The first flight sim I ever flew was in circa 1978/1979 on one of the first Apple home computers in the state of Alaska.  It wasn't untill 1996 that I flew on a computer again.

What eskimo posted was a screenie and a little video from SubLogic Flight Simulator version 1.  Worth pointing out that Eskimo didn't capture that video or screenie, its been around for years... (also worthy of note, he didn't claim that he did).

Specfiically that was the little WWI area in it.  Version 2 improved slightly when the ground became green and the sky was blue and the mountains became brown.

I think SubLogic owned it till version three.  After that, the legendary Bruce Artwick sold it.

And many of you probably don't realize that it became Microsoft Flight Simulator.  In fact, some of the under-the-hood code in MS flight sim still goes directly back to the SubLogic product.

I remember flying in that little grid world.

And the worst part is that the frame rate in the little animation was about the best the Apple ][ and the IBM XT's could pull off.   It was absolutely state-of-the-art.

And regardless how many people 'Claim' to have flown it (not doubting you Eskie...) I can proudly hang my hat on the fact that I was there.  I bought it in the original box for my Apple ][ around 1981 or so.  And I remember when SubLogic was like HiTech and you could talk directly to them - on the phone, email was a way off yet..

They ended their involvement sometime after FS5.  They made some nice scenery designers and aircraft designers.. Probably around 1994 or so.. Then they finally slipped into sim history never to be heard from again.

Don't doubt your elders children... You have it oh, so good.

I think the first flight sim I ever flew was on the Commodore 64. It was strictly instruments only and it took about 35 minutes for it to load on the tape drive.

Later, I can remember flying Sublogic's Jet.

First flight sim I flew was on the TimexSinclair (z80 for you Brits). Cassete tape load under 16 kilobyte program. I consisted of dials and stripes that marked the center of the runway. This was about 1980.

Excellent!  I definitely remember those!

I haven't seen any of the names in your list in over a decade other than Blue Baron, whom I corresponded with a little while back.  After the demise of AW, BB isn't looking to get into on-line flying anytime soon, I think.

However, some old timers are back and flying here -- like you!  I've also seen some old timers who aren't here yet, but who have been poking around and who might come back for some scenarios.

Eskimo, I very much remember the ol' subLOGIC Flight Simulator, by Bruce Artwick for the Apple ][.  When I saw that, I thought it was one of the greatest things I had ever seen.  Folks these days have no idea what it was like going from having nothing at all to have something (almost anything) as a flight simulator.  I think back then we would have sold our souls or given internal organs for something like Aces High.

nah, thats a very different voss. The guy I'm talking about actually worked for Kesmai for awhile, and was a class act.
I think that guy you point to used to fly with TAS - I ran into him on cris.com way back

On a side note - I ran into Stiletto tonight and he says he is the original Stiletto. He was legend when I first started AW.

Bullethead's post does bring back some thoughts for me.  I didn't see the AW community as being full of griefers the way people use the term.  There were strong rivalries and grudges, but also very strong commeraderie and a very strong community.  I must admit, though, it was nice to be able to hunt people down repeatedly.  You could generally tell which few airfields were likely places for people to take off from; and if you flew a lot, you would know people's preferred aircraft and flying styles (preferred alt, preferred style of engagement and moves, etc.).  Thus, if someone got under your skin, or if they had been repeatedly kicking your butt and you wanted to go after them until you got some satisfaction, you had a decent chance of coming up, nosing around some, finding the likely person, and going for another fight.

I forgot how much I liked that aspect until Bullethead brought it up.  In Aces High, things are so big, and there are so many aircraft around of the same type, that it doesn't seem as easy to do.

Also, as the community was smaller, people knew all knew each other, and everyone knew everyone else's reputation (such as who was good in which plane, personality types, etc.).  That was fun.
