rpm.. I would not be surprised if you liked the BSG world.... lots of good socialists all working together.

Contrast that with Firefly.... individualists compared to BSG robots... In BSG it is often hard to tell who is the robot... certainly the elite in BSG don't have any more respect for the people they govern than they do for the robots...

Why get wrapped up in the politics of fiction? Who cares? Just enjoy the show... I used to watch the West Wing, despite disagreeing with the entirety of American foreign policy. It was a _good show_. Who cares about the politics if it's entertaining?

There is really next to nothing good on TV for sci-fi these days except BSG, its certainly not perfect, but at least they try. I cant stand "Stargate SG:1" and "Andromeda" is a kids show.

As for the politics of it, the shows intent is not a blueprint for our future, I could care less, I just want it to be entertaining.

I will say this though, of all the "future societies" I would NOT want to live in "Star Trek: TNG" tops my list hands down. I would set my phaser to kill and evaporate myself (im sure they probably dont have that setting anymore so maybe just jump off a bridge would do), that or defect to the Klingons.

You mean besides the whole Alliance thing in Firefly, right? Serenity itself is nothing more than a dictatorship. It's Mal's way or... Mal's way.

He might occasionally listen to a crew member's opinion though.

It's not a dictatorship. No one was coerced into joining the crew, or staying part of it. Infact some practically begged to stay part of the crew. When Book and Space Ho decided to leave the ship Mal didn't put a gun to their head and say they couldnt'.

Serenity is an venture in free enterprise. A capitalist invested his wealth in a ship, and provides gainful employment, shelter and board for people who might otherwise not have it...or be in a much worse situation without the option he gave them.

For him doing this service he gets use of their skills and/or other compensations. Both sides make out better than they would without each other. And for this you call him a dictator? Absolutely not. But there is label for people that make the same arguement you are making.

LOL, I've never given much thought to the political leanings of science fiction. I don't know what you mean about the BSG leaders. You must not understand the storyline.

sci fi is the best place to explore political ideas taken to extremes.

I agree with thrawn about Firefly. The allience is big government and the colonies are like states if....

If...We had states rights... the U.S. could be like that without a strong central government that will come and kill you if you exercise your state or human rights.

Imagine if you could have states with any rights that were constitutional... people could move to states that best suited their political leanings.

BSG is nothing but a strong central government... it was before the attack and earlier episodes hint that there was a large amount of political prisoners.

That does not mean I don't enjoy the show... I do. I just wouldn't want to live in their world as much as say the one in Firefly.
