I won a YMCA medal one time when I was 10 years old (beginner) for doing a judo throw I didn't even know I was doing.  The instructor said it was the best application of the (difficult and advanced throw) he'd even seen.  I was trying to do a different throw and was was so lame I couldn't do it.  Ended up being a different throw and earned me an instant medal.:D

I was just curious to see why such things are awarded. i always considered medals or ribbons to be given for serious and important stuff...but for good conduct? I just dont understand :)

To be honest, I think it's so you can spot a ****bird like me, from a mile away. I mean, I was the only Navy E-5 in my unit that didn't have a GCM. Most of the other guys who got into trouble didn't stick around long enough to get that extra chevron lol.

Funny thing is, it keeps creeping up on me. I got in trouble in law school for not disclosing my NJP during the application process. So now, on top of not having my pretty red ribbon, I have a nasty letter in my school record. :rofl  I'm such a lucky guy.

I bet when I die, they are going to tell the story of my Article 15 at my Golly-geened eulogy :p

Conversely to Sikboy, the medal that turned out to be the most valuable to me was the AF Expeditionary... it's been a nice feather to have.

Oddly enough, we didn't get the AF medal until the third time we went to the Persian Gulf. I can't recall if it was worth more points on the advancement exam. More ribbons simply meant more cost when you had to replace them for uniform inspections. I didn't consider it to be of any value at the time we got it.

I made all-division second team twice and all-division first team once this previous Saturday at an Indoor Track meet.  No medals for it yet, they give em out a bit later.

Just thought I'd share.  Its only my second year of doing track and field, and its going pretty well.

USAF 10 years so far.

Air Force Achievement Medal 3 Oakleaf clusters
Outstanding Unit Award 3 Oakleaf clusters w/ Valor
Air Force Good Conduct Medal 2 Oakleaf clusters
National Defense Service Medal w/ Star
Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal
Air Force Overseas Long Tour
Longevity Service Award
NCO Professional Military Education Graduate
Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon
Air Force Training Ribbon

The Valor device is in question.  The device was issued through the 335th FS.  It may actually be a clerical error which wouldn't be surprising.  I can only think of a few instances that it might have been issued for.  I'm still researching as to why it was put on my rip.

Be serious here I think I'm not the only person who is curious. There's too many movies and shows about the U.S. military. Give us a 'day in the life' story about what you did in the Finnish military when you got that award. What were you shooting? What were the standards?

Medals of Merit
The Medal of Merit from the Central Chamber of Commerce of Finland is the Finnish business community's way of recognizing long and faithful service. The medal of merit is a beautiful and highly regarded recognition - even for a life's work. The Finnish business community has awarded medals of merit as an encouragement to employees and entrepreneurs since 1929.
