Skuzzy you're thinking of the Lisa ?

By marketing I thought of marketing for the customer and not marketing for victim of the Peter Principle

MAC decided to be propietary. How would the consumer computer world be if they had won?

MAC had it all, then lost because they were greedy........how ironic.

Wrong I can work all day long and I've worked all day long with system not having a single line of code from MS.

Who would buy a QNX system with a MS code line inside :D

Then why do people buy MS when other OS's are free?

Ignorance NUKE.

Straffo, Lisa came along way after the original Mac.  The original Mac had the GUI frontend, but came way ahead of MS-DOS.  MS-DOS came along when IBM shipped its first PC.

I can dig up the exact dates as I have all that at home.

MS killed off the competition through buyouts and when that did not work, litigation.  There have been viable options along the way, but each time they get close to inking any kind of contract with an OEM, they get crushed by MS's attorney's and bank account.

A: they dont know anything else is out there.

B: if they do they dont think it will offer the same features/usability.

C: They do not think they are tech savy enought to install them.

Because it's bundled with their PC.

And because 95% of the user have trouble with basic task on their computer you change the picture on their desktop and they start crying.

How can they install an other OS without knowing the basic mecanism of a computer ?

Each day thousand of computer are given to complete newbie ,imaging if we do the same for cars ?
How many kill it will give ?

My mother anyway is pretty happy of her linux (debian) box but I'm the one making the administrative task.

Under XP she had to many trouble as tons of software are coded by ****** who don't know how to code.
Ex : Why the hell a Webcam software had to be started with administrator privileges ?

no way Skuzzy.

MAC was more expensive and propietory. People were not ignorant, they chose value like they always do. No product in the history of man is successfull because the company "fooled" people into buying.

Back then, MAC was the only popular choice, but they blew it. MAC was the best and the most popular of the time.

I was referring to your question about the free OS's NUKE.

Apple priced themselves out of the market.  They also wanted to remained a closed operation.  This forced the world to look for other alternatives.  They made a bad business decision.

Apple had a good piece of the market (they were around before the PC came into being so they had a good controlling interest in the market), but those numbers were tainted by all the educational institutions Apple donated computers to.
Once that started drying up, Apple's share started a slow drop, which has only recently gone up due to the iPod (go figure they actually add that to computer sales).
During Apple's peak, Radio Shack stilll outsold them.

When?

I would be floored if you could find a singlemonth were macs out sold PCs(of all types).

Heck after my apple two died we went with a PC and DOS cause apple boned schools with the BS apples for schools deal(IE givng most schools apple 2s, after the dropped support for them) and macs sucked cause you could not upgrade, AND, most software retailers in the area were already dropping apple titles cause they didnt sell.

by 92, egghead had a one rack apple section lol.

hell even OS/2 from IBM had 3 racks!
