Air Warrior had a Korean War arena and a WWI arena.  The WWII arenas were vastly more popular.

The problem with Korean War jet combat was that it took forever to have a dogfight.  Ranges were often huge, and at such high speeds, at a human's g limit, it takes a long time to do 360 degrees compared to WWII dogfights.  Saddling up took a long time but lasted only briefly, and then you'd have your shot at about 1000 yards.  Almost no one flew in that arena.  Vietnam would be in many ways worse, with even larger ranges to target.  Also, in the jet theaters, you don't have much variety in aircraft.

The problem with WWI combat was mainly that everything was a turnfight with little tiny maneuving radii, needing your forward-up view, but you can't see squat in your forward-up view because of the wing in your way.  So, you follow what you think is the enemy, get a brief view of him (maybe for a shot) as your view between your gunsight and upper wing zooms past him.  Finding that he did a maneuver you couldn't see while he was blocked by your upper wing, you correct into another tight-radius move, and so on.  It was more popular than Korean War, but really, the upshot of it all is:

In my opinion, WWII is the golden age of aerial combat and is vastly superior in fun and excitement to any other era of air combat.  It has the best mix of speed, maneuvering, range, visibility, variety of aircraft, and whatever undefinable attributes that give air combat its feeling of excitement and gusto.

Excellent points all.

If we had a few of the Spanish Civil war/Desert war late BiPlanes in the game a WWI arena would be moot.

The Korean War planes in AW did provide for some interesting but almost always fruitless effort.

There was a dedicated group of WWI pilots in AW, but never more then 20-30 were up and that only on extremely busy days.  Usually there were between 4-12 and often no one at all.

In Viet Nam, I think Ground Warfare would be far more interesting than aerial excepting the use of Napalm on enemy positions in AH1s.

Call me old fassioned but to me modern air combat is just about electronics and missiles and very little about flying. Put that into the AH mix and you will only see planes take off fire missiles and run for home.

No appeal to me what so ever.

WW1 is not as appealing to me as its too much flying and too little action. But its still far more appealing then modern air combat.

Actually WW1 furballs are a LOT of fun, i remember the first online air combat game I played in 93 or so, RedBaronI on INN... it is the game that got me hooked.  The Fokker DR1 was the turnfighter from hell, the Spad was the boom n zoom fighter...

in middle school i was in the historical miniatures club (way nerdier than the chess club...that i was also in). we played, among other games, one called airodrome. it was a turn-based WWI dogfighting bord game. you had to first build and paint your own plane (i got in early so i was the red barron). but the my favorite paint scheme was already taken by the teacher that ran the club. that pilot was Werner Voss. this is why i love his plane.

Anybody remember a game called 'Ace of Aces', that was essentially two books full of drawings, with an index system to allow you to 'dogfight' by choosing your maneuver and flipping pages?  Circa 1980's?

(whoa...did I just, like , really date myself, or what? )

No thanks on the Jets.... AirWarrior had them, the jet arena was  empty most of the time.  But I would really like to see all the late prop planes added , even the ones built after WW II ended .
It would be fun to beable to use all the later, faster prop fighters in the MA .
