Fly till ya die? or fly to live?
« Reply #30 on: August 30, 2004, 06:01:04 PM »
I fly to emulate, as closely as possible, what a real WW2 pilot in my plane would do in my situation (usually flying lone wolf w/o a dedicated wingman). Self-preservation was their foremost concern, as is mine, immediately followed by the preservation of those I am flying near if any and then finally the destruction of as many enemy as possible. AH is a role-playing game as well as a simulation for me. I've flown every which way imaginable over the years, I have found that flying to live is just simply the most entertaining way to approach the game for me personally.

I fly to live too but that doesn't mean in a timid manner.  If the situation presents itself, advantage or no advantage I'll still fight.  I will use common sense if I see to many fighters coming my way.  I won't start a TnB fight against someone if in the end I'll just have 4 cons jumping me.

Then again I'll take the chance depending on who it is I'm jumping in for.  If a friendly is out there getting jumped that I know won't just ditch me right after I go down to clear them then I'll jump in.  Too often have I jumped in for someone and watched them tear off as now the folks jumping him turn on me.  Guess it just depends on the situation really.

Zazen,

Actually I think that is where many of the "realism" fliers go wrong.  Self preservation was not always their primary goal.  Self preservation and succeeding at the task assigned to them were at often at odds with one another and which a pilot would favor varied.

There are way, way, way too many things that were done in WWII that absolutely would not have happened if self preservation had been the unquestioned first goal.

As I said I fly alone on Free Hunt missions almost exclusively. My goal, like any WW2 pilot's would have been in that situation, is to destroy enemy planes in my area. They were expected to do so only insofar as it did not mean sacraficing themselves in the process. The only time I fly with more grandiose mission objectives in mind is on Squadnight, RJO, or in those rare instances I join an organized mission. Still, it is not expected a pilot sacrafice himself for any short-term objective. In WW2, highly trained and experienced pilots were a very precious resource, much morseo than the airplanes themselves, and as such were not to be squandered recklessly.

I am not saying reckless abandon and altruistic self-sacrafice did not happen. I am saying, if it did, it was rare and largely unreported as those pilots operating in this way died in the process, undoubtedly earning a post-humous medal for their widow back home to admire and hang proudly on the mantle above the fireplace as a solemn reminder of her 'heroic' husband. ;)

Fly to live...

I believe the art of the game is to devise a strategy to engage superior odds, disrupt thier mission, then RTB alive.
Any 2bithalfwitlame7wannadweeb can up a plane from a field and run blindly to engage superior odds without any concern for life.

I fly to live... the best way to do that is to kill every single thing around you as fast as you can so you can rtb with not a single enemy in the air anywhere around you.

Unfortunately, a finite ammoload makes that particular survival tactic problematic at times.:(
