How is the Main Arena connection for you?
« Reply #150 on: March 03, 2006, 04:57:41 AM »
Been on three days.  First day Dallas1Level3.net packet loss.  Address constantly changing.  Second day was fine.....today going from a 30ms Ping at Level3net at chicago and next hop Level3net Dallas a 60ms increase in ping time (90ms) and again address constantly changing at that hop.

Not good.

I think freeze up's are becoming a problem for more of us, out of 5 log on's this morning I had 4 freeze ups that requried a restart of the system.

A little better went from 147ms to avg 127ms. Haven't played online since the change (just checked ping times). Will play this weekend to see if gameplay is changed (previously gameplay was good).

Playing from Trinidad (Caribbean) on local ISP TSTT.

Anybody else here from the Caribbean?

I'm seeing the same thing Hajo mentioned with the packet loss at Dallas1Level3.net.  Ping times a bit worse than they used to be, and I never used to see any packet loss.
Dunno how accurate this observation is, but I'm seeing some "jitters" when I get within 200 of an enemy (they will jump from 200 to 100 and back) and lot's of "Rubber Bullets".  I have no idea if that is due to the change - I have been drinking less so maybe that's the problem...

What are they related to??  I am having mini freezes now that I didn't have on the other server, so if server change is not the problem what might it be?

So your system isn't pausing/freezing while it waits for an update of information to come back from the server?????

I have noticed significant, at least to me, differences in AH when more people are online.

This may be due to the connection time of others versus my own connection.

I have come to believe it is useless for me to try and shoot anyone down in a big furball.  I have to fly on the edges looking for 1 or 2 to fight and if they go into a furball I best break off.

I SEEM to get rubber bullets when I jump into a furball anymore.  Didn't used to, but lately.

Latency?  Smoothing code?  Not sure what but it SEEMS like what I see and what is actually happening are different.  Often LOOKS like when I fire in a big furball my shots go right through the target or are somehow slowed down and fall short?   I THINK I track the same and fire the same away from a big furball and SEEMS like I hit way more often?????

Not trying to blame anything or anyone just trying to figure out what is happening.................... ......  looking for a reason I guess.

In general, a pause in the screen is related to the CPU being busy or the video card stalling.  The more players there are in your area, the more data your computer has to process.
If you select game settings which overload your video card, then you can experience stutters as well.

Went from 20 to 15 hops = good, ping went up from 50 to 60 = bad. Gameplay and in-game netstatus were the best I've ever seen. Overall, I'd have to say "better".

Skuzzy and HT, I have a suggestion and I have never seen an official position to it.

What do you think about implementing minimum connection standards? For the most part the game plays beautifully, but then there's 1 out of 50 or so who warps 1k or more at a time, for everyone chasing him. Really ruins the moment, ya know?

How 'bout < 500ms with minimal P/L? This should still allow anyone on the planet with a decent connection to play. Even that standard is quite generous but I guarentee there are folks flying around in the MA with worse connections than that. You might lose 1 percent of your customers, but the gameplay will increase 100% and that will attract more customers.

My 2 cents!
