What is(was) your favorite wargame?
« on: June 23, 2009, 09:32:29 AM »
Ok... those of us that grew up in a time when video games consisted of Atari and Intellivision, played wargames with little cardboard counters, with rulebooks that made the dictionary seem like a comic book, and maps that were highly detailed and covered with grids of "hexes".

If you remember such a time... what were your favorite wargames?

Mine are (in no particular order)

Axis and Allies - (Milton Bradley) - I still have the original version, and the new revised one... now teaching my son to play.
Rise and Fall of the Third Reich (Avalon Hill) - I still have 2 complete copies of this one
World War II - (SPI) - Still have a copy of this too
Submarine! - (Avalon Hill) - Was my first wargame
Kingmaker - (Avalon Hill) - Great game of backstabbing and shifting alliances!
Star Fleet Battles - (ADB) - Still have the rulebooks for this somewhere.
Richthofen's War - (Avalon Hill) - GREAT WW1 Air combat boardgame!

Risk - board game

Hehe... I remember playing Risk with my cousins on holidays when we all got together.  Ended up with all of us being mad at each other, and I seem to remember a fistfight on one occasion.

Oh man!  I remember playing that until like 4am in my barracks room on a C64!!!  But... thats technically a video game, I was referring to games that dont have a power cord :)

Squad Leader was fun, as well as Wooden Ships & Iron men.
And of course I have to mention Air Force and the Fighting Wings series:

(Despite "Luftwaffe" being on that picture, it sucks ;))

Squad Leader  :aok
Ambush (a solitaire game)
1776
Hell's Highway
Flight Leader
Risk
Battletech
Advanced Civilization (Avalon Hill's)

Still got those in my bookshelf :)

From more recent board games I've just recently found "Carcassonne" to be quite interesting, even though it is not really a war game.

This was my favorite wargame. The new style of fighting in AH2, leads me to believe that alot of people liked this game also. :x
