dropping eggs
« on: December 29, 2006, 04:53:07 PM »
I just joined a squad. These guys are some of the best and I'm fortunate to get a chance in this squad. Anyway, they like to take a few planes out and drop eggs on hangers and such. I can sometimes leave spots on the concrete, but basically I can't hit squat. If I can't see under my plane how do I know when to drop? With all the angles and speed and trajectory it seems impossible to me. I have tried many time and have never hit a hanger.

Is there a way I can get infinite bombs load out in the offline game so I don't have to land and re up every time after dropping? Also, can I make it so I'm not getting clobbered by ack or anything else while I practice dropping? Thank you, Clutz

Not sure about the arena settings you need to adjust ammo amount or hanger hardness....

BUT....

You might still be hitting the hanger, just not "killing" it.  Usually most planes don't carry enough bombs to drop a hanger all by itself.  Just do a nice power off dive at about 45-50 deg dive angle from about 10k or so....just be sure you slow down to almost a stall before you do...then just aim slightly forward of your target....drop your bombs at 4-5k up....boom time just about every time.

Clutz, before I can help are you in a fighter or a bomber.  I don't really want to go through both.

If you go to the training arena, the Divebomb Sight option is enabled and you will see a green X where your bomb will go when you drop it.  It's automatic.  When you start diving, the x will start to appear from the bottom of the screen.  That will give you an idea of where the bomb hits at varying dive angles and speed.

You can also do this offline and I believe the default offline set-up is to also have the Divebomb Site enabled.  If it isn't, you can go bring up the clipboard and go into Options/Arena Setup/Enviroment/Arena Settings.  Select FlightModeFlags from that list, click the Change button and then check Divebomb Sight in the window.

lol, I hear ya man, hehehe

I am going to try fighter bomb drops first. I'll try B17 or something like that later on after I kind of get the hang of the fighter bomb drops.

I still need to figure out if I can get an infinite bomb load out so I don't have keep landing to get more bombs. This would save tons of time.

Thanks for the replys so far, I got some info now to get me started. :aok

Clutz,  Here's what I do.  I usually fly an F6F with full loadout for attack missions and this may vary slightly by plane but it should be pretty close for most.

I climb to between 8-10K.  The reason being that I want to hit maximum dive speed at the point I release my ordinance, be it bombs or rockets, to provide them the straightest flight path possible.  You'll have to determine what this alt is for the plane you fly.

Hold altitude until the target field is visible to you without magnification.  You want to be at the edge of, but not directly over the target field when you begin your dive and moving at full speed in level flight.  You may have to roll back and forth a little to see the feild below you and gain proper position.

Once in position begin your dive onto your target.  Zoom your view in to clearly see the target object you're going after and adjust your dive path pointing your pipper at the far edge of the target (hanger, ord, etc.).  Once your comfortable with your dive path zoom your view back out.  At this point the target object may dissapear if you're not close enought yet.  Don't worry it will come back into view shortly.

As the target object comes back into view re-align one last time making sure your plane is in a straight, stable flight path.  As you approach about 2K drop your ord and pull back on the stick (in an F6F at this point the airframe is stressing, creaking and beginning to shudder... compression is a concern in some other planes).  Be careful here as some planes (the F6F for example) have a tendancy to want to rip the wings off if you pull back too hard.

Now that you're climbing again hit auto climb, WEP on and select your next set of ord if you have it.

As you slow to 200 mph indicated loop over, WEP still on and dive to your next target following the same proceedure.

The less alt you have (thus the less dive speed), the more you will have to "lead" your target (i.e. aim past it).

In a fully loaded F6F with 2 1000 lb bombs and 6 rockets taking out two hangers at a V base is easy and taking out all 3 is possible.

I usually go 2 rounds leading with my bombs to lighten my plane and see if I can bring the target down without using my rockets.  If not then I use the second pass to finish it off.  If you want to do it in one pass lead with your rockets then swith to bombs and let em fly on your first pass  You can let the rockets go above 2K.

This takes a little practice.  Come back and let me know how it works for you.

The best way I've found to practice is to fly offline in the same arena that's used for the training arena,  take off from the 10K high fields that are on the tall plateus in the bombing training area, and bomb the city at the base of the plateau.

It's "yours", so things don't go boom - but the ack ignores you, you can see where you are cratering, and you can do a lot of runs in a short amount of time.

And the distracting green cross thing is off by default.  (Thank goodness).

I think what your looking for is the arena settings to change that offline.  You need to go to your clipboard and click on options/arena setup/environment/arena settings.  and then you will need to scroll down to flight mode flags, click "change" and you will see the option to enable you dive bomb sight as well as the target lead and other things.  If you scroll to "plane gun ammo mutiplyer"  I think you will be able to change the value to unlimited ammo and bombs but don't hold me to it as I haven't tried that setting but I see the guys that set up the 8 player arenas do it all the time.

Good Luck!

exactly what I was fixing to post,  to practice GV Shooting techniques / level bombing / dive bombing techniques / Task group ship gunnery techniques, as well as wanting to test aircraft for performance data. I suggest you load the Training Arena as the offline map  for use.

it really does have its benefits of use...... even the 20K alt bases have both runway launching and Air start Launching abilities.......
