Good references, Sandman.  You must be an editor.

I have no problem with either one or two spaces after periods and colons.  To me, anything that helps break up a glob of type is a bonus.

Main need is consistent style that does not detract from message content.

And then there are those that never follow a period with two spaces, but instead with two more periods.

Boss and I have an ongoing debate about this...I guess cause he's older he's stuck with type learning. I generally don't space twice unless I am typing a letter to the Governor or the President, only then do I follow the old conventional rules.

Character spacing depends on what makes the best readability.  This paragraph has two spaces between sentences.  Is this easier or harder to read than the next paragraph which has only one space between sentences?  Here are some short sentences for the same comparison:

He goes there.  She goes there.  They go there.  We go there.  Everyone goes there.  Nobody goes there.  Whew, enough short.

One space seems enough, doesn't it.  But two spaces like this make the sentences a little more distinctive.

Hmmm... I don't think the type renders properly on HTML docs. Double spacing after the period is ignored as a rule.
