We've had many gun threads that have touched on favorite this or that, but maybe not this variation: What is your favorite fun gun and why?
Not necessarily the biggest or baddest or cutest or teeniest, just the one gun you have the most fun with, every time, guaranteed -- the gun that brings a grin to your face, the one that never lets you down or disappoints you, the one that feels so right it's like a good friend.
My fun gun is the Ruger Single Six I just bought. Had its granddaddy forever; this is the grandson with both .22 and .22 WMR cylinders.
The .22 cylinder will fire any size or type .22 cartridge -- no fuss, no bother, interchangeably if you prefer.
Especially with the 4 5/8-inch barrel, it's exquisitely balanced. Feels as if it has always been in my hand. Ultra safe with the new Ruger mechanism that allows six rounds to be carried, and even no-damage dry firing -- unusual for any rimfire gun.
The single action Single Six is utterly predictable and reliable. Does exactly what you expect every time. The hammer has two positions: down ("all the way forward") or cocked. Nothing in between. No intricate safeties challenging the shooter.
"The loading gate can be opened only when the hammer and trigger are fully forward. Opening the gate immobilizes the trigger, hammer, and transfer bar" (unique trigger safety mechanism).
No fancy sights. Rear sight adjustable with a pen knife screwdriver.
No feeding problems; no ejection problems -- the manual long rod WILL eject anything.
No need for after market products like different handles, sights, mechanisms, or other embellishments. Nothing improves this original design.
Easy and convenient to carry in the field or tote to the range. Inexpensive to fire all day with any size .22 you want. Quite a bit more lethal with the .22 Magnum cylinder, although each magnum shot is four times as expensive as a .22 LR.
Challenging to hit something at any distance, but accurate enough to do some game or dissuade an aggressor. Shoot dime-size targets at home defense 7-yard distances, or try for silver dollar-size targets at 25 yards. If you can hit consisently with the 4 5/8" barrel, you can do well with most other guns too.
Feels just right in any situation: admiring it, firing it, loading it, ejecting shells, carrying it, cleaning it. Probably more like a pet than any other gun.
Doesn't need anything extra ever except a nice leather holster so it can rest in style between outings. Who, me, anthropomorphize a gun? Well, yeah, maybe this one. If I were into gun naming, I'd probably call this one Trusty.
