I was a bit disappointed when I got bottle of something with text "96 Proof" and... Well that didn't need any mixer.
As far as I know, "Proof" is simply % Alcohol x2. So 96 Proof would be 48% alcohol. And if you didn't need a mixer, it was either really good, or you're just that much of a man.
With regard to American Beer... meh. There are some regional breweries that I like quite a bit. Dominion here in Northern Virginia does some really good work (IMO of course), but I'm not really into the "Arms race" of Alcohol % either lol. AFter 5%, I'll just switch to Bourbon
