There's something to be said for a large frame vehicle hitting a small one.  However, there are major trade-offs for this increase in hitting power:

1.) Increased stopping distance
2.) Reduced handling ability
3.) And most interestinly- poorer driver attitude

When you drive something enormous (Suburban, F250+), you are betting your life that your car will simply demolish theirs.  However, unless you drive an 18-wheeler, there are always larger vehicles out there.  If you need a people mover (more than 3 kids), a midsize SUV with three rows of seats will give you the best of both worlds.

The other problem is that many collisions don't involve other cars, rather objects of (relative to your car) infinte inertia.  Objects such as- mountainsides, bottoms of ravines, water, buildings, roads (ie rollover due to operator error) and trains.  Your Expedition is still just a speck compared to the punch those things pack.

Furthermore, a driver who is high up is more aggressive.  Those soccer moms all chose to drive those vehicles, and look what happened to them!  You feel invincible, but you aren't; this is how people get killed.  Those who feel they are invincible will behave that way, and frequently with horrific results.

Therefore, if you are willing to pony up 40k up front and over time for fuel, get a sedan!  Then, if safety is the #1 priority, equip it with a reinforced roll cage, bucket seats, and six-point harnesses.  You don't have to be big to be safe.

The more people make plans to share cars the higher the price will rise.

It has nothing to do with oil supply and everything to do with target profits.

30 years ago when gas was about 1.25 a gallon they asked a senior vp of an oil company why were they charging such high prices, his reply was because we can.  price of gas has nothing to do with supply and demand and more to do with speculation.  they dont even make sense with their zone pricing.  same gas delivered to cities or gas stations a few blocks away are all different.  it doesnt make any sense.

It makes it easy for them to charge a lot at the pump because there aren't that many gas mfgs. Lets face it, the market is an oligopoly, and thus unofficial/unstated price fixing is the name of the game. If we can find ways such that we don't need so much of their product, (bio diesel, etc..) then their impact is not as destructive on the economy.

I see more ford explorers upside down off the road than any other car.

I was driving from key biscayne to west palm beach at 1:00 am three weeks in a row on I95 and saw a ford explorer roll over both times......actually saw it happen.

Both drivers were not injured badly..............and they did not have bridgestone tires.

Third week was a jeep in the median already upside down when I got there.

excuse my lack of sympathy but we're currently paying about £1.40/l here, about $10/gall.

so my golf's 10gall tank cost ~$100 to fill up, but I do get 350miles out of it ...

350 miles won't get you half way across Texas. :) That is some miles per gallon though if all you need to do is get yourself somewhere.

My Daughter's 2010 Camaro is rated at 29mpg. She gets around 26 or 27 mpg and has close to 330 hp ATC. :D

We have some 600+ RWHP camaros in the club getting 19mpg.

just spotted this on the bbc news site:

Asda sold 12.9p petrol by mistake in Bradford

Asda has admitted drivers paid just 12.9p a litre for petrol after staff put a decimal point in the wrong place.

About 50 motorists stocked up on unleaded fuel at the petrol station in Rooley Lane, Bradford, West Yorkshire, on Thursday.

Drivers queued up to use the automatic card-payment pumps for about two hours until the mistake was spotted.

Some motorists also filled up petrol cans with the bargain fuel after word spread around the city.

An Asda spokesman said: "For a couple of hours some lucky customers got some petrol at the wrong price at our Rooley Lane store."
