Speaking as someone who loves to fly the P-39D, it is outclassed by nearly anything it is likely to encounter in the Late War arenas.

I don't know how you fly that thing.... the rear-side views is totally obstructed 6inch think framing.

-GREAT unobstructed gunsight.
-good cocpit views
-can outturn EW spits.(but not outclimb)
-and of course, that 37mm cannon, makes the k4's 30mm look like a peashooter  :P

the Q model is best choice for anyone wanting to fly cobras in LW.

the D model does great in EW and good in MW.

IMHO the cockpit views towards the rear are decent, but not great, the heavy framing around the rear of the cockpit limits your vision, this was alleviated some what a couple updates ago by allowing more forward head travel, but maintaining SA is more challenging than a lot of other planes. You may be able to get some angles vs the SpitV early in the fight because the P-39D is actually pretty good at shedding massive amounts of E but once the E is gone I would be surprised if the Spit didn't just power around and get behind you.  I also think the 30mm tater chucker on the K4 is a far more desirable weapon because it has a much higher ROF,  the difference in damage between a 30 and 37mm round hit is irrelevant against most other fighters and under the current damage system 1 round of either on a heavy bomber isn't likely to cause catastrophic damage in either case the better ROF of the LW cannon far outweighs the larger caliber of the U.S. gun.

nice Soul....what about the weird stall in the 39 that will get ya if you dont know that plane.

The operational history of the 39 was bedeviled a bit by rumors that it would tumble, which hardly could have inspired it's pilots.  Bell test pilots tried to re-create the event but weren't able to.

Charles King who flew with the 39th FS in the pacific had the following to say
Quote
The P-39's handling characteristics have also come in for some criticism too. However, I am convinced that the fighter did not "tumble", as has been widely reported.  All tests to record a tumble were unsuccessful.  It was easy to stall the aeroplane on it's back, with a resultant flat inverted spin.  In that situation, retarding the throttle would allow the aeroplane to drop into an easily recoverable normal spin.  Loss of altitude in a flat spin was minimal, but to the disoriented pilot with a control stick that seemed useless, this was not apparent.  The aeroplane oscillated slowly and horizontally as the nose sipped below the horizon and then rose about it.  To some pilots this was interpreted as a tumble.

One thing that HTC seemed to nail was the 39 seemed to be a very easy plane to get into an accelerated stall, during maneuvers you have to be really careful or she'll drop a wing on you in a heartbeat once the speed starts to bleed off.

Edwards Park who wrote one of my favorite memoirs (Dan introduced us to it and it's been a hit to read in the 80th), he was interviewed for the book "Fire in the Sky".
Quote
You didn't ever move the controls much through your turns, so you thought about your acrobatics.  But it could do some very weird things.  If you actually moved the controls you had a very good chance of doing a high speed stall and snap roll.  It was very delicate.  Poorly trained pilots could get in trouble with a P-39...

F4F

And Spitfires are EASY MODE planes...just look at how the Brits bashed the Germans and we all know Brit pilots sucked monkeys in WW2.....flame suit on.
It's true I've seen it in a book somewhere. :D

How about IL2 in f3 mode for your pick. Dives, turns, no running like 190's.

i havent had much problem with cocpit view, the only times i do is trying to look out the side car door windows. i absolutly love the p39's gunsight tho. i think its the best gunsight ingame and would put it in all my planes if i could, its just so clear un un obstructed. plus the cocpit design i love aswell.

i have outturned a few spit1's (and a hurr iic once) in EW, but me saying a p39 can outturn a spit comes from a documentary on the p39 i saw. where they stated the british analyzed that the p39 could easily outturn a spitfire, but couldnt outclimb it or fight good in a vertical. therefore the british went with the spitfire instead of the p39. plus both the D and Q models are pretty good at withstanding deep dives and still handle pretty well at high speeds. and lets not forget the p39 is a very rugged and reliable aircraft. she can take hits pretty well. (taters includeD) i have no proof of it, but a year ago i was in a p39Q in MW, got into a DF with a hurr IID, took a 40mm round right to the wing. nocked my guns out in that wing and gave me a fuel leak, but the wing stayed on and i ended up wining the fight.

im not saying at all that the p39 is an uber plane, it can be outperformed by alot of LW fighters, im just saying it doesnt at all desire the bad rep it has. it can be deadly in a furball, and most people underestimate it, which is a fatal mistake.

its deadliest in EW and MW. and can still be a strong contender in LW under the right conditions.  :airplane:

Ya know this is one of the top three things I love about this game.  Having people who actually know what they're talking about post that info.  It's fascinating to me.

 :)

The P-39, particularly in US service in the 5th AF has been a little bit of an obsession with me (well as much of an obsession as my meager funds will allow) for a while now.

If you want a good memoir I heavily recommend picking up "Nanette: Her Pilot's Love Story" by Edwards Park.  Park flew with the 41st Fighter Squadron, rather than paint the picture of the dashing, heroic fighter pilot  instead the members of "Gopher Squadron" manage to scrape by and survive day to day.

It can't be taken a strict factual account, but is a great, great read, and can be found online pretty cheap.
