What's Your Fun Gun?
« on: December 16, 2006, 01:02:10 PM »
We've had many gun threads that have touched on favorite this or that, but maybe not this variation:  What is your favorite fun gun and why?

Not necessarily the biggest or baddest or cutest or teeniest, just the one gun you have the most fun with, every time, guaranteed -- the gun that brings a grin to your face, the one that never lets you down or disappoints you, the one that feels so right it's like a good friend.

My fun gun is the Ruger Single Six I just bought.  Had its granddaddy forever; this is the grandson with both .22 and .22 WMR cylinders.

The .22 cylinder will fire any size or type .22 cartridge -- no fuss, no bother, interchangeably if you prefer.

Especially with the 4 5/8-inch barrel, it's exquisitely balanced.  Feels as if it has always been in my hand.  Ultra safe with the new Ruger mechanism that allows six rounds to be carried, and even no-damage dry firing -- unusual for any rimfire gun.

The single action Single Six is utterly predictable and reliable.  Does exactly what you expect every time.  The hammer has two positions: down ("all the way forward") or cocked.  Nothing in between.  No intricate safeties challenging the shooter.

"The loading gate can be opened only when the hammer and trigger are fully forward.  Opening the gate immobilizes the trigger, hammer, and transfer bar" (unique trigger safety mechanism).

No fancy sights.  Rear sight adjustable with a pen knife screwdriver.

No feeding problems; no ejection problems -- the manual long rod WILL eject anything.

No need for after market products like different handles, sights, mechanisms, or other embellishments.  Nothing improves this original design.

Easy and convenient to carry in the field or tote to the range.  Inexpensive to fire all day with any size .22 you want.  Quite a bit more lethal with the .22 Magnum cylinder, although each magnum shot is four times as expensive as a .22 LR.

Challenging to hit something at any distance, but accurate enough to do some game or dissuade an aggressor.  Shoot dime-size targets at home defense 7-yard distances, or try for silver dollar-size targets at 25 yards.  If you can hit consisently with the 4 5/8" barrel, you can do well with most other guns too.

Feels just right in any situation: admiring it, firing it, loading it, ejecting shells, carrying it, cleaning it.  Probably more like a pet than any other gun.

Doesn't need anything extra ever except a nice leather holster so it can rest in style between outings.  Who, me, anthropomorphize a gun?  Well, yeah, maybe this one.  If I were into gun naming, I'd probably call this one Trusty.

I bought a SW 41 and put a old c-more on it just for fun. Man i have a really good time shooting it at the steal range. What i really like is i can buy a brick of .22 for $8 and i dont need to spend 3 hours reloading to shoot the next day. Its crazy that it will shoot better then my sti at 30 yards. Fun gun and its a very pretty and well crafted gun just looking at it.

Think i am going to purchase a custom 10/22 our build one. I am really getting back into the .22's just for the fun of shooting. I have six long guns in .22 but i think that a short 10/22 with a red dot could be fun for bowling pins and the steal range.

Definately build an ultimate 10/22 don't buy one.  It's such an easy design to work with.  1 bolt holds the stock to the action.  In fact I'd say the 10/22 is easily my favorite/most reliable/most used gun I have.  I can't give a gun more accolades than to say It would be my main gun WHEN the Zombies arrive.

Can I pick three????

In this order....

1)  Springfield M1903-A3------tack driving .30-06
2)  Winchester 120 12ga-----my first and still favorite shotgun, action is smooth as silk
3)  M1 Carbine----------Fun and accurate for "higher power" plinking!!

I would also have to say my Ruger 10/22. I have more parts and add ons laying around for that thing I had to get a new oversized hard case for everything. I have 4 different stocks (standard walnut, Droganov Sniper, Bullpup coversion, and a really nice thumbhole laminate with oversized glass bedded barrel channel), almost 2 dozen mags, a bi-pod, tactical lazer, reflex sight, 4X scope, rail system, flash hider, mussle break, spare heavy barrel, extended bolt handle, extended mag release lever, and the list goes on.

Depending on what I want to do with it I can configure it anyway I want in just a matter of minutes. I can make it look like a standard 10/22 out of the box or turn it into a full blown target race rifle on a whim.

If i were to buy one i would buy a custom one with all the goodies. Was looking around and i think i could get a nice custom job for around $400. Its always nice to build one but its cheaper just to buy a gun someone shot 500 times and is looking to fund a new gun project. Good thing with the .22s are that you cant shoot out the barrel and their pertty bullet proof.

My family bought a ranch and we are having the fence guys make us a shooting range after they complete the high fence. Took a trip out their to work and flaged off the area for 5 foot burms on the side and a 8 foot back stop. I think its going to be nice but its going to be interesting what targets i am going to make. Think i am going to go all steal and i have a good friend that makes custom gates and iron work for a living. He has a complete shop and all i would need to buy is the steal. Always dreamed of a really nice covered range and its going to happen this spring.

I probaby have most fun with my shotgun shooting clay pigeons, but after that there is nothing more fun than plinking with the .22 rifle.

All guns are fun, I used to compete in bowling pin matches with a .45 and .22 pistols, with a bunch of guy I work with.  That was a blast too.  Did it some with a .44 magnum, that was fun just to watch the pins fly when hit.

Interesting many prefer the M1 Carbine and Ruger 10/22 -- similar design, something very nice about the way they feel and handle.
