Any Air Warrior III players still around?

Many of us Ex-AirWarriors here.  The AOL WidowMakers are alive and well flying with the Knights.  Expect at least a six month learning curve in AH.  You will find, (eventually) that AH surpasses AW in almost every way.

The major differance is of course community.  The bond just isn't there.  You will find many dis-respectful kids here (*cough*Jay) who will annoy you, but thank goodness AcesHigh has a squelch feature.  (as in .squelch Jay1998)

What made AW special was the people in it.  It didn't have the best graphics, or even the best flight model, but the PEOPLE made it special.  To this day I refuse to purchase anything by ElectronicArts because they killed the dream. (sniff)

Welcome home.  I am in the Training arena usually every day at odd times.  Give me a shout and I will help you shake off the rust.

OH, and Jay, AW is older than you are.   It was the FIRST online multi-player game of any size.  All online multi-player games owe AW a dept of gratitude (you'll understand what that means someday hopefully) and AW helped shape ALL other WW2 sims.

How ya been?  I think the last I heard from you was about the time you got some promotion to Aid to the King or something :P

Good to see ya!  Jag15 just joined too. Usually on around primetime. Rooks.

Agree. Probably 90% of us have an AW background.
Perhaps a better question would have been.

What was your AW Handles?

Ditch tons of AW people here. As said Filth is here now and iko and several just came over who used to be in the Mighty Fluff.

I was and 3747 in AW .. with the Nightmares VMF-898. They are the Nightmares VMF-101 here.

You will find several AW squads scattered about .. NightHawks, CAF, Flying Tigers AVG, DAMNED, etc., etc.

As for the differences. Well there is a lot and will take you a bit of time to get used to them but after a few weeks it is no big deal.

FM:
Flight Model is different but when I came over from AW FR I did not find it a massive change. AH2 probably a bit more of change since it models 8 points of contact/force/whatever you call it enacting on the plane as it flies. Unlike AW AH1/AH2 the planes do not act as they fly on rails and several of them actually suffer from engine torque pulling them to a specific side.

You can fly with combat trim on or you can turn it off and manually trim your plane. Didn't have trim in AW.

Probably the stall characteristics of the plane will take a bit of getting used too. Several of the planes are real beast when you get slow and push the envelope. F4Us and 190s tend to roll and flip on their backs for example.

Could right alot more .. but think this will be the easiest to adapt too.

GM:
Gunnery model is a whole different ball of wax here. The hit shell / area of a plane is very tight on the exact shape of the plane itself. It got a lot tighter from AH1 to AH2. Not sure if is now exactly the shape of the plane or not but is very tight (small).

Many people have found that they have to get within 350 yards to actually hit enemy planes. Very big difference from AW long range sniping. Couple this with having to set gun convergence and you really have something different. Basically you have to select convergence points for your guns. Which is the point where all the bullets from your various guns intersect. Hit an enemy closer or farther out from that convergence point and your grouping starts to spread out .. making it harder to take down an enemy plane since you are not putting all bullets on one spot.

Also several of the guns are not as accurate as others .. 20 mm Hispanos are very accurate and produce tight groupings. Several of the German cannons are not very accurate and don't produce tight groupings (meaning you need to get closer and open up). Also different guns have different rates of fire and their shells drop off differently.

In LA7s you need to get close to have a decent chance of hitting for most people.

DM:
They just redid the damage model and damage applies more exactly to where your bullets hit. Meaning you can shoot out engines, shoot off wings, etc.

Also it makes it harder for snap shots .. if you hit the enemy outside of your convergence range you might put say two rounds on a wing, two round on the tail, and miss with two rounds. The damage is applied to where is hit .. which makes it more important to get a good hit and keep a burst on target for a bit. Or several bursts.

Also there is more types of damage available in AH2 that in AW. You can shoot out rudder, elevators, aierlons, wing tip, wing, oil, engine, fuel tank(s), specific guns, and wound the pilot.

Obviously there is a lot more difference but it would take a bit too write. Some planes have multiple fuel tanks, you have have drop tanks, rockets, different bombs (sizes), bombers can be upped in formations of 3 and the bomb model is massively different here from AW. etc., etc.

Useful differences to know:

(1) The AH 190 series is different from the AW 190.  For one thing, you can't frisbee the 190 like you could in AW.  For another, the AH 190 can actually dogfight.

(2) The AH Corsair series is different from the AW Corsair.  The AH Corsair is noticeably slower and bleeds energy faster than the AH Mustang, whereas in AW the stang and Corsair were about the same except for ammo loads and durability.

(3) AW had the N1k1; AH has the N1K2.  I didn't fly either one so I'm not sure what the FM and gunnery differences are.

(4) AW had the wirblewind; AH has the Ostwind.  Both serve the same purpose, just different rates of fire.

(5) In AW you captured a base by dropping troops on the runway.  In AH you capture a base by levelling the town buildings and dropping troops on the city.

(6) In AH the aircraft carriers move.

(7) AH has amphibious tanks.

(8) AH has more control over length of gun burst.

(9) The AH 109F isn't as fast as the AW 109F, in comparison to the other aircraft in the MA.

(10) You can win a map in AH.  In AW it was the same map all the time depending on which arena you were in.

(11) Better stall and blackout warning in AH.

(12) There's no way to deprive your opponent of Spitfire production.

(13) Only one gunner per bomber.  No more deathstars or bloodpigs.

(14) AH has two main types of tanks (not counting the LVT tank); AW only had one.

(15) AH has better terrain.

(16) You can customize your sounds in AH.

(17) Two types of vox radio in AH - range and tunable.

(18) AH has clouds and smoke.

I still have CDs and boxes from Air Warrior 1.something, Air Warrior 1.5, AW2, and AW3.  I flew RR for 6 months on AOL (AW4Windows) then jumped to FR with the 24th Fighter/Bomber Group ("The Skulls") where I was CO.  We flew FR Euro and FR Pac up until the bitter end (and beat the Shillelagh in the AOL squad vs squad duel), then I spent a year away from the hobby and got back into it a couple of years ago.  The Skulls are divided up amongst various countries and squadrons now so that we can exert unseen influences on the game like an invisible hand. Bwahahaha![/i]

Biggest difference to me:

The Yak can fly with any plane in the game here. (late war U model, not the D we had in AW).

I remember the squad vs. squad duel..ohhh yah...we won it all :)  I still have gun camera footage of that somewhere lol. Marcy, BigT, JDawg, and I. Biggest difference for me between AW and AH was that I was good at AWFR but I suck at AH haha. I still remember the first time I played with my suncom POS joystick in the RR arena on AOL. Subby and NoBaddy (he went by Fidel on AW4W) used to like to fly their A26s from the lake area, east to where us Seals were. They killed the crap out of us haha. After a while I caught on and NB showed me a few tricks in the P38 in RR. I got pretty good and eventually went to FR. Subby kind of took me under her wing in FR and that’s when I got really good. From there it was just practice and figuring out some things on my own. I went to a couple conventions and met a lot of great people. Those were some fun days. Airwarrior is the grand daddy of pretty much every massive online multiplayer game, and is probably the best one I ever played in terms of community and just pure fun. (And I've played them all....sad huh?)

356th to the Mighty Fluff
Oh and I was in the Nomads for one day on their very first mission. Not many people know that they started out as a bunch of people from other squads in alternate names to hide thier Identity. I cant remember my nomad name tho lol.
