregnancy will happen..
