Got one of the three Makarovs I bought today (stupid one gun a month California law)..

Thing is covered in cosmoline.. bulgarian manufacture 1988.. mint condition... appears to be unfired.  Gonna take off early and clean the damn thing up.  Allready have about 3,000 rounds of russian ammo on hand for it.

A friend of mine has a Car "Machine Parts Cleaner".  The thing worked brilliantly in a few minutes on 2 Garands and 1 Springfield that were covered in cosmoline.

Just a FYI if you have any friends who like to restore vintage cars.

don't know how to post pics.    I use mineral spirits at the kitchen table.   Finish off with brake cleaner and then coat the whole thing with a light coating of breakfree clp.

on the next ones, try WD-40 and a parts-cleaner, brush.  it melts the cosvoline right off, and leaves all the survaces with a nice oil coating.

email someone the pics and maybe they can post them.
you need a website somewhere to be able to post.

Sounds sweet.

WD-40?   eeek.. I only use that for rusted bolts.
I had a friend that decided to 'lubricate' their bearings with it.

lol.. ate those puppies right up

When I had my PM (in army) I used TS-1 aviation fuel, RChS (Rastvor Dlya Chistki Stvolov - liquid for cleaning trunks) and usual gun oil. Thats all. 6 years without any problems.

How many guns do you have lazs?  You remind me of a character from "A Hymn to Battle"

hey Laz, you might wanna try one of those $99 CZ-52's next. They are a ton of fun. And with some hot loads more powerful than a .357.

Just signed up for a CHL class. Don't plan to carry often but will be nice to be able to. Now I need to buy a gun.

You have to buy from a FFL dealer in Ca.   My gun came from SOG but Aim sells em as do many others.   It really doesn't matter.  I paid 10 bucks extra for hand picks but I have never seen a Bulgarian mak that even looked worn at all.   They have chromed barells and are extremely well made.   hold 9 rounds of 9.2 x 18

paint thinner cuts the cosmo just fine and the brake cleaner gets the hard to reach spot but I dissasembled the firing pin(s) anyway.  I also cleaned a buddies who left it at my house.  CLP or any good gun oil after (the brake cleaner really dries out the pores of the metal.

The guns came out great.  My daughter and her friend were there and said "why did you buy those ugly guns?"   when I got em cleaned up they both wanted one.

TPI  the CZ52 is not a very good gun.  I don't like em.   You can get about half the energy of a .357 out of one without blowing it to pieces.

counted my guns,,,, Have 15  17 if you count the Maks I haven't got yet.  18 if you count the 22 conversion unit for the witness..Two are Model 97 shotguns and two are WWII rifles (Garrand and SMLE).  1 mini 14 stainless 40 rounder for crowd suppression... Rest are revolvers and pistols mostly in 44 or 45.   by no means a large collection.
