CPU Heatsink/Fan

I have never used the original fan.  I always got my own.  I have this one right now, it fits all 775, sandy bridges and i3/i5/i7.  it's expensive and you need to get a separate fan but it's worth the money.  I originally got it for my e8400 and just transferred to the sandy bridge.

im looking 403.96 for my mobo, CPU, the heat sink and fan. around mid 600's for a desk (thats probably low, estimate of material as of a year ago)... over a grand before ill be happy (for now, gonna need to be getting me an SLI card not AMD before im truely happy) with my machine  . wouldnt mind a modular PSU in there, but i have an 850 so im set for now.

mine runs at low 40's air cooled.  2500k  oc to 4.5.  some coolers are better than others, but some look cooler than others.

Brands my friend, brands.   Prolimatech, Noctua and Scythe are probably the better of the "Air Cooling" HS's.    Zalman's are a waste of money.

I checked out the stock cooler on my 2600K before I got the real one. Just had to fire it up yaknow. The stock cooler is ridiculous. Don't even bother to unpack it. That bad. Idle temps of 47 at idle in an open test bench with a fan running on it. Yanked that off first chance I got. I went with a Zalman 9900Max cooler and Arctic Silver 5 paste. It cost about $79-89 new but I got a refurbished one on EBay cheap. The cooler runs great, it's pretty quiet and keeps my idle temps at around 31 and full P95 load temps at around 60-62 which is OK for my CPU. Yes Arctic Silver dries up over time but that's by design. The curing process takes about 200 hours of use after which you'd see a gain in cooling performance of maybe a couple of additional degress over a new application.

If you're looking for a cooler that won't break the bank check out the Cooler Master Hyper 212. Great little cooler that will run ya about $35. It'll fit all sockets currently available.

im a little partial to liquids around my computer. i didnt spend all my money back in march and april to risk a liquid frying it if a leak gets sprung. also, how much more would a liquid cooling system be over a heat sink/fan combo?

That's exactly why I don't have indoor plumbing.

you mean the Prolimatech Megahalems Rev.B CPU Cooler?  I have it installed on my 2500k 1155 mobo.  no problems here.  115#/136# mobos use the same coolers. 775 use diddferent but some coolers have adjustable holes to fit 775/115#/136#.

hey masonz this is what I have.  and by the way you dont have to buy everything at the same time.  if you have and are willing to reuse some old parts, and replace as it fits within your budget. I sure as heck didnt spend all that money at the same time.

actual cost for me is probably around 1000, since I sold my old gateway computer when i first upgraded to an e8400 based system.  then I sold that cpu/mobo/ram to upgrade to the new 2500k based system.  I also sold my old vc which lowered the price for my current vc to 200.  most of the stuff i got was bought on sale with  little or no shipping.

current system will play with everything maxed out shadows at 2400 can do 4800 but i see no point since I dont see the difference.  fps will go down to 55 every now and then, but that's mostly because I also have fraps recording  Big Grin.

Well nothing in a tube lasts forever but AS5 isn't like say caulk. Keep the cap on it of course. I've had a tube for a couple of years in a cool place and just used the last of it on this current build. I think it says in the application guide that you can keep it in the fridge and it'll keep longer.

Also get the smallest tube you can find. I got the teeny one at a Radio Shack for around $11. Since you're only using a tiny dot at a time that should last you quite a while.
