reformat?  

I'm not very computer smart.  I wouldn't know how to do this.  Or maybe I do, but there's just a different name for it.



EDIT:  Okay, so it's a brand new day.  I only have, 2 and a half hours before I go to the renaissance fair with my friends.  

to fix my computer, I have had multiple suggestions.  

But I'm really tired today, and my problem solving switch in my brain hasn't been flicked on yet.

step one would be to: ________  fill in the blank.  Ah, and yes... I have run a spy ware scan, and a virus scan not too long ago.  I'll run AVG once I leave, And then run Ad aware in a few minutes.  

After that I will try to install my video driver.  Hmm, then what else...

Reformat is the process of wiping ALL information from your hard drive, including applications, data and those nasty bugs/trojans you've picked up.

ANY and ALL files/data you wish to keep must be copied and stored. You can store the data on cd's, or ZIP disks, or a flash memory card, which is probably the easiest.

Do you still have your original Windows Operating System CD? Is it XP?
If so, once you have all your files backed up, insert the XP cd into the cd tray and reboot your computer. As I recall, you will be given options and instructions as to how install a CLEAN version of Windows. Clean means your computer will be restored to whatever condition it was in when it came out of the factory.

You will be asked at some point whether to format your hard drive for FAT32 or NTFS, choose the NTFS.

If the computer you're tweaking belongs to mom or dad, ASK 1st BEFORE DOING ANY OF THIS!!!!

The reinstallation will take up to an hour, depending on your computer specs. Once complete you can add back your applications (install them as you originally did)

One thing you want to back up is the SETTINGS folder which is in your Aces High folder. I recommend installing a fresh, full version of AH from the HTC download website. Once installed, replace the new SETTINGS file with your old one. Just in case, rename the old settings file "oldsettings" You can leave it in your AH directory folder.

Oogly,
as Max as mentioned, if you install the Windows XP CD and reboot the computer, it will ask you  or show you options to boot up using the CD/CD ROM.  Once you boot up with the CD it will walk you through loading setup files, then it will ask you whether to install / repair your OS.

You will be able to format in 2 ways - quick Format or a full deep/slow format.

I recommend the latter one, takes longer but is better in this situation.

edit: it will ask you if you want to delete the existing OS ( Operating System . YES you do want to delete it )

Once you are done with the format, you need to create a new partition ( it will probably be called C:\ )

also format using the NTFS file structure.......

then you will be asked or told to install winXP at this time..

this is not word for word, but is a generalization of how it will go.

the Win XP CD will actually walk you through the setup / format / New Install of Win XP.......

would it allow me to back up my files?  Because I did a system restore once, and all my files got deleted... EVERYTHING.  :rolleyes:   I don't want to make that same mistake twice.

Also, I don't know how to back up my files.

Do you have a CDRW ( CD Burner ) on your computer? if so just use something like NERO  to burn/copy your files you want to save to a CDR disc........

the WIN XP CD does not afford you the benefit of backing up any files.....

you must do the backing up/ copying of files you want to save before you do the format/New OS Install......

Yup, you got it.

Just to make sure we're on the same page, all of your program software needs to be  reinstalled from scrath. Back up files can be transferred back. Do you know how to use Windows Explorer? That makes file transfer a snap.

I had to step out for a second, Oogly.

yes as Max said backup files first

then insert WinXP CD, reboot, boot from CD.

then it will give you options to install over existing ( rewrite C:\windows folder )

ask if you would like to install new

but you will need to FIRST, delete/RE FORMAT the hardrvie

then after you do that you can create a new C:\ Partition in the NTSF file structure  and install a New fresh copy of WinXP

then load your drivers for the Motherboard/soundcard/video card etc.....

( if you built your PC, you should have a CD for the Motherboard with drivers on the CD, once you get to this point let windowsupdate take over and download all the necessary updates......

and be sure to download/install the correct Video Driver for your video card......

edit: I guess I should have asked if you have a prebuilt pc ( HP, Compaq, Dell etc...) or if you had a self built PC ( Clone ).if it is prebuilt, then you prob only have what they call a restore disc.........

Oogly, once you've done the full re-install (if thats what you doing), before you put your backed up files on there, virus scan them first fella.........(I know I've said this before, but its important). Make sure you have your anti virus up and running, and any firewall you have as well, as it will help you not get infected again (at least as fast)...I'm working a night shift again, so will be here for a few hours, gimme a holler if there is anything you think I can help with...(sure you'll get all the help you need from the people here !!)

Okay, First off, I don't really know what needs backing up.  I have hundreds of files on this computer, Half of that being files that I don't know what they do.  

Also, is there a scan all folders button I can click on?  :D   Would make my mission a little bit easier.  

Basically max, What your saying is... I can back-up all my aces high folders and settings I own, but the actual game itself can't be backed up?  



Also, this back-up process is giving me a head-ache.

Let's start from scratch.  I insert a blank CD.  I open my files screen (or whatever you call it)  I scan the files I want to back-up.  But here's what confuses me.  Do I drag the files onto some icon?  Do I right click and open a menu that gives me the option to 'back-up file'?  

Also, max.  For my AH settings folder, I would re-name the folder 'old settings' So that when I reinstall Aces high, I can open that folder?  How would I sellect it so that Aces High will recognize THAT folder instead.  

I could probably figure this out on my own.  But that's not likely.  Even if I could, I wouldn't want to run the risk of turning my computer into a vegetable.  No matter how healthy for me it is.

Ok...starting with the backing up of files...easiest way is to choose the files you want backing up, which you can do individually........find the file, right click and "send to" your cd/dvd drive (whichever you have you can write to). This will store them until you bring up a box (ieexplorer kinda deal). You can then write them to disc. Or, you can make a blank folder, copy the files across into the folder...then write that to disc in the same way.

To reuse your old aces high files (after virus scanning).....if you have renamed them old settings, you can copy them across to your puter, check the permission settings are right, then copy them into the settings folder of aces high (you should get a prompt asking if you want to overwrite the files there - as they may well have the same names etc). Click on yes, and jobs a good un

Assuming your running xp, when you send files to write to a disk drive, it will pop up a prompt on the bottom right of your puter....if you click on that, it will open up a box that looks like explorer....
