noob scolding
« on: December 07, 2007, 04:04:40 AM »
A little while ago I witnessed a new player getting chewed out on the country channel for asking some questions about base capture.  One guy was so offended that he took it upon himself to pontificate about reading the manual online, and kept going and going... with a final quip to the likes of "vets like me shouldn't have to suffer these noobs."

Strangely enough, hardly anyone objected to this behavior.

Tell me this isn't normal.  Years back I played WB 1.x and 2.x, and new players were usually welcomed because of the new life they brought to the game (we also liked to shoot them down).:lol

I had this yesterday,    a guy was flaming country channel losing it big time called hydrolik.    Calling everyone names etc etc  I told him to hush and I get the  "suck my **** noob!"  line charming!

Then raider was having all sorts of fun on 200 calling out every person that killed him a noob.

All this garbage coming from no skill nooblets themselves!

I say young uns.   Learn some respect for others and then maybe you will get some respect back.

Until we get perma squelch we will have to carry on suffering.

Yep, Raider but even moreso Hydrolik makes more noise than he should.

The thing with loud mouthes is that anyone who knows better just ignores them or squelches them, in effect giving the impression to any outsider that they're tolerant or supportive of that crap.

This is not only on 200, everything happening on this channel is up to you as you have the choice to tune on it or not! in my opinion asking something on 200 is not the proper channel to do so.

But when a noob is asking something on country channel, let's say more relevant than "how do I start my engine", I guess that the answering "go to the help page you noobie!!" is not the way and the example to show to new players.

This game doesn't belong to the vets, they have no more rights than others in this game. If they have a problem with the young generation, maybe they should get a life and quit.

I think the general atmosphere is helpful for new people. I answer up to questions on the help and other channels as much as time allows. I don't think I've ever seen anyone berate a new person for asking reasonable questions. The Alt + F4 answer is tedious, though.

However, I have seen some new people berate players for not answering their barrage of questions framed in a demanding way. Some even become irate when, after asking 5 or 6 elementary questions about the game, I offer up some resources for them to look at. They could have found almost all the answers in less time than it took for them to type out the questions, but demand answers because they "don't have time" to spend 10 minutes reading.

I don't think asking someone to read the help or faq after a barrage of demands for help is "pontificating."

When a new guys asks questions (yep, even stupid ones) I try to answer.......the Alt - F4 answer is way old but makes me chuckle (even as I tell whoever said it their naughty lol) - not seen anyone who doesn't try to help - but can see how it gets annoying. I try not to rag on the new guys (not been here long myself) and will always try to help/support etc - until they start flaming.

Depending on how they react to the flaming - I'll support and encourage them - or flat out ignore them until things have calmed down.

Everyone was a noob at some time - we should (to an extent) try and help them - this game has a steep enough learning curve to get to average, let alone good.

No, the "vets" don't own the game. However, they also don't have a responsibility to babysit new players that can't be bothered with reading the basic instructions for the game. This doesn't excuse rude behavior. At the same time, the new players that refuse to help themselves, often, don't seem to understand that they are (for lack of a better word) intruding upon the playing time of other paying customers.

Frankly, it would be nice is 1st timers could be more readily directed to the TA and help files.

Most of the seasoned vets won't mind answering a few questions. When it becomes apparent that the guy asking the questions can't be bothered to spend 15 minutes reading over basic help info, he'll probably get flamed.

What I find bemusing is the fact that often, the first ones to flame are the same noobs that were asking the questions 2-3 months ago. :huh

Sad to say, but I've seen more and more of this from some of the newer players that call themselves "vets" of this game.

I can understand the frustration of explaining some of the basic questions that are repeatedly asked (and the occassional Alt + F4 answers) but I see no reason why the newer player has to be degraded.

If you can't offer some helpful suggestions, (not directing this at anyone in particular), move along.  It's very easy to tell somebody to read the help files or go to Netaces.org

I believe that its the resonsibility of the true "vets" to speak up and put some of these flaming squeekers in their place.  Not to bash them, but a simple "Knock it off....xxx.  You were new too once!"

Just my .02 cents.
