Saddam Hussein to hang.

I could only hope it's at noon tomorrow but I'm not sure that I'm that lucky.

He won't hang. His death sentence is symbolic at best, the appeals court will overrule it. Just watch.

I doubt it.

It all depends of what happens in Iraq. If the current regime manages to stay in power Saddam will have his death sentence turned into a life sentence. After 5 to 10 years he will be quietly released or put in "house arrest".

I guess it all depends on how afraid the government is of pissing off his fan base.

I kind of always had a suspicion that we'd end up giving him a mansion in Miami Beach...

No way will Saddam ever survive a "house arrest". There are plenty that want him dead and unless he is protected by heavy security will see to it.

He's in Baghdad - Sunni territory. If he gets "house arrest" it will be in Tikrit, his home city and centre of his powerbase.

You know … where these people live:

No *****e government can allow him to live once he has been convicted and sentenced. No smart government of any kind can.

I think he very well may die.  ****es in control, and they hate him.  Not to carry out the sentance might  be seen as weakness.  Plus with him gone, there can be no hope or speculation that he will return to power.

Iraq does not have a Shi'ite government. Any government that kills Saddam won't be governing Baghdad for long.

Let's just see what happens.

Iraq has a Shi'ite majority government. That is the biggest complaint and fear of the Sunni's and the Kurds. They have to execute the sentence, to do otherwise would be seen as weak and cowardly. They cannot be seen as weak and cowardly and still survive.

I can think of a certain President that might deserve his own trial or two in the years after his Administration ends...  :t

The sentence is not final, it is automatically appealed. The government do not make legal rulings, the courts do. The government cannot survive without the Sunnis participating, the alternative is civil war. Both the courts and the government know this.
