i know that... thats what i am asking... is he going to be building / maintaing them?

or is "Construction Battalion" a navy way of saying something completely different?

it just is odd to me such a well known position (you all seem to know exactly what it is) would exixt while not in direct contact with the water in any way. i mean working on the ships in harbor, serving on the ships, flying the planes off the ships, in contact in some way with the boats is what i guess i envision 3/4 or more of the navy doing.

i could be mistaken and 3/4 of the navy never see's the water even, but that doesn't make sense. i just know nothing about all this and it is confusing the heck out of me LOL.

could someone please explain exactly what a seabee is (as in job functions), and why everyone automatically know what it is.

thank you,.

SeaBee fix, build, unbuild pretty much anything. They do anything from repairing things on other military branch bases to building bridges on the other side of the world.  SeaBees work hand in hand with Marines, and from what I hear from my recruiter, the SeaBees will be converted to the Marines in the future.

They do work on water too. Im going in for Marine Engineering (the water kind) Will be building/repairing/ and designing new ships.

SeaBee's also build bases for the USMC. Marines don't exactly stay out to sea. They tend to go inland and establish a base.

thank you. that makes sense now.

you say they will be transferred to the marines? i guess that is more logical. thats what was making me go "what the heck"?

all armed forces if i typed badly and made it sound inflamatory i did not, it just bugs me when i don't understand something, and can't logically figure it out
I don't know what to put here yet.

SeaBee's typically work closely with the marines...or they used to. In my stint in the military, stayed at Panama one time and we were on a naval base. Our quarters were in between SeaBees and Seal quarters. Both Seals and SeaBees partied hard.

Hey!

The kid's just now signing up!

Quit trying to run him off with all this talk of hanging around with Marines!

The Army also has a segment of itself outside of the Corps of Engineers that performs a similar function. They are responsible for helping combat ops with establishment of barriers, barrier removal as well as bridging water obstacles. While they are not considered a strictly combat unit like Infantry, Armor or Artillery they are certainly in combat just as intense if not more so at times.

Both the Seabees and the Combat Engineers have a very proud history and tradition. Just because you are in a unit who's main weapon is a bulldozer does not mean it isn't closely tied to combat. to the members of both.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

SeaBees, among others helped make island hopping possible during WWII in the Pacific.  Coconut grove --> airbase for bombers and fighters.  !

Yep, the SeaBees carved many a base out of the island jungles across the Pacific during WWII.  Some of them also become mechanics while onboard ships.  Good friend of mine was a SeaBee from 72- 80ish I think.  Great guy.  He can build or fix just about anything.

When I was in SA in Desert Storm, I had a HUGE perimeter to secure. I need to channel any aggressors. SO Instead of digging and such by hand I request some SeaBee help. 6 guys show up with Bulldozers and backhoes. I gave em my plan they looked at it and made few changes and 8 hours later Walllaaaaaaa Instant defense zone. All I had to do was lay wire, mines and trip flares.

My unblistered hands and unbroken back not to mention those of my troops love the SeaBees.:aok

The best of luck to you. You'll be in good company, considering teh history of the SeaBees. Me late father-in-law was a SeaBee in the PTO in WWII. Saw action in the early years of Guadalcanal.

Builder.

i go to DEP (delayed entry program) meetings every wednesday, we do PT and learn stuff bout the navy. its kinda like layed back basic training. anyway this takes place at the recruiting building which is clustered with all the other branch's buildings so when i show up early to a meeting and nobody is in the navy office, a guy from the marine, army and sometimes coast gaurd office will invite me in out of the sun. so i get along with marines, among others.
