Eve online
« on: January 03, 2015, 03:35:35 PM »
Thinking about giving it a go. A lot of stuff to learn for this nearly 50 year old dude. Might be fun to play on the road in the evenings and such. I guess start with the tutorial and free trial? Then go from there.

I work related to mining so maybe I'll look for a good mining corp to join. Know any?

Go and find a good group of pleople to play with. A new pilot is basically helpless in any kind of PvP area when going lone wolf, and will be for a loooong time, as your charactes hasn't got the skillz and the equipment.  :old:

Couple of guys who used to be in the Widowmakers play it a lot now, their rigs couldn't keep up with AH and they migrated to Eve online
wrag & Spacer play it - think they have the same handles there.

I refuse to play Elite until they at least fix the issue of the police attacking you for absolutely no reason. :old:

Rules of EVE:

1)Anything can happen in the sandbox
2)Trust no one
3)Be careful wondering into low sec
4)Do all the available beginner missions (even if you don't plan on doing combat, or transportation, or exploring etc etc. You get isk and free ships/modules/etc)
5)Re-read 1 and 2

Have fun! EVE is one of those games if I had everyday to commit to gaming I'd be on. Still hop on once and while and flail around helplessly in faction warfare.

I've been playing Eve for a year this month. Great game. I'm primarily a miner with a little bit of PVP on the side. My in-game name is Dylan Tompkins. Shoot me an Eve-mail sometime and I can hook you up with anything you need for mining. I also have some corp members (corp = squad in AH) who are good at PVP that can help you if you decide to go that way.

They appear to have issues.
Any 'issues' are rapidly fixed, but most seem to be caused by players themselves making mistakes; hitting 'boost' while in a station and crashing into the walls being a common one.

I refuse to play Elite until they at least fix the issue of the police attacking you for absolutely no reason. :old:
Carelessness when firing guns so that stray shots hit System Authority ships (police), resulting in them shooting back can be avoided!  There is no equivalent of Killshooter in Elite, so it's a bit like shooting friendlies in a scenario, except they instantly turn into enemies and will kill you.  So, watch where you are firing and avoid hitting the police and they won't attack you.... simple.

I can honestly say I have had very few issues in over a year of playing the various testing stages of Elite: Dangerous and none since release just under three weeks ago.  Police used to interdict all players regardless of whether or not they were 'wanted', but never went on to attack any player who was 'clean'; however, changes were made so that police don't interdict clean players at all now - any interdictions I have had recently have been from pirate NPCs and I usually manage to successfully evade them.  Even if the evasion fails I have always managed to boost away until the frame shift drive is ready to use again and jumped away.

Another problem people seem to get caught out by is non-payment of fines for things like loitering over landing pads or in station doorways.  I don't think it is easy to miss the text warnings given before and when fines are imposed and, although annoying if a bigger ship was to blame for not being able to get away from a pad or blocking the doorway, paying the fine as soon as possible avoids the non-payment turning into a bounty after 24 hours and your status changing to 'wanted'.

I have only been wanted once which was caused by my own mistake when landing at an outpost.  I think I must have been trying to land on the incorrect pad and was warned for loitering, warned again when I continued trying to land on it and finally blown up!  Because the station was quite a long way out from the main core area and the station I had started from, when I respawned back in the game I was back at the original station many light years away.  I tried to pay the fines but was in the wrong system and couldn't find anywhere to pay them, eventually becoming wanted.  I managed to reach the original outpost and pay the fine, clearing my name and have remained clean since then.

Another common mistake is to upgrade to a better ship without adequate 'insurance' to rebuy it if it is lost; or buying too much cargo without leaving enough credits for insurance.  Very easily avoidable with common sense.  :)

Carelessness when firing guns so that stray shots hit System Authority ships (police), resulting in them shooting back can be avoided!

That is not what is happening, though that is also something they should do something about.

Scanning for, finding, and attacking wanted ships will always eventually result in the system authority vessels (or whatever they're called) to declare crime detected after laying eyes on you, not even scanning you. Sometimes it seems they will follow you without firing for a while, but eventually you will come under attack by the police while you are in clean status, and they will not end up wanted when they hit you. The only thing you can do is run, go back to the station and claim all your bounties, and that resets the problem. Until the next round that is.

It is possible to ignore those corrupt cops and continue to hunt, until you get too many of them after you, or just one 'conda. Basically, this limits how much cash I can make before heading back to base. It could be 250k or 500 credits before it happens.

I believe the problem has something to do with the wanted ships being in the same faction as the cops. Eventually every ship I see shows as enemy on radar.

This is not worth the $75 I payed for the beta, and I will not play until at least this issue is fixed.

If you have a bounty on your head, yes you will attract the authorities.  Avoid getting bounties and all will be well.  Sounds like things are working as they should be to me, but then I'm more of a trader/explorer and avoid fights as far as possible.  :)

As annoying as the game is right now, people trying to defend it are even worse.

Heh all that explanation about 'loitering' and getting accidental tickets that may require you to travel to another star system sounds more like a chore than fun gameplay to me. If I wanted that kind of fun I could just go to the city centre and make some donuts with my car untll I get ticketed lol.
