BLACK THURSDAY
This [MoM] mission will be a historical recreation of the
8th Air Force's second raid on Schweinfurt, Germany
flown on Thursday, October 14, 1943; a date that would
forever become known as "Black Thursday".

This October 14th, 2010 will mark the 67th Anniversary of
what has been called "the most savage air battle ever fought."
The [MoM] is scheduled for two days earlier, Tuesday, October 12,
to remember and honor the brave airmen who fought and died
during that epic battle.

◊ Date: Tuesday, October 12, 2010
◊ Time: 7:30 PM ET (Assembly) → 8:00 PM ET (Missions Posted) → 8:30 PM ET (Launch)
◊ Arena: Titanic Tuesday
◊ Aircraft: B-17G (as F), P-47M (as D)
◊ Vehicles: N/A
◊ Mission Text: Numbered Channel TBA
◊ Mission VOX: Local (restricted) → VOX Channel in Mission Editor
◊ Command VOX: Ventrilo
◊ Target: TBD

B-17 FLYING FORTRESS
The core of this battle is the B-17.  The escorts could only
accompany the bombers a short distance into Germany
before having to turn back to refuel.  This left the B-17's
alone to fend for themselves.  To survive long enough to
return to the umbrella of fighter escort, we need as many
B-17's together in the air as possible so we'll need most pilots
flying in 'Forts.

We need a MAXIMUM EFFORT in B-17's!

If you wish to participate and find the bomber slots filled,
hold on as I will keep increasing them.  If you come late and didn't
get a ride, please join someone as a dedicated gunner.
We will be sure to need them!

If the bomber slots are not filled though, please join one of the
posted B-17 missions....even if you can't bomb well.
We can always use another set of guns to help defend
the rest of us...and act as a diversion!  ;)

GERMAN PLANESET OPPOSITION
We can't force you to restrict yourselves to a German
planeset but we hope that you will choose not to dishonor
the memories of those who fought in this battle by flying
non-German aircraft.  Surely, thats' not asking too much
this time around..is it?

Please note also that this battle will be filmed and edited into a fitting
tribute to those gallant airmen we seek to honor.  Non-German
planes would make that somewhat difficult.   :(

ACTIVATION TELEGRAM
Those registered on the [MoM] alert roster [current count: 240]
will be receiving an activation telegram in a few days containing
additional details and information.

For any that can't bomb well, I will plan to do some discussion on calibration and general bombing technique during the flight.. Now chances are that 50-60% won't even make it to the the target so we need numbers! But if you don't know squat about bombing, you can count on some great pointers if your in my flight.. Newbs, are more than welcome.. See you there, can't wait..  :rock    :salute

This looks like a lot of fun! We are new to AH, transferred from FA and just getting the hang of things. We love to fly the B-17 and will try to help out.

Just a question so please keep smart arsr answers to yourselves: Why would you want to comm. one of the biggest disaters for the USAAC. aproc 64 bombers destroyed or shot down with the loss of over 600 men?

Seriously hoping I can make it, would love to fly a B-17 slot, and if it looks like I can only make part of it I'll definitely gun for someone.

For the same reasons people play a simulation that depicts a war in which over 60 MILLION people were killed.
For the same reasons people play on the "loosing" side in a historical recreation.
For the same reasons people play FSO's, SEC's, and SE's.

Because the game "Virtual Couch Potato", even with the Beer expansion, isn't as exciting.

I wholeheartedly believe that no one will be able to give you an answer to your question that you will accept. The act of you asking proves that. If you cannot come up with your own reason for stepping into a B-17, heading into nearly cirtain doom, into the gunsights of planes eagerly awaiting your arrival, and risking your "virtual life" to maybe gain a tiny glimpse of what our forefathers were asked to do in order to safeguard the freedoms you now enjoy...
Well, I hear "Hello Kitty Island Adventure" always has copies to sell.

I'm willing to bet that most if not all of the people who are
learning about this event had no idea of the significance
of Thursday, October14th.  I can't think of worse insult than
to forget these men and what they did on that day.  Yes, I want
to commemorate what these men did.  I do not want the world
to forget. They deserve not to be consigned to the dustbins
of history, don't you think? But that's only part of the motivation
behind this.

