The UK has 3 air arms- the RAF, Army Air Corp and the Fleet Air Arm, which i'm joining.  Initial Officer Training is 35 weeks at BRNC Dartmouth including 3 weeks of flying grading.  Then i head off to Barkston Heath at RAF Cranwell for 26 weeks of Elementary Flight Training. Upon completion only then am i streamlined for either fast jet or rotary, so it's a long time from being able to say what i'll be flying. :)

At least you know why i was defending the Royal Navy in that thread diehard, i'm biased as hell. :D  It would be nice to fly a harrier before they are withdrawn from service.

cheers for the kind words guys.

35 weeks?!  Wow.......that's insane...

I say we all chip in and modify his Harrier so that when he lands it reads across the HUD, "Thrila landed 5 victories in a Harrier of The Royal Navy"

Good luck sir, Congratulations and stay safe   :salute

Good luck mate.
... missions were to be met by the commitment of alerted swarms of fighters, composed of Me 109's and Fw 190's, that were strategically based to protect industrial installations. The inferior capabilities of these fighters against the Mosquitoes made this a hopeless and uneconomical effort. 1.JD KTB

What ever happened to Gatso?  He was at Cranwell about 4-5 years back for his flight training and I haven't heard from him since.

Congrats and hope you get fast jets. I would have thought there were better odds in the RAF for that though. The RAF stream only their creamies into Harriers so it's a tough gig to get to fly them. A friend is an ex RAF Harrier pilot. He is one of the best pilots I ever met. If you make it onto Harriers you will be one of the best.

I tried for the RN and the RAF. In the end never even got an interview because I wasn't born in Britain despite the fact that many Irish served as pilots over the years, including my friend mentioned above. Ironically it's the fault of the Americans who now insist on only the highest possible security clearance for personnel using US hardware or software. You can't get that if you're anything but British born. Oh well :cry What's really ironic is that the rule doesn't apply in the USA. As long as you are a citizen you can apply for aircrew in the US military. :huh

Hope it goes well for you!

yeah and some of the rupert's I meet and worked with should have done 88 weeks in training..its quite funny they finish officer training and come to their first field unit with their head stuck up there bellybutton only to be put in place by a stripey :D

RAF are just civvies in uniform :D  :noid
