The thing about follows is it's not that the bait is moving so fast that the fish cant catch up to it, it's just the fish deciding whether it wants to eat or not.  You would have to be seriously burning it for it to be so fast the fish cant overtake it.  Most of the time you could get away without a leader especially with the magnum sized bucktails and crankbaits guys chuck these days.  With smaller lures IMO it becomes more important, musky will T-bone lures and if he catches the head of the bait, or the bait is small enough that it gets totally engulfed either from the side or behind you could be in trouble.  You have teeth, treble hooks, and in some cases you're banging off structure or across a rocky bottom that can all damage your line.  When you're talking about losing lures that on average start around 20 bucks a piece, or possibly losing the fish of a lifetime why not take a little extra insurance as long as the fish don't mind?  Look at how much junk this guy is dragging, and these fish are still coming in hot.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYnLc0ETA2Q  Clear water and negative fish might be a no go for leaders, but most of the time I believe it's a non issue.

Braid is much closer to the actual breaking point listed because it isn't as stretchy.
The Fireline takes away this variable somewhat.

Fireline is very expensive, though ($17 for a regular spool of CRYSTAL[lo-vis]).

If it were me, I'd use a very good quality mono. Spiderwire is all I use (when I don't use Fireline).

My friends go fishing as much as I do, and they swear to the Sufix brand and Cajun Line brands.

Berkley (aside from the Fireline), Stren and Trilene are all cheaper for a reason.
I use Sufix saltwater fishing, stuff is great!!

Pretty much covers my thoughts on leader/no leader, mind you I tend to make my lures so cost isnt really a factor but loosing that fish of a lifetime sure can be.

But to put things into prospective,I tend to fish with very light lines, well I should say leaders as most my fishing is done with a flyrod. For pike or muskie I just cut down a 9ft leader to about 3 or 4 ft and add a tippet, usually I use 20lb mono for a tippet.I find if a fish cuts the line it's usually the smaller ones, they must have sharper teeth or there's less space between them, whatever it is they seem to be the most trouble.

You think a fish that will follow right up to boat side and then go around and around in circles with the rod tip in the water 2 feet in front of it and someone standing on top of it moving around is concerned about braid or a leader? lol.  Musky have the worst target fixation out of any fish I've ever seen.  Maybe it's because they're so mean they don't care, or maybe they're just that stupid...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhSqtbu_24M (bit of adult language in there so ninnys don't click).

Yes. Although it is true that muskie and other fish of the pike family have very bad "target fixation," it is not so bad to the point where they will eat anything anytime, any day. If a fish is hungry enough, it'll take bait on 365lb catfish braid, but a more natural presentation and that includes without a visible line, is invaluable. I never said you couldn't catch muskie with a steel leader, I just say it is kinda pointless. It throws off the action of the lure and pretty much takes away any possibility of catching something besides a muskie (a Largemouth or Walleye are always fun to hook up on accident). Here in KY, Muskie get very sluggish in the summer, so a natural presentation is, as always, key.
Huge muskie lures are pointless and expensive. You can catch as many, if not more muskie from regular bass lures.
Landing is overrated.

Usually for Kingfish, its Bloodworms and clams, looks like thats a clam showing in the photo, so it would have taken the bloodworm.  Kingfish rigs are 2 hooks, 2 small floats we usually bait the hooks with a different bait on each hook (gives them a choice ) and works well, we did pretty good on kingfish this year.

Side note......if your fishing with bloodworms, watch out they bite and it hurts like heck. Like a bee sting x 10
