I still have the faithful old Kero-Sun out in the garage, patiently waiting to be called forth in time of distress.  Real question is whether you can get 1K kerosene anywhere these days.

Maybe those stoves caused the polar vortex this year to extend down to Texas, Alabama and Louisiana.

Get a wood pellet stove. After 30 years of cutting wood and using different wood burning systems, I am sold on the pellet stoves. 

Not too expensive either if you want just a simple one for a backup. Pretty easy to install with little clearance needed or major construction.

  When it rains it pours.  We got a small amount of snow Monday night into Tuesday,only 25cm,that about 10 inches and it was slightly cold minus 5 F. Windchill was the kicker,minus 20F,made clearing the snow not a lot of fun.

We had a wood stove until we replaced the furnace with a wood/oil furnace, then we got a Pellet stove. They are certainly nice if you don't mind paying for pellets.

Had an outside wood furnace and loved it. But I had an unlimited wood resource. So far the last 2 years it has cost me about $650 to heat my place with pellets. The  factor is worth it now.

Yeah...we had the wood source and just the trees downed in the winter was more than enough for another year's worth of firewood. But the entire summer was spent cutting, splitting, stacking. Once my dad got older we started offsetting it a bit just by buying a half a cord or whatever.
