I will say you something. I invited to fly in this game more than 4 people. Now only two are flying - me and one my friend, and even we often consider to give up. There is no fun to be shot down in few second after take off. Not because of being outnumbered, not because of being vulching, no - we will complain about such a things couple of years later. Just because of difference in skills.
And you suggest me to fly planes where I would get my first kill after two-three months? Are you really sure that I will fly so long?
You guys flying for years, and it will take years to be like you. OK, it is not the problem, I want and I will. But I am less than half among those my friends who tried this game. And if I were so stupid to follow your advices I would give up 3 months ago.
Sorry , but you just forget how you felt when you start this game. May be you are right, and I really have to start with Hurricane, but... But to understand this I have to be you.
It is very simple. To keep this game funny you must to get new players because old players leave for various reasons. And this game has to create some fun for newbies. Otherwise sometimes you will have no problem with imbalance. Very difficult to create imbalance with three playing pilots...
Have you ever actually flown any of those planes? I'll try to keep this relatively simple, because I am apparently one of those people who've been playing years and years and have forgotten what it is like to be a newbie (actually.. I haven't, but thats a different story).
Have you considered the possibility that it isn't what you are flying, but how you are flying it?
Damn, this is gonna get long, I'll apoligize in advance, and I commend you if you manage to make it through this wall of text. It really irritates me when people cop out and say "But.. but.. but.. I HAVE to fly a La7/P51/Nik/Spit.. I'm a newbie, and I ain't good enough to get kills in anything else". I have bad news for you. While the pilot/plane equation is weighed in favor of the plane, the pilot does have some role in it. A guy that knows what he is doing in a 190a5 is going to kick your bellybutton if you don't know what you are doing in a Spit 9. So, whats the best way to figure out what to do?
1. Ask. The game is full of people who know tons about the planes and how they stack up against one another. That is valuable information.
2. Watch film. Find someone to give you film. I'd recommend Leviathn, Wldthing, Ack-Ack, Zazen, Beetle, and any number of other people. Go up to the Help & Training forum, make a topic called "I'd like some films". People will post them. You download them, and watch them in the handy Aces High film viewer. The film viewer is a nice tool. You can jump from plane to plane, go to an external view, turn on trails, slow down the playback so you can REALLY see what happened when. You can learn a lot from a film. Different people have different styles of fighting. You will learn at least one new thing every time you watch a film of a fight, for the first month you spend watching films. I can practically guarantee it.
3. Find someone in the MA that seems to be landing oodles of kills. Ask them if you can join their plane for a sortie, and find out how they do it. Copy them. Don't worry, it isn't plagerism.
I'm of a more "spartan" school than most people. I think that the quickest way to learn how to fight is to fight often, and in a plane that isn't nescesarily the "best" at fighting. For instance, take a 190, fly low, let people bounce you. You'll learn how to fight from a disadvantage in a less manueverable plane. Part of that learning is learning how to get away (no, usually just straight running won't do the trick).
There are a lot of people out there who really enjoy helping other people. There are even more people who will help you if you manage to catch them in a good mood (typically you'll learn more advanced stuff from the grouchy people, the trick is catching em at the right time). The resources are out there, and after 4 months you should've already started to avail yourself of them.
