You need to change your brand of LSD.

...or stop drinking Drano

The Kinks influenced a ton of bands as well messy.   I could post a few things and make a solid case supporting his statement.

I'm not arguing that they didn't.

However, I doubt that anyone can prove that anyone had more influence on modern music (in every aspect of the business from songwriting to recording studio innovations) than the Beatles have.

They are not even my favorite band.

It's a toss-up between Zeppelin and Floyd, FTW  :rock

Led Zeppelin has influenced way more then the friggin beatles.....I really can not stand the beatles they are an insult to good music.

the beatles were a horrible band, lame bellybutton music for the pop culture. they were "trained" by the studio so parents would like them also :aok  (something most people don't know and wont believe)

Zeppelin-floyd-not even close bro....Zeppelin is... was...will always be the greatest rock and roll band ever. :aok

three most over rated bands of all time

the beatles
ac/dc
aerosmith

some of the worst bands that people think are great

Motorhead I would classify more as a one-hit-wonder that was lucky to of had more than just one hit in their career.  I like the beatles though, but don't think they're the best and I know they were trained and groomed by their handlers, but I think that in itself contributes heavily to their legacy and that as people continue today to dig behind the curtain and more into who the individuals were behind the scenes it reveals a jackpot of wealth they weren't privy to before.

music is music.  you either like a song, or a band, or genre of music, or you dont.  That pretty much sums up this thread.  Arguing about this or that, when it comes to art, is like pissing into the wind.

I should have been more specific.

When I think of the Beatles as being an influential band, I speak more of their later years (post discovery of drugs), as opposed to, their "pop" years.

In many ways they blazed a path for a lot of other bands to follow.  I also consider their "techie" cadre as part of that (mostly George Martin)

In a lot of ways, they made it easier for the acts that followed them to do what they did.  I call it a case of "right place, right time".  It could have been any number of bands, but it happened to be them.

I personally, can't deny the fact that some of their songwriting was groundbreaking (for the time, of course)

Again, they are not my favorite band, but to deny their influence on pop-culture and rock n roll in general, would be as silly as saying that they are the greatest band in the world.  Something which the Stones (in my opinion) are certainly not.

I would also agree that AC/DC is a bit overrated, but I have to give them some respect.  As a drummer, I would kill to have a rhythm guitarist with the timing of Malcolm Young.  The man is a freaking machine.

Aerosmith, I can take them or leave them.  I like their early stuff.

I'm not a member of the KISS army.  There is something to be said about their theatricality, but not necessarily their musical prowess.  Something I would pay to see live, but not buy the albums.

Motorhead never did it for me.

The Dead on the other hand, are probably the most mis-understood band.  I would not claim to be a Deadhead, but I have a deep respect for their collective musical abilities and their penchant for playing what is essentially, American folk music, for the most part.

To put an even finer pinpoint on it.  Most bands, including the Beatles and everything afterwards were influenced by and owe some homage to early American blues musicians.

You've got to dig deeper sometimes, though.

Not liking any particular music or band or song, does not necessarily mean that it cannot be appreciated.

I was never a big Beatles fan until we tried doing a tribute band last year. We played out a few times, but people wanted more variety than just Beatles. Was alot of fun learning the songs. Of course the harmonies were the toughest, but most fun. Nowhere man and Eight days a week among them.

yes but there is "good music" and "great music" and straight up bad music.

most of today's music would fall into the last category, most of the 50's 60's 70's would fall into the first two categories.

but there is only one top dog....best of the best.....and Led Zeppelin is their name :aok

ya im a "bit" opinionated  :old:

The case for the Beatles being influential: when Decca turned them down it was because guitar bands were on the way out.

You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike.

kind of amazing when ever anyone gets inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame they thank

Chuck Berry
Elvis Presley
The Beatles
The Kinks

I think I will go with what the real professionals and stars of rock & roll consider - not some want to be rock stars who may have played at the local county fair which is what the majority of the musicians on here are....

The Beatles where the first to use

A bridge in their songs
dual track taping
2 singers singing lead vocals together

and many more innovations....

my 2 cents

If it wasn't for the blues none of these bands would exist, especially zepplin.

Sorry. I spoke too soon...and amen on the dead. I don't like most of the gratefull dead's stuff, but Jerry was an awesome banjo picker. Old and In the Way is just awesome. Oh and ACDC is as bad as music can get.

i think Fleetwood mac (the early years)  were far more out there pushing boundaries than the Beatles.   better guttering too. To me the greatest  guitar players are

1) BB king
2) muddy waters
3) David Gilmore
4) Eric "slow hand" Clapton
