I understand and appreciate those who like to take up one perticular ride. :aok

I view the hangar as my toolbox.  There's a tool for every kind of job in there and I pick the tool for the job.

I fly pretty much all of them, too many fun planes to limit myself.  Also, mastering (or attempting to master in my case lol) multiple planes allows you to learn lots of different skills.

I fly the:
f6f
f4u (all models)
p47 (d models)
109's (all but g6)
190a5
ta152 (new addition)
spit IX (sometimes)
Mossy (gotta love it)
p38's (oh yeah)
p40's
yak9t
n1k (my original dweeb ride)
a20 (for bomber dogfights)
D3a (hehe)

The list goes on....

Planes that I know well?:
C.205 and 202
all F4Us
all 190s and 109s
hurris
Niki
P47s
P51s
IL2
all spits
Temp
and Yak9U
Thats my catagory of planes.

I have a family connection to two planes - the mossie and the F6F.

My father was Canadian and flew the mossie with the 105 Pathfinder Squadron. He immigrated to the US after the war. I never got a chance to talk to him in too much detail about the Mossie. He died when I was 14 years old as my interest in aviation was just starting and he was reluctant to talk too much about it, as many people of his generation were.

After he died, we were taken in for a while by my uncle on my mother's side - Uncle Steve. He was a recently retired US Navy admiral who lived in Washington DC. He was a very down-to-earth, modest and generous man who had an interesting career and traveled in some lofty circles. He fostered my interest in aviation while constantly calling me "plebe." He was a 1933 US Naval Academy graduate. Remarkably, Congress had a squabble over the number of officers authorized for the navy, and the Annapolis class of 1933 was not commissioned - they were sent away to be civilians. It goes to show you that Congress has always been worthless.

Congress came to their senses a year later and my uncle received his commission, spending the next 5 years as a line officer on destroyer and cruiser duty until 1940 when he went to flight training. In 1941 he was on the USS Wasp flying the F4F Wildcat and spent the first year of the US war in the Atlantic. His pug nose came from an intimate encounter with the gunsight of a Wildcat that got away from him on one carrier landing.

He transitioned to the F6F and in 1943 was commander of VF-35 (The Grim Reapers) and CEAG-35 (The escort carrier equivalent of CAG - F6F-3s and TBMs) on CVE-28, the Chinango. He flew the F6F-3 during the battle of Tarawa and other operations at the end of 1943 through 1944. He was promoted to Cdr and was assigned in 1944 to form a new air group, CAG-94. They were deployed to the USS Lexington (CV-16) in 1945.

Here's a couple photos of him from the CAG 94 cruise book:

||

Our default skin for the F4U-4 is VBF-94 from the time my uncle was CAG, but he flew the F6F-5. I'd be pretty happy if we could get a new F6F-5 model with a AG-94 skin and 'double nuts' (00) number for his plane. ;)

That's why I fly the F6F quite a bit. I rarely look at my stats, but I was surprised to see I used the F6F so much. I had 95 kills and 8 deaths in it last tour. I'm hopeless in the mossie, though. ;)

I would have to say the NIK2-J. I have been towered in most  of the aircraft here but have found the nik to be the most exciting to die in. There are so many variations, the best is getting your drop tank hit.

As my main rides I've flown a variety
By "Main rides" I mean planes I've flown almost exclusively for an extended period of time (months)

Typhoon.
FM2
NIKKI
109f
190 A5
190 A8
190D9

Havent been able to fly in 2 months now due to my machine croaking on me
In the proccess of doing a new build which I hope will be done within the next month.
Im determined not to Charge any of it. So its going to take some time.

When I get back I'll be happy to be fling just about anything

Well ... his main ride is the P-38L, which he dies in more than he kills in ... and I'll bet ya can't guess what plane kills him the most.

Slapshot, I'll take Spitfire Mk XVI for $500 please.

And a sub-question, if I may.  Why would you want to have a "main ride"?  AH has so many different planes, why do so many people pick just one, or a small handful, to fly 90% of the time?

- oldman

I get asked this question a lot a lot.  For me, it's that no other plane holds my fascination like the P-38 does.  Ever since I was a little kid and I first saw one at an airshow, it was quite literally instant love.  Even today after all these years no other plane has come close to matching the fascination I have for the Lighting and flying any other plane feels strange, like I'm cheating on my Lightning.  I don't think I'm limiting myself at all as the P-38 is a handful to fly even for us that have over a decade dedicated to flying it, nor do I feel that I'm missing out on the planeset.  I can fly any other fighter just as well as I can the P-38 but as I mentioned, they don't give me the chubby that my Forked Tail Devil Mistress gives me.  I'm also lucky to be a part of a squadron that was in real life a P-38 squadron in the ETO and allows me to indulge the Walter Mitty in me.

I hope that at least partially answers your question.

I like American carrier based planes.

When I was a young kid I watched an aircraft carrier cruising to Alameda in the SF bay, and I was just simply amazed by it. My interest never faded, and when I stumbled on to this game I automatically was drawn to the CV rides.
I'm terrible in all the planes, but I enjoy failing in the F6f-5 the most.
I like the F4u-1d and Fm2 as well.

If I reincarnated as a warbird, it'd be the 152.  Probably with an MK103 in place of the 108, no 20mm's and the larger wooden tail, though.
No other plane (maybe the 410) comes close to fitting me as well.

With your avatar, I would have thought this have been more fitting for you.

Because to you it's more rewarding to fly and enjoyable then the other 99% of planes available. Discipline, more of a challenge and as AKAK pointed out there is the historical squad aspect.

Not forgetting the big gun novelty of vaporizing fighters with a single round is an added sweetener to the experience.  :t

1-HOG will straight up, PUNK a spit16 :rock it's just another ride Daveyj! stop being intimidated by it and start paying attention on how to kill it  ;)

I've no problems with any Spit but the 16. And I'm sorry but I'm not the only person with the viewpoint that the Spixteen is a dweeb ride.
