Il2 will continue on, but maybe not for the western part of the world. 1C is the distributer in Russia, and Oleg Maddox has made it clear they will be continuing with pay add ons (1946 Eastern front What-If so far announced) for them.
From what Oleg said on Russian boards - Russian releases by 1C are unprofitable, and it's a very soft term.
Jewel case with one game CD sells here for less then 100 rubles, 2xCD - 200, etc. Only maniacs like me buy boxed versions. I bought IL-2 when it was released, for 700+ rubles, box including funny booklets like "Introduction to air combat by Oleg Maddox"

and a good T-shirt. The game lasted for about 3 hours on my HDD, I couldn't tolerate the view system

Russian releases can't give you reasonable money for a game developed only for this market, only official releases of translated bestsellers like Doom-3 are profitable. Flightsims are too far from teenage mainstream.
JFYI: 1C is almost a monopolist on Russian accounting/business software market. It's their main business, and this gaming projects are only a part of a "software supermarket" programm.
Oleg had special resons to turn to 1C to complete an IL-2 project. It happened in early-99, after a 1998 "crisis" in Russia.
