While satisfying, I'm upset that if you do the final main story line quest you can't continue to free roam.  I'd say thats my only complaint.

save the game in a new file just before the end then you can go back as much as you want. I'm not there yet by a long shot but thats what i intend on doing. thnks for the heads up

Yeah...I didn't know and so I only have the autosave from going in the last room and not being able to leave.  Oh well, I'll do a slightly more evil character with some different skills focus.

The Mini-Nuke is ammo for the Fat Man.

It launches the Mini-Nukes, not very far, by a catapult or something.

FYI : Do NOT use it in small rooms or hallways, or give it to your companions and get in a fight in a small room or hallway.

Anyone else get a kick outta "liberty prime"?

The laser it has had me rolling but when I realized he was pulling nukes from his backback and chucking them was too much.  All the while: "Directive: destroy all communist chinease scum in Alaska"

Oh man, too much.

Nah, I searched the factory, and i rid it of all ghouls.
I also went into the robco factory and activated all the robots but i didn have the ability to reprogram them so i had to sneak my way out of a factory full of robots roaches and molerats.

It's one of the most awesome events in the game, if not the most awesome. When I played it the first time it was night and I had the GNC or whatever radio channel tuned. It was simply awesome to watch the show with the radio broadcasting a fitting music to the theme.

Engine, I've played Fallout 1, 2, Tactics and even Wasteland years ago on the Commodore 64.

Fallout 3 isn't 'dumbed down', it is a great game with alot of content that you can play as a 1st person shooter, or as turn based game with VATS.
Blaaaargh, I've been resisting, but I'll pick it up sometime on the recommendations in this thread. I'm just worried I'll be disappointed. During development I remember being dismayed by each Bethesda announcement and dev interview, because (to me) it was clear they were doing a post-Apoc Oblivion and just throwing the Fallout name on it because they spent $5m on the IP. I'm still skeptical on the non-permanent karma changes, the magical items that boost abilities (+4 Sweater Vest of Small Guns skill), the nuclear-powered cars that somehow haven't been salvaged after the apocalypse and blow up when shot at (dev interview paraphrase: "Who cares if it makes sense, if it blows up it must be fun!", the redesign of ghouls from geriatric radiation-warped oldtimers to utterly generic zombies, the changing of Supermutants from big deformed freaks into bland Schwarzenneger Orcs, etc etc etc.

God, I'm such a depressed, bitter, jaded gamer.

I'll post thoughts after I've played a bit.

i played the previous fallout games as well.. all these "hardcore fans" make me laugh. they really hate life, engine as an example. lighten up and slaughter some innocents in fallout3 or at least sell them to slavers.

Engine, I think if you give it a try you will be happy.  I was worried myself, being a huge fan of Fallout 1 and 2.  Tactics, not so much  ugh!

They stayed very true to the universe and I'm having trouble understanding peoples complaints that you listed.

The ghouls are still ghouls.  Maybe slightly more zombie looking but I'd attribute that to simply better graphical representation.  They still communicate and act like the ghouls from the previous games.  They did add in "feral" ghouls, but in all honesty they fit and make good sense in the story.

The super mutants are just like they used to be.  Created from human experiments to create super-soldiers.  They run around terrorizing the humans.  You may find a couple friendly ones, I found one wandering around the wasteland besides Fawkes that was a friendly supermutant.

The gear is well done and the engine is different, but such a good transition from all turn based to fps that I was immediately entranced by the game.

I highly recommend it.  I've finished the main story with one character and now plan on turning it up to very hard and seeing how long I can last as a melee character.  The hand to hand was easy once I picked up a powerfist.

yea, the humour is great too. it was funny first time i heard super mutants converse at germantown police hq. i was like damn, these guys have got it down. i wish u could play the game as a supermootant and just attack towns.

I just got it on friday. AWSOME game! Im only at level 5 but Ive taken to huntin Deathclaws, its all about setting up the kill zones. Where was that supposed weapon though? I went north and found a radioactive dump site... No weapon though. oh and why does the sniper rifle suck so much?!

near Vault 106, you should see a group of Wanderers warming up near a small fire.  If they are still alive, bring up your VAT and put a bullet in each one's head.  Loot them and on one of them you should find the Deathclaw schematic.  Then go hunt a Deathclaw and loot it for it's claw and go to a work bench and build the Deathclaw melee weapon.  You need to put points into Small Guns to make the sniper rifle more steady.

"liberty prime"

That machine is absolutely bad ass, one of the only Ai's in the game that was built for war, from day one, wouldnt allow anyone to power down its laser systems, the only thing it ever wanted was enough power to take the fight to the commies.

Did any of you notice how not only did it lob nukes, but it throws them "with great speed" like he was a 50's football star.

Absolutely awesome.
