Taylor, I wasn't saying it was bad. Sorry if I gave that impression. I was more responding to SASKid's comment about how he only spray paints his models.

Bodhi,

That Corsair is really fantastic.  What scale is it?

You do know they make spray paints especially for models, right? They are aerosol cans with model paint (enamel) inside. They lay an even coat of paint down but don't require the clean-up that airbrushes do.

They are, however, "blanket" coats, you can't do any special designs unless you carefully mask off the areas you need before you apply the paint.

I've always been of the impression that if you take the time and effort to put a model together, even if you think it looks bad, it's worth that time and effort to keep it. I'd never put firecrackers in my models, or shoot them with BB guns or any of the other stories I've heard some folks do.

My time is important (even as a kid it was, too! I had so many things to do, if I did any 1 thing it had to be worth it), so I wouldn't create something just to destroy it. Legos were another matter, but models? Never!

Main wings are just hooked on, not glued (I'm not going to cement them, I want to be able to transport it in the future).

Krusty,

very nice!  If you want to make it look less chromey and more of that burnished aluminum look, I found that you can take some toothpaste and water it down a bit and rub it lightly on the paint (carefully with your finger or a qtip) to take a little of the paint's gloss off.  rub the same direction for all pieces and try it on a hidden area first to get the desired effect.

My favorite part of doing models was weathering them, battle damage, and the dioramas.  I had some awesome pieces but gave them away to neighborhood kids when I moved.

Did you know that you can flat down gloss paint with talc? That's what they use at the factory to flatten paints.

For smoke streaks from guns, engines etc., you need to thin out flat black, maybe a little flat grey mixed in.. thin it to translucent... test it on a piece of scrap plastic first... use a 000 or 00 brush, if it's too dark, blot with a q-tip.

Be careful not to loosen the previous coat of paint by over-brushing too much.

Battle damage such as bullet holes can be done with a heated sewing needle, but don't overheat it as the plastic will mush up around the hole...  you can simulate the smoke damage from a hole by putting a drop of the abovementioned thinned paint on the hole and then blowing it in the direction of the windstream with your breath.

Man it's been a long time since I built models, can't believe I remember this stuff.  I don't think my wife would be very accommodating of two hobbies, or I might take it up again.

Here's a picture of my biggest model to date (had to sell it earlier this year) :( :cry  :cry

makeing or remakeing old cars and building military modes?

man u should just go with military models cause u can work on cars more then models cause u can work on the military model for a bit but u can work on cars as long as u want! models r easier cause u can spend more time with people because once u put some pieces on together then u need to put the main piece u worked with onto the main pieces or someting, u should let that piece dry first then work on it again!

but the car is nice and very SHINEY!!!! SHINEY! EWWWWWWWW, SHINEY!
