"Kelly's Heros"
« on: February 12, 2011, 01:42:23 AM »
Just watched this again for the first time in years. Came out in 1970. Donald Sutherland, Clint, Telly Savalis, Don Rickles, etc.  Anywho, they had some nice shots of a couple Tiger tanks, and four M-4/75s, a few US aircraft flying in formation & then strafing their truck, with US markings, putting them afoot. Not sure what aircraft? Looked a little like Jugs. Fun movie. Anyone notice any interesting vehicles?  :salute

The "Tigers" are mock ups built over Yugoslav T34/85s.  The film was shot in Yugoslavia and the Shermans are up gunned  Yugo M4s with 76mm guns in the early turret.  The planes are a Yak two seat trainer of some sort I believe.

Wow, good info. You sound authoritative, so I won't argue. They did a good job on the tigers from the side. They are a very close resemblance.

They look the same as the Tiger Is from SPR. Must be the same vehicles I would think (look close at the bogies). They are a decent stand in for the real thing.

I believe the Tigers in SPR were mocked up on a British tank but it's possible it was also done on T34/85s.  The road wheels are the giveaway in Kelly's Hero's.  If you've ever built a model of a T-34 you'd spot it right away.

I grew up loving that movie.  Telly Savalas was great.  Don Rickles was great.  Lotsa funny lines.

I watch it now, especially the cowboy style showdown at the end, and it seems like something Quentin Tarentino would've liked.

In fact, QT used the part of the soundtrack from Kelly's Heroes in Inglourious Bastards.

You're right Dan, T-34 85s.  The front looks a little snub compared to the real deal...but very close.
Murdr and I saw a Tiger/34 at the Reading airshow a few years back.

Pinko 85's were NOT in the movie (made in 1970)

Just an FYI.

What are you referring to Logan?  The Kelly's Hero's Tigers were built on Yugoslav T34/85s.

Check the road wheels
