So of course now that i have the new boat, im shopping for some new gear  :D  (silly, silly wife for letting me get this boat....Pandoras box has now been opened  :lol)

Im looking into some trolling rod combos, anyone know anything about the Okuma trolling rod combos? (I have an Okuma Titus and love it) Im thinking of getting a medium heavy rod, with a reel that can comfortable handle 14lb test line, or braided line, spiderwire etc.

From what ive read, in reviews and such, they say they are good quality, at half the price (which scares me a bit)

Im looking for something that will work well in a downrigger, or with planer boards, The fish would be walleye and or Hybrid Stripers........any suggestions?

Price around $100.00 a piece would be nice (and keep me from having to sleep on the couch)

http://www.pennreels.com/products  They used to make a trolling reel with a line counter so you knew exactly how many feet of line you had out. I used to have sheets of data on how deep different lures went, with how much line out, at what speed, and it was very useful used with your electronics. Barring that with an open faced reel you can measure how much line goes out with every cycle of the line guide. Its not exact but good enough.

You might be in 20' of water and want to be ticking your lure off the tops of weeds growing 8' off the bottom. Wipers will hit like tuna but walleye can be lazy and will even follow lures so you'll want to zig-zag your boat on a troll instead of always trolling in a straight line. Actually you should be doing this with any kind of trolling, most of all if your marking fish on your box.

The striper and wiper fishing is a blast as well as the crappie, gill, bass, cat...ect fishing. And they know how to treat ya in the south, its a real pleasure to be down there.

Hehe, if price per pound is a consideration I suggest Costco.  Way cheaper!  :)

Great Pics Bug!!!

Ghi,
Catching your own, estimated cost (including the boat and Bait, gear, fuel, time out of work etc) $150.00 per pound

Purchasing at the store    $15.00/lb

While catching your own is expensive, in about 30yrs, you will make up the costs, and it will actually cost less   :aok   :D

Renew the License GHI   :)

I use Daiwa Accudepth Plus Line Counter Reels.  I have the 47lc model but the 27lc should be good for Walleye.  Have no complaints and they have worked well for me for going on 3 years now.  I just recently purchased a combo from Gander Mountain for a new wire diver setup.  Got the 47lc reel and a 9'6" Wilderness rod for $64.99 after a $15 rebate.  Was a pretty good deal, I thought. The reel alone usually cost that much.  I believe their 8' version has the 27lc.  :salute

 Mbailey,

those Okuma rods started to show up in the mid 90's in my parts and alot of guys grab them because they were alot cheaper than an equal  lumis[sp] or sage rods.

I almost bought a blank to build my floatrod but went with a Stcroix instead. They use high moduless graphite in the Okumas and while this makes them sensitive it also makes them explode when stressed too much.  I had a fenwick explode in my face once,I'm still pulling graphite out 20 years later... :rofl

Personally I'd go with a Diawa, shimano or pen and go with a good midrange rod, dont buy into the high moduless bullpucky.

It does make a difference in flyrods but for trolling and general fishing A good composit rod will last much longer and doesnt need the care that a pure graphite rod does.

Now I only have 3 or 4 fishing rods but I do own 10 or 12 flyrods!  Boats are for pulling skiers, real men fish with fur and feathers...... :devil

Mbailey check jersey shore craigslist and you can find rods and reels for about 30 bucks. I see them all the time on lbi or just over the bridge in manahawkin. Most of theopennface reels i see are Penn reels.
If you want to build your own rod check out my cousins web site mudhole.com, he doesn't sell reels only rod building and stuff to tie flies and make lures.

check Ebay too. With the economy a lot of people, unfortunatly, have to sell their rigs and assorted equipment as well. Thats what I did when I sold mine, course I always thought a new boat would be coming along.

Kept my lures tho. All thousands of them. And will never sell them. :D
