Check 6 calls
« on: November 12, 2005, 06:37:40 AM »
I have noticed when in a furball or a decent dogfight there is deffinitly a lack of check 6 calls. I have noticed even if someone is on my tail, and I have an ally on his tail he won't give me a check 6 call but only worry about the kill he might get.

See I have my check 6 call button right on the top of my joy stick so if I see someone in trouble I check there 6, tell them to brake left/right and try and help no matter what. Why do more people not do this cause I find doing this you can even get more kills.

I don't intend to sound rude, but;

1. Your six is your responsibility, unless you're flying with a wingman.

2. Consider any and all six calls as gifts.

3. If you want to get angry and complain in the game or on the bbs, see rules #1 and #2.

I used to get annoyed at the lack of check six calls in some instances.  Then I realized that I was not giving them when it probably appeared I should.  Several reasons can contribute to it:  I tend to tunnel vision (why my k/d is sooo bad) and really don't see the friendly in trouble; My joystick has too few buttons so it isn't mapped and I'm working flaps, rudder, etc. and don't have enough fingers to call the check 6; I'm too busy trying to survive in the furball to look out for others; from my perspective looks like the friendly is tracking the enema etc. etc.  I then realized that I am the only one responsible for my own 6, and the check 6 from someone else is a gift.  I try and give them when I can, but also try not to get annoyed when I don't get one.  I do think it is wrong to use a buddy as bait and refuse to give a check 6 to try and get a kill.  But how, if you feel you're the bait, do you now there wasn't another reason?

I do think youre responsible for your own six. And i never expect any six calls from anyone.

But every now and then, theres a fight where people actually work together, keep calling chk6, help each other set up kills, clear each others tails.... teamwork.
I love those fights. They are fun and like Jethro, i do wish there were more of those. But i learned not to expect that kind of teamwork. Sad truth.

I dont have six call or range vox mapped to JS either, and i sure as hell cant chk6 every single friendly thats attacked while in my icon range (my SA is just not good enough for that). But i do what i can. I think its a good idea to remind people every now and then that they are rarely fighting alone.

PS: To me Jethros post neither sounded like a complaint, nor like a whie. He was just stating an observation he made.

The only time you should be looking forward in a furball is when you pull the trigger.

I never use check 6 function.

I dont even know where it is on my key board.

I have local vox and use that........

For me the check 6 button is an anachronism embedded in the game from a time when vox was not available.

One of my all time favorite scenarios: Someone loses their SA, dives in for an easy pick, and winds up getting picked by someone else. The dead guy immediately yells, "Thanks for no 6 call, !", and then range lights up with 10 smartasses yelling "HEY, DEAD DUDE, CHECK SIX!"

I don't know why, but I love that.

The more planes there are, the longer it takes to toggle through all those names.

Sadly, I just figured this out in the last year, but whatever friendly is nearest the center of whatever direction you're looking gets the call if you just hit the apostrophe key, IIRC. You don't have to toggle through with the tab key (or whatever the default key binding is).

I still hear experienced pilots ranting about where's my six call!  I do give 6 calls but I dont expect them.  Your 6 is your 6, not someone else's!  That being said, there are times when peeps work together in a fight and everyone is happy.   My advice would be to check your SA before entering the furball and no where not only yopur first threat is but the second and third and if possible, map out in your head where your threats are going to be coming from.  When you see the red guys, notice their direction, speed, alt, and every aspect that could make them a thereat to you!  Good luck!

hub, youre right, the one in center gets the call if you hit ' once.
By hitting ' more then once, you can toggle between the friendlies, too. The one the 'box' stays on for longer than 2 sec gets the call...
