Had a day on Lake Perris with Pete Marino - who, by the way, is the most patient nice guy.
Wife and I arrived early at the lake, being up in the desert, we took a relaxed drive down - smack talking each other about who was going to catch the most, biggest etc, you know the score. Met up with Pete, who already had his boat in the water.
Got out on the lake, Pete had me throwing a top water bait (first time I've done this) - getting the action right was initially a bit of a challenge, but once I got it right, the tick tick sound had me mesmerized lol - Pete had a couple of big boils round his, but the fish didn't take it. Wife was throwing a plastic, nothing taking that either. We moved up to the dam, where we were all throwing worms - Laura (wife) hooked up with a bass, then another, then Pete hooked up with a couple. The words were uttered "we're not moving until you've caught 5" - my reply? "we may be here sometime then lol...."
Hooked up with more rocks by over casting - once I got that sorted, finangled a couple out - so the score at that time was Pete 2, Laura 2, the english numpty 2.
Moved over to the canyon - the fish on the finder showed a huge amount - they would follow the bait down (we're all fishing the drop shot here) - but not one of the buggers would take it. We kept at it, no joy, but I learnt a lot about reading a fish finder, and moving a boat around where the fish are.
Then we moved to the tires - Pete hooked up with something big, but it stuck its head under a tire and refused to show itself - Laura then hooked up with the biggest fish of the day 3lb and a couple of ounces - wtg birthday girl (one of the reasons I booked the trip).
We moved again, back up to the dam, where Pete hooked up with a bass - which made the score Pete 3, Laura 3, english numpty 2.
Right at the end of the trip, I managed to hook up with a feisty little bass - rounding out the score lol.........
Things I learnt today, how to fish a top water bait, drop shot rigging and fishing (not done this before either), reading a fish finder, and boat handling.
Overall, had a great day, fish were finicky, all the bites were very gentle. Pete did exactly what he said he was going to do, put us on fish - think the amount of bait in the water had them preoccupied stuffing their faces with shad. Bit of a tough day bite wise, but, that's fishing, If it was easy, all the time, it wouldn't be so much fun when they do go mad for baits.