For those of us who earnestly wish to learn about historic battles
the chance to go deeper than reading a textbook or watching a
documentary has always been attractive.  This event presents
amateur historians with a chance to explore a deeper level of
understanding of this historic battle.

Still, the question you asked could easily be directed to the legions
of living history reenactors who recreate historic battles every year.

Events such as D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge, Gettysburg (and hundreds
of other ACW battles), War of Independence (the Battle of Germantown
is a local event) are recreated to remember those who fought
in them and as a tangible means of exploring the experience they
lived.

By portraying them in such a fashion, even though there is no actual
danger, reenactors can begin to get just the smallest sense of
what they saw, heard and felt.  That results in a greater level of
intimacy with, and understanding of, the experience that reading a
textbook can never approach.

Participants in such mock battles often come away with a profound
respect, admiration and appreciation for the sacrifices made by these
men. Only by immersing oneself as much as possible in the combat
experience, can a person hope to learn about the event on a level that
transcends the intellect and reaches the experiential dimension,
albeit only in a shallow way.

Furthermore, by getting inside their shoes and experiencing, even if only
to the smallest degree, what they experienced, is to better understand
the conflict and, more importantly, understand the enormous sacrifice
that they made on our behalf.

While reenacting land-based battles is now a well-respected and established
hobby among amateur and professional historians alike, exploring aerial
battles in such a way presents significant obstacles.

Unfortunately, reenacting aerial battles is problematic as there really
is no way that something like that can be carried out.  Sure, there's
the "Tora, Tora, Tora" recreations that you see at air shows but for
the average person, the ability to actually participate in an historic
aerial battle doesn't exist.  Fortunately, with the advent of technology,
those barriers are being taken down and scores of amateur air war
historians now have a chance to explore those battles in new ways.

Using this game and your PC, we now have the unique privilege of being
able to reenact famous air battles in pixels, allowing us a chance
to delve more deeply into the experience so we can better understand
it and can appreciate the great courage and sacrifice demonstrated
by those who fought in it.

In doing this we honor these men, their courage, dedication, skill
and their memories.  That is what this event and all similar historic
battle recreations are all about.  Paying respects.  Most of these
guys will never ask you for anything.  They're too humble for that.
Truly the greatest generation.  All they desire is that their
sacrifice not be forgotten; their only wish is to be remembered.

And that's just what we'll be doing on October 12th: Commemorating Courage.

We invite you to join us.  Perhaps, you will come away with a new-found
respect and admiration for these brave aviators and aircrew, something
that can only be enhanced by this experience.

I don't believe that the B-17's will suffer as greatly as
some have projected.  I actually pity the enemy planes
that dare enter the torrent of lead that awaits them!

Still, if you are planning to fly a B-17 during this
[MoM] I've created a handy reference guide that I encourage
you to download, study and have available.

There are quite a few commands that most pilots are
not aware of with respect to bombers and multi-engine
aircraft in the game.  Some of these will prove
quite useful for this mission.  :salute

Oh yeah, marked that date.  :aok  I will, of course, be in a B-17.  :salute

However, I would bet money (suckers bet :lol) that there will be folks that will up non-German planes and possibly tack on a lame duck excuse as to why.  Have you tried getting a-hold of the AvA staff?  Maybe they will set the AvA arena up so that we wouldn't have to worry bout non-German planes being used to intercept.  Highly doubt it, but it IS worth a shot to ask.  :aok  The down side is, probably won't draw as many people in as we could in the MA....

EITHER WAY, it shall prove to be interesting indeed!  Last MoM I lost 1 B-17 (got rammed. Wasn't his fault, he had no wings or tail :devil).  I wonder if I will be as lucky this go...

The Spartan Warriors started the last MOM as attackers in 262's.  After losing our planes, most of us re-upped in P47M's since we have been learning them as a squad for the last couple weeks.  I completely forgot about the Axis plane request.

This month, B-17's again.  Wooo Hoooo   :x
