:eek:   The memories of playing AW in AOL circa 1996 flooded back when I saw those screenies, Etch.  Brought to mind launching the game only to get the reminder to lower the color depth to 256 colors.  The second pic reminded me how the instrument panel would always be in view even when you turned your head.

I see AK-AK's point of how the AH FM seems more like RR than FR with the P-38 in particular.  I flew RR because FR seemed too, I don't know, harsh (I called it "Sur-Realism").  One moment you were making a turn, and the next you're in some weird backward spin with no in-between.  Or in a fight, suddenly black out for 5 seconds for the fatal mistake of pulling over 6 g's.  The tunnel vision in AH was very welcome after that.

I was Tbsco in AW to the bitter end.  Split my time between Pac and Euro arenas about 70/30.

Welcome, Ditch!

I loaded up SVGA AW, and was going to take a few screen captures. I *thought* it would be easy. The program ran well in WinXP, though it didn't recognize the usb control devices. I could fly it with the mouse though (flew with a mouse all the time on an Atari512ST):) Anyway, I could find no program that could capture the screen. I ran across those pictures looking for one.

Any AW vets here who could maybe give me a run down on how the two games are alike/different? Would appreciate much!

For me it was the extramly diciplined  E fighter  Fortunatly most werent.
I figured if I could dodge em long enough to frustrate em into turn fighting. or in getting the fight ot go down and not up.
They were mine.
A Large portion of the time I was right
I find the FM2 can fly alot like the AW Yak

Notice, in the OLD AW pic (it looks circa 1992), how the ICON wasn't actually on the screen but off to the side.

I miss it being that way.

I miss the colored rudder stripes, too

And euro/pac arenas (choice?  what is that?)

I never cared for the 3-D version of AW. I flew it in 2D mode up until AW was shut down.

AW's planes were always easier to make out than in AH for some reason, despite the game running at 1/2 the resolution that AH does and the planes having 1/5 the poly count.  I could always "see" better in AW than in AH.

I think its 1995 or so. With SVGA AW, came new shapes and things like propellers. Also, real time instead of half-time :)
I have older versions of AW but they're platform specific - in my case Atari.

Here's the release notes dated 7-18-95. Believe it or not, the program runs in WinXP

New features of the 1.20 DOS release:

Front End/Artwork
=================
1. Advanced aircraft shapes, complete with propeller and landing gear
   animation, and country markings.
2. The N1J2 Shinden Kai “George” - a late war Japanese fighter airplane,
   complete with cockpit artwork
3. Updated Miles sound library.
4. Native support for the S3 family of video cards (i.e. Diamond Stealth).
5. Bug Fixes

Terrain
===========
1. Redesigned zones to support a greater number of simultaneous players
   in our terrains.
2. Additional forward airfields in World War I to allow players to get
   to the action quicker.
3. A new Vehicle City arena for armored warfare amidst three large city areas.
4. Strategic bombing and resupply in the production real-time terrains.
5. Improved real-time Pacific layout to prevent central Atoll crowding.

Host
========
1. Support for new terrain and strategic bombing
2. Bug fixes

Oh my GOD !!!

Flossy... thanks for the nostalgic look back...heh heh...
You had special terrains and/or runway "highlights" loaded didn't you ?

Most of our squad made it over from AW. The 81st Krewsaderz flew for Country A in RR. I think it started on AOL, but I was there for AW3 and AWMV playing through Gamestorm (screw EA...).

 I miss the "deathstar" excursions when we had every gun manned in the B-17 capping a field by ourselves.... LOL !!!

"Considering your youth now, I suspect AW was a little over your head at the age you would have had to of been then."

Heh heh heh.   Considering he wasn't even born yet when AW first came out, that is petty much a sure thing.

Yep, the Nightmares weren't able to carry over their trademark brackets , so now I'm just plain old BFD.  Ditch, welcome back, many of the old Bz are flying Rook.

Did anybody play around with Crack 21[?] (SVGA AW)You could modify the cockpit art (within the confines of the allowable dimensions) and swap sounds. I modified and rearranged the gauges somewhat to make the G-meter more visible, narrowed a few of the cockpit frames and at one point substituted Beavis and butthead and Simpson’s sounds for some of the game sounds.

Firing the MGs was Beavis maniacally laughing

Getting hit was "you handsomehunk... or Doh... or of course... Fire Fire!"

It got old, but before it did it was hard to fight for laughing. It helped that my roommate Yyrkoon had the same files on his system and we played in the same computer room :) I have it all on a zip disk somewhere.

Yea I know and that kinda sucked but they wouldnt even let me have  just plain old "IT" either though it kinda looses something without the / and the \.
I have another idea for the name which I like very much but barring a responce from the powers that be I will haveta wait till I can get another system together that is capable of running AHII so I can open a second account so my son and I both can play at the same time instead of sharing.
and god nly knows how long thats gonna be.
Its not a huge thing as I use Drediock everywhere I belong to on the net. so if you see that name its probably me. and if it isnt its just some cheap wannabe imposter :)
